Edo de Waart Music Director
2015.16 Annual Report
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s 2015.16 season was a success both on and off stage. The highlight of the season may very well have been the two weeks in the spring when the orchestra, led by Maestro Edo de Waart, performed and recorded all four Brahms symphonies. These weeks were a testament to the artistic acumen of not only Edo, but of the orchestra he built over several seasons. We look forward to sharing these great performances with you again in May 2017 as we release the recordings during Edo’s final months as our music director. We opened our season with the second installment of the three semi-staged Mozart-da Ponte operas — Cosí fan tutte. This amazing production was directed by James Darrah, who led us through the complicated story of misplaced love, deception, and confusion with tremendous success. Cosí, of course, was not the MSO’s only opera experience. Our partnership with the Florentine Opera Company continues to flourish. The season was particularly rewarding as Francesco Lecce-Chong, our former associate conductor, led the MSO and Florentine through Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. We were also thrilled to have Francesco conduct our classics subscription concert of Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto with his classmate Natasha Paremski as well as another successful series of Handel’s Messiah with the incomparable MSO Chorus. We welcomed Assistant Conductor Yaniv Dinur in January, and his appointment has been a great success. One of Yaniv’s first performances was our Secret Symphony, a unique concert experience that took place in a Milwaukee office building. You can read more about this expanding series in our year in review.
We had a wonderful success over Valentine’s Day with a Frank Sinatra-inspired concert that sold out. I was not alone in my excitement with the return of Doc Severinsen to the Milwaukee Symphony. He was the reason I picked the trumpet in elementary school band. And at 89, he still has it!! Last season was a record breaking year in ticket sales. We experienced a 32 percent increase in new MSO patrons over the previous season, 20 concerts sold out, and we had an eight percent increase in single ticket sales, which is on top of an increase the previous season. We launched a new website in January which brought about a 38 percent increase in tickets sold online. Due to your generosity, we experienced a four percent increase in contributed income in 2015.16, and of the 4,318 donors who supported the MSO Annual Fund, 1,411 were new donors. Our nationally recognized education programs reached more than 40,000 students in Southeastern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois through our Concerts for Schools, Family Series, and Arts in Community Education (ACE) Program. We are pleased to announce a balanced budget for the 2015.16 season. It is our fourth balanced budget in the last five years. We continue to have internal alignment with our musicians, board, and staff, and we would like to thank our community, patrons, donors, and volunteers for once again passionately supporting the MSO with attendance, time, and treasure. Because of your tireless commitment, our orchestra continues to be a cultural asset for anyone and everyone in the Greater Milwaukee community.
In May, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus and bid farewell to Lee Erickson with a riveting performance of Verdi’s Requiem. The dedication of this wonderful group of volunteer musicians is a gift to all of us. Our ever-evolving pops series continues to expand. We saw great success with Orchestra and film presentations. The Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II performances were so successful that we repeated the concert at the Ravinia Festival in the MSO’s first appearance at the famed concert venue. The MSO also performed to sold-out crowds with classic movies Home Alone and The Snowman.

2015.16 In Review
MSO + ME Community members performed side-by-side with MSO string, woodwind, brass, and percussion musicians in our second annual MSO + Me concert. Forty community musicians took part in this unique event and spent an afternoon rehearsing with the orchestra, mingling with musicians, and then performing with the MSO for family and friends in Uihlein Hall. Led by assistant conductor Yaniv Dinur, the blended orchestra performed music by Tchaikovsky, Berlioz, Elgar, and Stravinsky.
BACH DOUBLE WINNER IS NEW STAR OF TOMORROW The Forte Young Artist Auditions and Audrey G. Baird Stars of Tomorrow Concert this season featured a familiar face. The Stars of Tomorrow winner, Arianna Brusubardis (violin), also won the Bach Double competition during the 2014.15 season. The Young Artist Auditions are open to all Wisconsin high school string, woodwind, brass, and percussion musicians. The top three winners have the honor of appearing as soloists with the MSO at the Stars of Tomorrow Concert and are eligible for scholarships. Finalists and honorable mentions are given the opportunity to play side-by-side with MSO musicians.
WELCOME, SHARED EXPERIENCES This season, the MSO created the Shared Experiences Department. The goals of the department are to offer new and unique experiences, evaluate and strengthen existing programs, build our volunteer base, and increase fundraising and sponsorship support of events. In addition, Shared Experiences aims to build relationships throughout the city, from adding corporate sponsorships to establishing partnerships with nonprofit organizations and Milwaukee neighborhoods who are craving a different kind of symphony experience. 5
MOZART AT THE PABST The MSO returned to the Pabst Theater in April for a highly successful Mozart Festival. The concerts featured four Mozart symphonies as well as music by composers influenced by the Classical style.
“Lewis, who conducted both Mozart symphonies on the evening’s program without a score, used simple tools to create a beautifully layered performance, including a host of dynamic contrasts, a variety of artfully weighted accents, and precisely placed, cleanly executed ornaments. The orchestra responded with tightly knit ensemble work and colorful playing.” ELAINE SCHMIDT, MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL
EDO’S TENURE COMMEMORATED WITH BRAHMS RECORDINGS In May, Maestro Edo de Waart led the orchestra through all four Brahms symphonies. Each of the symphonies was recorded and will be available during de Waart’s final three weeks as music director of the MSO.
“The performances of the composer’s last two symphonies hit the same high level as the previous weekend, with Edo de Waart and the orchestra in peak form …The details of the orchestration easily emerged in a disciplined and shapely fashion.” RICK WALTERS, SHEPHERD EXPRESS
COMMUNITY ANSWERS CHALLENGE AGAIN WITH JUST DUET 2016 Once again the Just Duet: Argosy Foundation Challenge Grant exceeded our expectations and the generosity of our donors, patrons, and volunteers was truly inspiring. The Argosy Foundation offered to match all new and increased gifts dollar-for-dollar up to $250,000. Including the funds contributed from the Argosy Foundation, the MSO raised more than $640,000! A total of 785 new donors and 464 donors who increased their giving made this spectacular result possible. Thank you! 6
SYMPHONY SOIRÉE OFFERS UNIQUE EXPERIENCE The Symphony Soirée, our signature gala, was once again a huge success. Guests were invited to sit on stage and experience a concert from the vantage point of a musician. They watched Maestro de Waart lead the orchestra, cue musicians, and attendees witnessed the passion of a conductor at work. President and Executive Director Mark Niehaus led an interview-style discussion and shared more about the pieces and the orchestra. We raised more than $250,000 in support of our education programs during the live and silent auctions—in addition to the money raised from our generous event sponsors.
COSÍ FAN TUTTE The MSO opened the 2015.16 season with the second in the cycle of Mozartda Ponte operas with the semi-staged performance of Cosí fan tutte, directed by James Darrah and conducted by Maestro Edo de Waart.
“The production, led from the podium by MSO music director Edo de Waart and directed by James Darrah, winnowed away the traditions of period costumes and opulent sets to focus attention on the comic opera’s requisite elements: music and story.” ELAINE SCHMIDT, MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL
SECRET SYMPHONY ACCOMPLISHES MISSION IMPOSSIBLE Did you choose to accept your mission for our first Secret Symphony? 325 Milwaukeeans, most new to the MSO, gathered at the City Center at 735 building on Water Street for a unique spy-themed event hosted by Crescendo. The evening included a concert by the full orchestra, food and drink provided by SafeHouse, and the chance to complete “missions” for prizes. Some of the missions included: “This Note Will Self-Destruct — Play an “A” on a string instrument to proceed,” “Takes Two to Tango — Master a few steps to sweep a mark off their feet,” and “Assemble Your Weapon — Reassemble an instrument in 60 seconds or less.” Prizes included gift certificates to local hot spots and tickets to future MSO concerts. All concert attendees received a pair of ear buds courtesy of Koss. A total of $40,000 in-kind sponsorships and more than 40 volunteers supported the event.
MILWAUKEE SYMPHONY CHORUS CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON The MSO Chorus celebrated its 40th Anniversary Season in 2015.16 and performed the works of Mozart, Bruckner, Walton, Handel, and Verdi. Over its four decades of existence, the 150-member chorus has grown in artistry and stature, known and respected as one of the finest choruses in the country. The chorus has been praised for “technical agility,” “remarkable ensemble cohesion,” and “tremendous clarity.” In addition to performances with the MSO, the chorus has appeared on public television and recorded performances on radio stations throughout the country. The chorus has performed a cappella concerts to sold-out audiences and has made guest appearances with other performing arts groups including the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra, Present Music, Milwaukee Ballet, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The chorus has also made many appearances at suburban Chicago’s famed Ravinia Festival. “I cannot overstate the value of the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus to the entire organization,” said Mark Niehaus, MSO president and executive director. “The chorus is an integral part of the MSO. This excellent ensemble of volunteer singers enriches and strengthens our performances, whether it is masterworks or newly commissioned pieces.”
GIVING TUESDAY The MSO’s annual Giving Tuesday campaign was a huge success. For several weeks ahead of December 1, 2015, appeals went out through multiple channels — videos, social media, email, website, Encore program book inserts, direct mail, and personal asks. Two donations totaling $10,000 were gifted as a challenge grant. The campaign raised more than $30,000 in one day, and 90 percent of participants were new or lapsed donors. Thank you to everyone who participated in this event’s success.

ORCHESTRA MEET DRUM LINE
WUWM HIGHLIGHTS THE ACE PROGRAM
The Rufus King High School Drum Line joined the MSO for two Link Up The Orchestra Rocks performances. The MSO, in partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, brings the Link Up program to our community. Link Up pairs orchestras across the country with students in grades 3–5 at schools in their local communities to explore orchestra repertoire through a year-long, hands-on music curriculum. The concerts featured Cabaniss’s “Come to Play” and “Drumlines,” Orff’s “O Fortuna” from Carmina burana, and excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 and Holst’s The Planets.
In August, WUWM’s Rachel Morello interviewed Karli Larsen, MSO director of education, and Walt Boyer, music educator at Atwater Elementary School, about our nationally acclaimed Arts in Community Education (ACE) program. The interview highlighted the impact that ACE has on students and how teachers integrate arts into everyday curriculum. The MSO also announced the commission of grade-specific music composed by John Tanner of Tanner-Monagle, Inc.
