[email protected] Course Description from TEA Website: “The primary focal areas in Grade 7 are number and operations; proportionality; expressions, equations, and relationships; and measurement and data. Students use concepts, algorithms, and properties of rational numbers to explore mathematical relationships and to describe increasingly complex situations. Students use concepts of proportionality to explore, develop, and communicate mathematical relationships, including number, geometry and measurement, and statistics and probability. Students use algebraic thinking to describe how a change in one quantity in a relationship results in a change in the other. Students connect verbal, numeric, graphic, and symbolic representations of relationships, including equations and inequalities. Students use geometric properties and relationships, as well as spatial reasoning, to model and analyze situations and solve problems. Students communicate information about geometric figures or situations by quantifying attributes, generalize procedures from measurement experiences, and use the procedures to solve problems. Students use appropriate statistics, representations of data, and reasoning to draw conclusions, evaluate arguments, and make recommendations. While the use of all types of technology is important, the emphasis on algebra readiness skills necessitates the implementation of graphing technology.” We will cover the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) objectives, in order to prepare for the STAAR test. There will be emphasis on problem-solving, real world application, and technology. We will practice and maintain the math skills we already know, as well as learn and build new math skills. Resource math students’ Individual Education Plan (IEP) modifications will also be implemented. We will follow the same curriculum as the other 7th grade Math classes as closely as possible, but will also include remediation activities.
Daily Supplies Needed: 3 ring binder with dividers Math Spiral (for taking notes) 2 pencils with erasers (if mechanical, bring extra lead!) Assignment sheet/Tracking folder
Completed Homework Library/Book Talk book Earbuds/Headphones (leave in your locker, but prepared to have them when needed
Grading Policy: 50% Class work, Homework, Quizzes
50% Tests/Projects
All work must be completed in pencil and turned in on time.
SHOW YOUR WORK! DANFORTH JUNIOR HIGH POLICY ON LATE WORK: Assignments turned in 1 day late will receive 70% of the points Assignments turned in 2 days late will receive 50% of the points Assignments turned in 3 or more days late will receive a grade of zero
I WILL ACCEPT WORK UNTIL 4:00 ON THE DUE DATE FOR FULL CREDIT. Students who have been absent will need to turn in previous assignments the day they return to school. When possible, students and/or parents should make arrangements to get assignments before the student is absent so the student can work on them at home. For make-up work following an absence, students must utilize tutorial time and time at home to get the work completed and turned in. The student will be allowed one makeup day for each day absent before make-up work is counted late. The purpose of homework is to practice a skill learned in class. Emphasis should be on mastering the skill rather than strictly the score on the paper. If the skill is not mastered, the student should take responsibility to ask questions, get help, and come to tutorials! The more a student utilizes his/her class time, the less homework they should bring home! There will be a sign in sheet for tutorials, and students must be actively working on an academic assignment. Students with blank or forgotten homework will be redirected to the library or back to the cafeteria.
Math Department Correction Policy – 7th grade Homework: Corrections to grade homework may be done to raise the grade to a 70, and may be completed in tutorials or CMC. Must show work to receive credit. Tests: The student may complete test corrections to raise grade to a 70. Often we will do these together as a class, or students will work on in CMC. To earn credit, students must show work and proof of thinking.
*Resource math follows the WISD and DJH 7th grade policies for grading, tests, and homework, unless the student’s IEP specifies differently.*
Class Rules: As a Texan, with pride for Danforth Jr. High, you are expected to: 1. Listen and follow directions. 2. Think, then speak. 3. Respect (teachers, classmates, and yourself). 4. Take responsibility. 5. Be prepared and ready to learn. Classroom Management Plan: School and classroom rules will be followed at all times. The class rules will be posted in the room. Behaviors/concerns will be addressed as an individual case. Consequences and plan of action are dependent upon each case. The following are general guidelines used in the classroom to manage behaviors:
VERBAL WARNING PRIVATE CONVERSATION WITH TEACHER PHONE CALL TO PARENT / NOTIFY ADMINISTRATION AND SPED REFERRAL TO OFFICE / NOTIFY PARENT / ADMINISTRATION / SPED **FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON DISTRICT RULES/GUIDELINES REGARDING STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE, PLEASE SEE THE WISD STUDENT/PARENT HANDBOOK**
PARENTS: Please check your student’s tracking folder or assignment sheet and/or the Message Center online in Family Access often for assignments and other class information that will keep your student on track. Contact me right away if you have questions/concerns regarding your child.
