AP English Language and Composition First Semester extra points opportunity You may complete one of the following assignments for extra credit points. I will not accept anything past the due date. No exceptions! 1. View one of these iconic American films Cool Hand Luke (1967), Lilies of the Field (1963), On the Water Front (1954), All the President’s Men (1976), Rebel Without A Cause (1955), Citizen Kane (1941), or The Great Escape (1963). Type a film analysis paper. The paper should be 2-3 pages in length. Your essay should include a brief summary of the film (no more than 2 paragraphs), a general discussion of the director’s cinematic style (the look/atmosphere of the film), critical analysis of 2 or more key scenes, and your personal reaction to the film. Do not look to outside help or copy from anyone! If you choose to complete this work, it must be completed and turned in at the beginning of your period on January 4th. Up to 35 points
2. Pick up an AP essay prompt from me. Read and annotate the prompt and the passage given. Then write the essay. Be sure to have an integrated thesis, well written topic sentences, direct quotes embedded into your sentences, lots of analysis, and a global/noble conclusion. Do not look to outside help or copy from anyone! If you choose to complete this work, it must be completed and turned in at the beginning of your period on January 4th. Up to 40 points 3. Complete and submit a piece to the SRHS literary magazine (theme: Tomorrow). A submission can be a piece of prose, poetry or an artistic creation. The shorter the piece, the fewer the points. All submissions must be relevant to the theme. If your work is art, you must write a solid paragraph of explanation. Your submission (in addition to giving me a copy) will also need to be emailed or submitted to the Literary Magazine. If you choose to embark on this journey, your quest must be completed by January 4h. Up to 25 points
4. Choose one more of “The Harvest Gypsies” articles (2-7, we read 1), written by John Steinbeck. You can find pdfs online. Print it, annotate it, and then in 2-3 pages write a response to the article. Address what new information you learned, what information is seen in The Grapes of Wrath, and then relate any information to some aspect of current day issues, situations. If you choose to embark on this journey, your quest must be completed by December 16th. Up to 35 points
5. Create a collection of photos (6-8) that relate to The Grapes of Wrath. For each address the four steps for basic analysis of visual text. Either print or email me your work. If you choose to embark on this journey, your quest must be completed by December 16th. Up to 30 points
6. Attend a SRHS drama production. Type a play critique. The paper should be 2-3 pages in length. Your essay should include a very brief summary of the play, no more than one paragraph. Then discuss what you liked, enjoyed, what worked well, whose performance was great, where did talent shine. You can give some negative, but remember, these are your peers, not professionals! If you are a part of the play or crew, compare performances. If you choose to embark on this journey, your quest must be completed by one week after play performance. Up to 25 points
