Textbook information: Your login information from Biology II Honors will still work. Access the textbook by going to www.masteringbiology.com or stop by to pick up and sign out a physical textbook. If you are having trouble with your login or need another code to re-register, contact me and I will help you. Please name your Google Doc with your last name and the name “AP Bio Summer Assignment.” Clearly label sections and the number the questions. Assessments once the school year starts. 1. On the first day of class you will take a diagnostic test. This will give you a sense of where you fall in terms of biology material. This will not count towards your grade, but will be used for discussion purposes. 2. Over the summer you should be preparing and reviewing for a quiz on the material from Biology II Honors. You should use your study guides and notes from that course. A quiz on the Molecules Units (Chapters 2, 3, 4, 5) and the Cells Unit (Chapters 6, 7, and 12) will occur within the first weeks of school. 3. After discussing the ecology topics, we will have a test on that material (first test of the year). Please put all assignments in a Google Doc titled APBioSummer-Your last name. You can put all the assignments in one document or you can separate them. If you separate them label which part it is.

AP Biology
Acquadro Written Assignment
Part I: Worth 25 points
Due August 31st
As an AP Biology student, immersing yourself in the science that is your life is essential and important. Your first assignment is to read the book Survival of the Sickest: The Surprising Connections Between Disease and Longevity, by Dr. Sharon Moalem (Sharon is male-other years have mistaken him for a female). After you read, you will write a 2-3 page reflection of the book. This should be double spaced and can include questions, comments, connections to other ideas in biology, or connections to your life. You should include examples (at least 3) from the book and please cite page numbers from the text. It should read like a journal entry but please remember to proofread! I’m hoping that this book excites you about our year in AP Biology and all the topics we will be covering next year! It is an easy read and I hope you all enjoy it. You may buy the book (used copies are as low as $1.99, and there are ebook/kindle versions) or you may use the pdf provided in the Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/a/oratoryprep.org/file/d/0B_j7Kgj9pUN4V3FwODlwSnN6cVk/view?u sp=sharing The OP Writing Rubric will be used to grade this assignment. Part II Ecology Chapters
Due Tuesday, September 6th
You will begin the ecology unit on your own. Of all the units, this is the easiest one which is why it is assigned over the summer. When you return to class in the fall we will discuss these concepts. We will also do our first lab (Animal Behavior) based on the first chapter you will read. Read chapters 51-56 and answer the questions for each chapter. After the chapter questions, there are two AP response questions to answer. Questions: (76 total points-homework) Chapter 51 (16) 1. How is behavior defined? 2. Give specific species examples of the following behaviors/terms: a. Sign stimuli b. Kinesis c. Taxis d. Circadian rhythm e. Pheromones f. Altruistic behavior 3. How do the above behaviors relate to the idea of natural selection?

Chapter 52: (4) 1. Explain how it is both abiotic and biotic factors that influence an ecosystem. In your explanation mention some specific examples of abiotic and biotic factors. Chapter 53: (12) 1. What does it mean for a population to be in exponential growth? What will the per capita birth and death rates be if a population demonstrates zero population growth? 2. What are two examples that might lead to exponential population growth in natural populations? 3. What are three examples of limiting resources that can influence carrying capacity? 4. Distinguish between K and r-selected populations and give examples of each type of organism who will exhibit these models. Chapter 54: (12) 1. How can the predator prey relationship lead to coevolution? Explain your answer by giving an example. 2. Give examples of Batesian and Mullerian mimicry. 3. Give an example of aposematic coloration. 4. Distinguish between the different types of symbiotic relationships, parasitism, commensalism, and mutualism. 5. Name one example of a keystone species and explain the effect its removal will have on the ecosystem. 6. Give a scenario that would cause primary ecological succession to begin and then trace the steps that would occur in order to have a flourishing, thriving ecosystem (with plants and animals). Chapter 55: (12) 1. What types of organisms are always at the first trophic level? 2. What is eutrophication and what contributes to this? 3. Generally the amount of energy that is available at one trophic level is what amount? 4. What roles do humans have in the carbon cycle (name all ways they contribute)? The water cycle? the nitrogen cycle? 5. Explain the process of biomagnification. Why is this a concern? 6. What is the greenhouse effect? How do humans play a role in increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide? Chapter 56: (2) 1. Explain how one threat to biodiversity reduced biodiversity. 2. What is the difference between an endangered species and a threatened species?
