SM’S MOST APPRECIATED TEACHERS STUDENTS WEIGH IN ON THEIR FAVORITE TEACHERS ON CAMPUS
Dance Team Takes On Florida! By Alexa Kosco
Congratulations to our Eagle Dance Team who have returned from their Florida competition as champions! Our dancers spent 5 brutal days, from Thursday to Monday, at the Contest of Champions held at Walt Disney World in Orlando and came out on top. While the girls got to enjoy the first few days team bonding at all the parks and Downtown Disney, Saturday and Sunday were solely devoted to competing. They performed eight routines and placed either 1st or 2nd in each one. And special congratulations to our five soloists who all places in the top 10! These soloists include Lauren Arriola, Julia Ruiz, Katelyn DatoOn, Deja Pelayo and Sarah Pollard. Julia Ruiz, who
placed 2nd in her solo, says, “It is such a great honor, and I won a $500 college scholarship!” The team also won a prestigious invitation to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this upcoming Fall and finished as one of the highest scoring teams across the nation! Florida was an amazing trip for all the dancers. Kaitlyn Burrola says, “Florida was amazing! Safaris, face painting, roller coasters, and a great competition of course! It was our last trip with the seniors though, and I am going to miss them so much next year. They are all amazing and part of the team family!” This year’s seniors include: Lauren Arriola, Cortney Holloway, Julia Ruiz, Sarah Pollard,
Melanie Pellizzon, Jenna Henry, Marina Johnson, Hannah Jones, Sommer Adams, and Brittania Porterfield. Sarah Pollard is the team’s Captain, and Melanie Pellizzon and Jenna Henry are CoCaptains. Unity Leaders include Cortney Holloway, Brittania Porterfield, Sarah Wainschel and Katelyn Dato-On. Florida is our dance team’s time to shine, and they have put in a lot of hard work to get there.
Their competitions start in January, but practice begins in June. They have seven competitions throughout the course of the season, two of which are at the national level. Their next and final competition is at the Disneyland Convention Center on March 25 and 26, so be sure to come support your Eagle Dancers as they compete at Nationals again! Not only does our Dance Team compete and perform at games and rallies, but every spring they put on the Spring
16
Dance Concert. The concert will take place this year from May 18 to 21st and will showcase Dance Team, IB Dance, and all of our dance classes. Lauren Arriola says, “I’ll miss Spring Concert. It’s always my favorite part of the year. It’s no stress, just a good time! Everyone better go this year. It’s going to be great. Be ready!”
Ni Hao, China! MUN Delegates Return from Beijing By Lindsey Mann
This week, freshly cultured MUNers will be stumbling back into the classroom with new senses of the world, of their political identities, knowledge of Asian history and culture, insight into a totalitarian communist government, as well as some always-fabulous jetlag. That’s right, the Beijing MUN students are back in the country! Each day was jam-packed with cultural experiences and daring feats. I’ll have you know that almost all the students on this once-in-a-lifetime journey stepped beyond their boundaries to make it an experience to last. Though these travelers may argue, “What happens in China, stays in China,” you fortunate SMeagle readers are allowed into a behind-the-borders glance at what transpired over the 8-day trip. Upon arrival in Shanghai, we embarked on our first “haggling” experience. We shopped along the streets and even alley-ways to stock up on our imports while
practicing our street-sense and manipulation skills to get the best price. The shopping experience was a major adrenaline rush. The competition on the streets was fierce, literally! Some vendors would grab you by the arms and drag you to their stand, while others would barricade you from leaving. Useful tips for haggling: Step 1. Ask the price, and upon hearing it, say, “tài guì le” (thai guay-luh) meaning “It’s too expensive!” Step 2. Offer under to half the price of what the original offer was. Step 3. Say that you are a student. Step 4. Begin to walk to the next stand. And for those who flock to you in the streets to buy their inventories, just say “Bu Yao” meaning “I don’t want
it” and keep walking. Other words that the MUN group found useful included “Xièxiè” (shie-shie) meaning “thank you,” “ni hao” (nee-how) meaning “hello,” “Zàijiàn” (zai gien) meaning “good-bye,” “píngshuǐ” (ping-shwei) meaning “water bottle,” “li hai” (lee ha) meaning “awesome” or “stud,” and “Shuàigē” (shwa-guh) meaning “hot guy.” In Beijing, the group hiked up the “Hero’s route” to the top of the Great Wall, and some even carved their families’ names there. When the group emerged from the subway steps to see Tienemen Square and Mao Zedong’s painted face in full view, we knew we were a long way from home. Many found that being able to witness the Communist government was crucial
to understanding America and the freedoms that are not granted in all nations. This trip was one that indefinitely gave insight into our places in the world. All of the delegates will agree that the dining experience was a major culture shock as well. Yes, we were able to eat sushi and chow-mien for breakfast, but more often did we eat foods which we cannot name, because, in all honesty, we didn’t have a clue what they were! Some of the more daring travelers didn’t hesitate to consume fish heads, scorpions, beetles, and starfish! I guess you can say that the trip was all in good taste… But in order to play hard, one must work hard. When BEIMUN rolled around, the delegates could be spotted preparing well-thought out and succinct resolutions as conditioned by extensive research and innovative solution drafting. Though each delegate put forth exceptional efforts, the group landed three “Best
Delegate” awards from Krista Ury in Environment, Jessica Drivas in General Assembly 3, and Lindsey Mann in Special Conference 2. Only a single award is given to one delegate in each committee recognizing his or her phenomenal achievements in speaking, debating, diplomacy, knowledge, commitment to country policy, and efforts in drafting resolutions for the United Nations on pressing world issues. As always, the Americans broke the ice at the delegate dance Saturday night and united the international students to bring their best moves to the dance floor. It was easy to spot a SM delegate in the midst of a mosh-pit of international students while the dance chanted “U-S-A, U-S-A!”

8.9 Earthquake Strikes Japan, Tsunami Warnings for California Coast
By Lauren Gardner An 8.9 magnitude
earthquake struck the Honshu region of Japan on March 11, 2011. It is being reported as the most powerful earthquake to hit the area in 100 years, causing widespread fires and walls of water up to 30 feet high. The earthquake and its subsuqent tsunami have swept away homes, rice fields, and boats, according to eyewitness reports and aerial video footage of the disaster. Mark John Bennett, an American missionary in the Chiba Prefecture in Narashino, caught the scene on his phone’s camera at his home near Tokyo bay. The video shows water
surrounding the area and fallen telephone lines, and Bennet can be heard exclaiming during one of the over 154 aftershocks to strike that, “Our entire block is moving, it’s like an island!” An oil refinery near the prefecture has since caught fire, sparking more fires in the surrounding area. As of yet, firefighters have been unable to get close enough to extinguish the fire because of the overwhelming heat. In comparison, the earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010 had a magnitude of 7.0 and the one that devastated Christchurch, the second largest city in New Zealand, in February had a magnitude

of 6.9. Some experts theorize that, because of their location, the recent earthquakes in Chile, New Zealand, and Japan may somehow be linked. Alarmingly, the earthquake appears to have moved the main island of Japan 8 feet (2.4 meters) from its original geological position and has shifted the Earth on its axis, reports CNN. As of March 13th, an estimated 10,000 are dead, approximately 1,900 are injured, and 1,400 have been reported missing. Transportation in Tokyo and the surrounding areas has ceased, and trains have been derailed by the tsunami waves. At least 23,000 travelers are stranded in the Haneda and Narita airports, and approximately 4 million homes in Tokyo and its surrounding areas have lost power. Concerns have arisen as to the security of a nuclear power plant in Fukushima. Four explosions have taken place and six reactors at the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 plants have undergone cooling failure since Friday.
A state of emergency has been declared. Cool sea water was being pumped into the facility to prevent a further catastrophe and to keep the plant as cool as possible, but on Tuesday morning, it was discovered that radiation leaks have begun to spread from the nuclear power plant. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has imposed an 18-mile (30km) no-fly zone around the area, and 140,000 Japanese people have been ordered to seal themselves indoors to protect themselves from radiation. The nuclear disaster is currently rated a six out of seven on the international damage scale, one point lower than the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.Japan’s prime minister has dispatched 8,000 troops and asked for United States aid in the relief effort. President Obama said that the United States is standing by to help “in this time of great trial.” The United States, as per Japan’s request, will be sending the USS Ronald Reagan along
with a missile cruiser and destroyer ship for relief. So far, 49 countries and the European Nation have pledged to provide aid for Japan. The United States Weather Service has issued tsunami warnings for at least 50 countries, reaching as far as the USA and Russia. A series of tsunami waves hit Hawaii on Friday morning. Honolulu’s KITV reports that an estimated $300 million of damage has been done by the tsunami, with the worst at Kealakekua on the Big Island and at Maelea Harbor and Kahului on Maui. Waves have come ashore on the United States mainland from Washington to California, capsizing several sailing vessels in harbors in Santa Cruz and San Diego. Crescent City harbor was essentially destroyed, suffering millions of dollars’ worth of damage. Dustin Weber, 25, from Bend, Oregon, was swept to sea and killed while trying to take photographs. The best we can do now is be careful and stay prepared.
of being arrested again; this release occurred after the King denied his requests for a monarch government. On February 21, 2011, many Bahrainis moved to an area called the Pearl Roundabout due to its “symbolic location” in hopes that it will capture even more attention from the government. As of February 22, 2011, seven people have been killed in these rebellions and 25 have been hospitalized. The fear of this revolt affects America’s transportation of goods to troops in the Middle East, making it difficult to send needed supplies to American soldiers. In Libya, democratic protests have spread over this North African region, controlled by dictator Moammar Gadhafi for forty two years. He has been known for acts of aggression towards the
West, such as violent bombings, but still has hopes of unifying Africa. The Libyan citizens are now rebelling in hopes of removing Gadhafi from power. Over his years of dictatorship, people believe that he has limited political power by slowly taking it away from the people, making them think that they are still involved. The internet in Libya was shut down on February 22, apparently by the government, to put a stop to protests. Many
Americans are highly concerned for the high amount of oil exports that are provided by Libya. Gadhafi stated on Monday, February 21, 2011, that oil exports should continue, but the outcome in Libya is not likely to be pretty. He has also stated that there is an “80% chance that he will go, 20% chance that he will stay.” Gadhafi believes that there is no other person who has the ability to take on his leadership roles in Libya.
Rebelling in the Middle East
By Sophie Turner As the Constitution
in Egypt is being redrafted, several other countries are following in the footsteps of the terror that broke out in Cairo. The overthrow of Mubarak’s power and the recent freezing of his bank accounts has not only affected Egypt, but also has spread ideas to many surrounding Middle Eastern countries. Bahrain, Libya, Yemen and Iran have begun rebelling against their governments in hope of bringing about change. In the city of Manama, Bahrain, thousands of protesters have lined the streets to rebel against the government. After the funeral of a protester that was killed on Thursday, February 17, 2011, many protesters have tried to gain the attention of the government and the kingdom. The large rally taking place after this
funeral, put on by the citizens, led King Hamad to present a national dialogue to the public, announcing his desire for people to “move away from polarization.” The King hopes that this national dialogue will help people to understand that they are a part of the future of Bahrain. Many prisoners who had been arrested for supposedly plotting against the kingdom were released on Tuesday, February 22, 2011. Mushaimaa Haq presented a movement based on the idea of a government run by the monarchy. Many people in Bahrain are continuing to express their disdain for this proposal. Mushiaimma, who has been in exile for apparent plotting of terrorist attacks, was released on February 22 and can now live in Bahrain without the fear

Boys Volleyball is #1! By Evan Edwards The Eagles boys’ volleyball team begins their season at No. 1 in the country and No. 4 in the Southern Section division. Even after losing senior, Mike McMahon last year, the team still has great talent and experience returning for this season. The Eagles hope to repeat winning league this year and go even further in the CIF playoffs this after losing to Mira Costa last year in the semifinals. According to OCVarsity. com, the team’s most notable returners are: Ryan Baine, Spencer Buckley, Taylor Hammond, Mitchell Vallis, and Evan Engel. Of these 5, 3 of them have committed to division I colleges. Ryan Baine is going to Loyola Chicago, Spencer Buckley is going to UCSB, and Taylor Hammond has committed to Penn State. On March 3,
the Eagles started off their season against Loyola High School, who has won CIF titles 2 years in a row, and at the time was ranked No. 1 in CIF. The team had no problem defeating the cubs in 4 games, 25-21, 19-25,
in The Best of The West tournament in San Diego. The boys rebounded from this loss to take second place in the tournament. The boys next game is a contest against a talented Newport Harbor team
MLB Spring Training
By John Rastoka It’s the time of the year for the nation’s baseball teams to travel to spring training in preparation for the season in April. Diehard fans of the sport will even follow their favorite teams to see the newly recruited players, and see how the team is doing. Most of the teams travel to Arizona or Florida, in order to train for the upcoming season. looking better than others right now. Here are the MLB’s top three in my opinion .Number one: the New York Yankees. Not only do they have the most money of any team in the MLB, they are in talks of giving Rangers’ pitcher Cliff Lee an opportunity to play for them. The Yankees also have one of the best players from last season, Robinson Cano. He has made himself a necessity for a Yankees team that hopes to make another playoff run. The next team is the defending World Series champs the San Francisco Giants. With their superior pitching, they look like top contenders. The final team is the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are strong every year and 2011 will be no exception. Some predict that the Phillies will win the World Series this year with the help of Ryan Howard’s power numbers. The leadership of Jimmy Rollins and the pitching of Roy Halladay can take this team a very long way. In all, this looks to be a promising season for the MLB.

I’m a Belieber! By Daniela Huebner It wasn’t too long ago that I was writing an article about Justin Bieber for the school newspaper back in 2009; the only difference was that then, almost no one even knew who he was. Since that time, Justin Bieber has exploded on to the mainstream and has won the hearts of millions of girls around the world in an amazingly short amount of time. This recently turned seventeenyear-old superstar’s career has been rapidly increasing almost daily, as his new music, new commercial products, and new documentary movie have turned even the most stubborn anti-Bieber teens into Beliebers (a term coined by fans who support
Justin Bieber). His album, My World 2.0, was released last year and instantly sold millions of copies and produced instant hits such as “Baby” and “Somebody to Love.” He was even nominated for two Grammy awards, one for Best New Artist, and another for Best Pop Vocal Album. More recently, Bieber released his movie, Never Say Never, on February 11th of this year, which documented his rise to stardom and depicted a more down-to-earth Justin than the media world was used to. After seeing his movie (four times to be exact, uhh...), I seriously fell in love with him even more, and I didn’t even think that was possible.
Justin’s movie grossed more than 30 million dollars in its opening weekend and turned many girls here at Santa Margarita into complete and utter Beliebers. With his breathtakingly good looks, perfectly talented voice, and sweet and gentle nature, it’s hard not to fall for Justin. So if any of you reading this are still on the fence about Bieber, I suggest you see his movie as soon as possible, preferably in 3D; it’ll seem like you can almost reach out and grasp on to those luscious locks of his. Soon enough, you’ll find yourself saying, “I’m a Belieber!”
By Allison Le Growing up in Southside Jamaica, Queens, New York, Nicki Minaj has revealed herself as the New Queen of Hip-Hop. Although Nicki’s childhood was a jagged road filled with drug-addicted parents and violence, she still managed to graduate from LaGuardia High School in Manhattan where she studied singing and acting. This acting has come to light in most of her songs and collaborations with famous artists such as: Drake, Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, Eminem, Rihanna and more. Her originality has sparkled with her numerous alter-egos. On a semi-recent interview with Chelsea Handler, Nicki explains that she has “Nicki,” “Barbie,” “Roman,” “Martha,” and “Rosa” (pronounced
Rrrrrosa). “Nicki” is the typical everyday voice of a girl from Southside Jamaica, Queens; “Barbie” is the soft, overly feminine voice; “Roman” is overly honest, flamboyant boy that appears from time to time; “Martha” is Roman’s mother; and “Rosa” is the newest addition that was Spanish-inspired. Nicki sprinkles these alteregos all over her album Pink Friday. Pink Friday explores many different personalities in its songs from “Roman’s Revenge” to “Moment 4 Life.” Pink Friday hit the shelves on November 19, 2010 and had the highest first selling week ever for a female rapper. The year 2010 was a great year for Nicki Minaj. She received
acknowledgments from many different networks as “Best New Artist” or “Upcoming Artist” at: The Grammy Awards 2011, MTV Video Music Awards, BET Awards, Teen Choice Awards, etc. However, in the New Year Nicki’s fans, as well as the music industry, have only witnessed the commencement of this powerhouse artist’s reign and we expect to hear more, much more.

Going Out In Style By Andrew Quirk
On March 1, the Irish rock band Dropkick Murphys released their seventh studio album, Going Out In Style. You may have never heard of the Dropkick Murphys, but you have most certainly heard their music, especially if you’ve seen The Departed, which features the song I’m Shipping Up to Boston. Formed in Massachusetts in the late 90’s, the Dropkick Murphys combine Celtic music and Irish folklore with punk rock to create a unique sound that includes the strumming of a banjo and the wheezing of bagpipes. Dropkick sings for unity, brotherhood, and overall good times as they tour the world and release new albums. While listening to Dropkick Murphys, one can attest to the fact that it is almost irresistible to sing along with the
easy-to-learn, fistpumping choruses. This new album features thirteen tracks that takes the band’s own personal experiences and family folklore and rolls them into the story of a fictional character named Cornelius Larkin. It starts with the end of Larkin’s life and mentions in the title track how he is going to have a huge party with all of his friends and family, and how he is “going out in style”, apologizing for urinating on a friend’s couch in the process. Legendary singer Bruce Springsteen even contributes his gruff vocals on the track Peg O’ My Heart. Say what you want about Dropkick Murphys, but they will always have a special place in my heart as one of my favorite bands of all time.
Queen of Pop
By Danielle Rankine The queen of pop
has announced on Twitter that her newest album “Born This Way” will be released May 23, 2011. This is Lady GaGa’s third album released in the past four years. The music industry believes it album will be a major hit around the world and will bring pop music to the next level. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Lady GaGa’s new album; some think that she has copied Madonna’s album “Express Yourself,” in 1989. Madonna is a very talented woman who we all worship, and recently, Lady GaGa has taken over her place. Lady GaGa is a fresher, more hip version of Madonna. Before releasing her single “Born This Way,” Lady GaGa informed on Leno that Madonna’s team gave their blessings regarding the track. GaGa
said: “You know, there is really no one that is a more adoring and loving Madonna fan than me. I am the hugest fan personally and professionally.” Gaga also added, “Well, the good news is that I got an email from her people and her, sending me their love and complete support on behalf of the single. And if the Queen says ‘it shall be’ then it shall be.” GaGa coproduced all her albums and wrote every song on her own. She is an amazing artist and extremely talented. GaGa can be out of the ordinary and more than a little weird, but that is what makes her unique and so talented. She reaches out to everyone in her new single “Born This Way.”

It’s Saint Patrick’s Day Eagles! Everyone knows what happens on St. Patrick’s Day at SM, Mr. Dunne’s Irish jig.It is something that we have come to expect over the years that makes our school unique. What other school can say that their principal does an Irish jig during lunch on St. Patrick’s Day? This has become a highly anticipated SMCHS tradition. The phenomenon has ended up on YouTube! So, how does Mr. Dunne even know how to Irish dance? When did he start this tradition? Read on. What is your favorite part about being Irish? Mr. Dunne: The Irish are a very optimistic people. How did you learn to Irish dance? My grandmother taught me a few of the basic steps when I was young.
What was the first year you did your Irish jig for the students? How did they respond? Well, the first year would’ve been the 2007-2008 school year, so St. Patrick’s Day 2008. The students were shocked at first that a principal would do that, but they were all clapping and cheering. It was fun. By the next school year, they were all coming up to me saying, “Are you going to do it again this year? You have to do it again!” What was St. Patrick’s Day like for you as a child? In Chicago, where I was born, St. Patrick’s Day was huge. There was a St. Patrick’s Day parade. They even dyed the Chicago River green. St. Patrick’s Day was a big family day; you would go to Mass with your family.
The J’Amazing Mr.Smith! By Alexia Stamos
We all know and love the fabulous Mr. Smith. As his final days at Santa Margarita are just around the corner, we would like for the SM community to learn a little more about him and his greatest memories before he departs from our school. How many ties do you own? I haven’t counted in a while but I think I have about 90. (Mostly designer ties of course.) Is it true you never repeat wearing the same tie? When I eventually have to repeat during the year. This year I made it half way through March before repeating. Was there any situation where you forced to repeat the same tie or outfit? Nope…I plan accordingly well in advance. For example, I saved most of my purple ties for Advent and Lent.
I had a purple Burberry tie that I saved for Ash Wednesday and I made that decision back in August when I set up my tie rotation for the year. I am very organized.
I will be attending Fordham University in New York City to get a Ph.D. in Religious Education. What are you most excited for/ nervous about?
Which are your three favorite ties? 3. Blue Gucci that I bought in London 2. Orange Hermes “H’s” 1. Blue and Brown Louis Vuitton “LV” When did you start your tie collection? Well some of my ties are leftover from high school and college. (Yes, when you buy quality ties they can last forever.) But most of this all began my second year at Santa Margarita. I just didn’t want to get bored wearing the same thing every two weeks or something. I really felt the call to be a fashionisto. (You know, like a style icon.) Where are you attending college next year and what degree do you plan to obtain?
I am really excited for a new adventure in the Big Apple and really looking forward to attending tons of Broadway shows. But I have to say I am a little nervous about moving all the way across the country. New York seems pretty intimidating. Think about it.

What are you plans after college? Well my dream is to one day become a college professor. It would be j’amazing.

Good Eats, Los Angeles By Natalya Kadziauskas
I bet I speak for everyone when I say how tired I am of the same old sandwich and bag of chips basics for lunch every day. With spring break so close we can almost taste it, what I’m looking forward to the most are good eats! Known for its plethora of shopping districts and restaurant hot spots, there is no better place to satisfy my sweet tooth than Los Angeles. I have a few places bookmarked that are nothing less than delicious, and quintessentially have that fabulous Los Angeles flair. Ketchup: Located on the ever-famous Sunset Boulevard within the Sunset Millennium complex, Ketchup shines on the left hand corner of the street with its bright neon red lights. Impossible to miss while driving down the busy streets, Ketchup brings an old fashioned diner experience to the 21st century. The hostess takes you up a sleek elevator to the second floor where the rest of the restaurant lies. You are surrounded by shiny white floors and floor to ceiling windows, a breathtaking lounge with an exceptional view of the strip.
Enough of the décor, let’s get right down to the food! Ketchup takes the all American cuisine to another level with a funky twist on homemade meals. The menu is full of fun dishes like the Shake ‘N’ Bake! Enjoy fun party appetizer style dishes like four mini Kobe beef hot dogs or the mouth watering ‘Burger’ Sliders with of course, homemade ketchup. Dessert options include homemade cream filled ding dongs or the “Ice Cream Sandwich” with vanilla bean ice cream stuffed between two homemade Heath bar chocolate cookies. Ketchup is the perfect place to enjoy classic American cuisine, and catch up with friends! Milk: Bakeshop and ice cream parlor, Milk, on Beverly Blvd., is your one stop shop for all things sweet. From macaroons made fresh daily to ooey gooey chocolate chip cookies, blue and red velvet cake, moon pies, chocolate pudding, and assorted cupcakes, culinary creations at Milk will curb your enthuasim. The ice cream parlor is your ticket on a sunny California day. Select from a wide variety
of featured malts like the “MILKIE Way Malt” or “Mint Chocolate Crunch Shake.” Of course sundaes, banana splits, blondies, and fudge brownies with ice cream of your choice are sure to satisfy. The list doesn’t end there; you can even make your own ice cream sandwich by selecting the type of cookie and ice cream for your special sandwich! If you’re feeling creative, make a drumstick! Vanilla bean ice cream in a sugar cone, dipped in butterscotch, and covered in peanuts, not to forget a milk chocolate filling: okay, now we’re talking! Milk is the ultimate destination to mess with ice cream and try delectable oven-baked desserts. The Waffle: Conveniently located in the center of Hollywood, it’s your perfect any day, all day destination. The Waffle, a coffee shop tucked into a glassed-in office-building space near Hollywood and Vine, is the most waffle-intensive restaurant anywhere. From pecan waffles and chocolate waffles, multigrain waffles and waffles with applewood-smoked bacon baked
Donald Trump for President By Troy Ditzler
One of the most successful and powerful businessmen Donald Trump, has discussed running for President. Trump hasn’t officially started campaigning, but he has made numerous speeches about the problems he sees with our country. Donald Trump gained much of his success through the stock market and real estate, and for the past few years he has began constructing a world class golf course. According to CNN Trump said that he plans to put a 25% tariff on all Chinese imports. This tariff will be used to help boost American economy by creating more jobs and domestic goods. Trump will run as a republican, and hopes to bring this country back to the number one world power.
Donald Trump as President could bring back a strong economy and once again powerful America! Due to Trump’s amazing business skills, this country could once again be based on economic strength and American ingenuity. Many people imaginine what America would be like if Donald Trump was President. First off, Donald Trump has already made accusations that we are becoming a socialist country. He talks about changing our country and rebuilding it back into a world power. Trump recently spoke at CPAC, which is a conservative political campaign. He told the crowd that he would decide by June whether or not he would enter the republican presidential running.
right in, have your waffles however you like them; seriously. The Waffle is the perfect place to grab an iced tea and yummy breakfast fit to your preference before you spend a day in LA. Toast: Toast is a hip LA eatery with a laid back attitude equipped with European style dinning. In Paris most cafes are outdoor, and Toast is no
exception. Perfect for people watching, don’t be surprised if you catch a celebrity stopping by. Definitely worth the wait, enjoy the atmosphere and culture of Third Street, and try one of their award winning cupcakes!
The food is guaranteed to please your taste buds with a range of café style selections ranging from tacos to salads and burgers. At Toast you come for the food, but leave with a celebrity spotting, full stomach, and slice of red velvet cake to go. I listed only a few of the mint restaurants in Los Angeles. During spring
break, make the hour drive (without traffic) up to LA with your friends or family and try these eateries out for yourself! With so many places to play like Santa Monica, West Hollywood, and Sunset Blvd., there is no excuse not to take the day trip. On that note, I am getting a little hungry, so I’ll stop there.
Trump believes the Obama administration has ruined almost all aspects of policy, foreign and domestic. Trump himself said, “I’m prolife. I’m against gun control, and I will fight to end Obama care and replace it with a solution that will make sense for people in business and not bankrupt the country.” Many people are shocked by Trump’s talk about running, but he has thought about it before including the 2000 election when President Bush started his eight year term. Although Trump seems like a solid candidate who might be able to help turn this country around, most people either love or hate him. Trump could possibly be what America needs, but will he even run?

Favorite Chapsticks
The new generation of soda bottles
By Katy Taylor
By Chiara Palmisciano
Lip Balm has been used for centuries to cure dry chapped lips, but in the 1880s the brand Chapstick released its product, which made the word “chapstick” a general household commodity. Since then, many companies have created their own version of chapstick, which usually contain some sort of wax to lock in moisture on your lips. But which one is the best? Almost everyone has their opinion on what brand of chapstick is better than others. At Santa Margarita, 120 students were asked what their favorite is. In first place, with 50 students who claim it’s their favorite was Burt’s Bees Chapstick.
In second, the original Chapstick brand was favored by 26 students. Soft Lips came in third with 12 students and Lip Smackers in fourth with 9 students. Carmex and Blistex had a combined total of 14 students and various brands such as Nivea, Shaka Laka Lip Blaka, and Vitamin Schtick had a collective total of 9 students. Why are these brands the top lip balm products? Junior Jessica Hickey says, “I like Burt’s Bees because it’s all natural.” Chapstick brand is popular because it has been around the longest and many have recommended it from generation to generation. Brands
such as Blistex and Carmex, which are most commonly found in a jar are popular because they supposedly last longer than just a regular tube of chapstick . Lip Smackers products are usually appealing because of their many flavors from strawberry to root beer. Other brands such as Soft Lips, Shaka Laka Lip Blaka, and Nivea are also popular for their sun protection, assortment of different types and flavors, and lip hydration aspects. So, the next time there is dry, cold, or windy weather, which chapstick will you reach for?
American Red Cross Month By Selden McKnight
The American Red Cross Foundation was established in 1881 by a woman named Clara Barton. In the beginning of the Red Cross, the main focus was to gain publicity and raise funds for spontaneous catastrophes. The month of March has been considered Red Cross Month for the past sixty-eight years. Franklin Roosevelt declared March Red Cross Month after vigorous war efforts and charitable events. Roosevelt was very thrilled with the Red Cross when they raised more than $146 million after following the costly and devastating attack on Pearl Harbor. The Red Cross is always there where any help is needed, whether supporting those who were just affected by a large
hurricane or by providing food to third world countries. The Red Cross still provides these very generous donations, but over the past thirty years, Red Cross has started researching ways to safely give and receive blood. The Red Cross also provides safety and education on HIV/ AIDS to try to help lower the amount of those infected by the disease. Red Cross helps people devastated by more than 63,000 natural and other disasters on a yearly basis. After speaking with Mrs. Hormuth, she said that our very own Red Cross Club hosted a large blood drive March 3rd and will continue to hold blood drives throughout the year in order to raise blood for those in need.
March is a month to take the time to appreciate the time and money the different members and people have given for those in need. March was originally declared and is still recognized as a special month by the president each year. During Red Cross Awareness month, the Red Cross continues on with the normal events and fundraising charities as well as unveiling special campaigns. A campaign to raise money for natural disaster awareness and preparedness was announced at the beginning of February, and launched at the beginning of March. The American Red Cross will not stop when the month of March is over, and will continue to raise funds for those in need and those affected by disaster.

Recently, the CocaCola company has decided to change their signature bottle to a new, eco-friendly bottle, trying to reduce their carbon footprint on Earth. The new bottle design is able to ship six bottles for every four bottles currently shipped. This means every shipping container could hold 4,000 more bottles of Coke. Americans use two million plastic bottles every five minutes, so the bottle itself is environment friendly. It is 100% plant based, made entirely from sugar cane byproducts. Also, these new bottles can be easily reduced in size which enables them to be recycled easily. When the contents of the bottles are removed, the bottles can be shrunken up to 66% smaller than the original which can come in handy during the recycling
process. The square bottle is designed in such a way that several bottles can be stacked above each other without collapsing. Also, the cap is positioned in an offset so that it will be comfortable to drink without any mess. The bottle looks futuristic, stylish, and luxurious. This new bottle will come out sometime in 2013 and will eventually replace all the current bottles we see.

Is Accutane Worth It? By Karenna Soto
Most teenagers and adults struggle with acne. Acne is a skin condition that causes whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and inflammation of the skin. Many people have chosen Accutane as their source of treatment for acne. Accutane is a form of Vitamin A that helps remove acne from the skin and quickens the renewal of skin. It forces the skin to stop producing oil by maturing the sebaceous glands in the skin. Accutane should be used as a last resort in most cases, unless diagnosed with severe acne. According to skincarereviews.com only 38% of all patients receive a full recovery from their acne. Accutane has its risks, but is it worth it? Most drugs come with a risk, including Accutane. Some of the
side effects that may occur while taking Accutane include the following: acne flare-ups, severe skin dryness, hair thinning, hair loss, headache, eczema, fatigue, increased sensitivity to sunlight, and other skin conditions. Doctors recommend woman who are or may become pregnant should not take Accutane because dangerous birth defects are highly possible. A baby born of a woman taking Accutane is at risk of visual impairment, hearing impairment and/ or missing earlobes, facial malformations, mental retardation, heart defects and glandular central nervous system malformations. Accutane is proven to help with severe acne, but is it worth all of the side effects? Accutane will help most people with their acne, but should be only used as a last resort.

Somoas Vs. Thin Mints
By Bryce Zeimer
Girl Scout Cookies; just these three words set off a range of emotions through the senses. These are the cookies that top all others! People wait all year to receive these tasty treats! Honestly, who doesn’t enjoy a good Girl Scout Cookie? With the variety of flavors they appeal to every taste bud! As we all know, these famous cookies have switched names, but why? Well, the Scouts have traded bakeries to keep the prices down. The previous bakery the Girl scouts used took the rights to all the previously named cookies. But as smart as the Girls Scouts are, they copy wrote Thin Mints, so these minty and chocolate classics will always stay the same! Well back to the prices, $4.00 a box!! It sounds like a joke but ask any die hard Samoa or Thin Mint eater and they will always pay the price for their favorite cookie. People ask the difference between a box of Oreos and a box of Thin Mints. This question can be answered many ways. Girl Scout Cookie customers will say that they taste like no other cookies and that no matter what they will always buy a box. Those who have not enjoyed the delicacies of Girl Scout Cookies will say the price for a box is just too much. For the all the cookie lovers out there we know that not only do people want to cookies they want to know that we are helping these
girls reach their yearly amount of cookie sales. How does anyone say no to the cute little faces asking to buy cookies? Well, starting this year, even if personally don’t want cookies, you can buy cookies to send to the troops in Iraq and numerous places around the world to help stop starvation. Wow! Who knew buying cookies could not only be delicious but give you that rewarding feeling too? Now moving on to another topic, Girl Scout Cookies can be found in any house about this time in the year. But the true question is, are you a Samoa or a Thin Mint. The facts show that no other Girl Scout Cookie can compare to the minty/chocolaty goodness of a thin mint or the caramel, chocolate and coconut of the rich Samoas. These two treats put cookie sales through the roof! When I interviewed students here at Santa Margarita, those were basically the only two cookies people said. The next favorite cookie was Tagalongs, the classic peanut butter and chocolate cookie. But also while interviewing I got mixed emotions on why they liked the cookie and some reasons they don’t like other Girl Scout Cookies. Many love that Thin Mints only have a hint of mint compared to the whole chocolate cookie. And when it comes to

Samoas people love how much the caramel compliments the sugar cookie. Yet here is the thing; we all know how good these cookies taste, but some people won’t even try them! To me people are afraid to try Samoas because
they have coconut on them, and others don’t like that chocolate and mint are combined in one cookie. So for all those who are not a fan of Thin Mints or Samoas, get with the program and try a cookie, it’s really not going to hurt you!
Daylight Savings By Sean Canon Everybody, get prepared it’s time to change your clocks! On March 13, 2011, we spring forward and set our clocks back one hour then on November 6th we fall back into normal time. Daylight Savings Time is a change in the standard time of each time zone. Time zones were first used by the railroads in 1883 to standardize their schedules. Trains created the new system where major cities and regions set clocks according to local time zones. People pressed for the adoption of a standard time and hourly variations from that according to established time zones. This is how Standard time was invented and we still use these time zones to this day.
Time is not used in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and by some parts of Arizona. All other parts of the United States participate in Daylight Saving Time. Other parts of the world observe Daylight Saving Time as well. In the southern hemisphere where summer comes in December, Daylight Saving Time starts in October and ends in March.
The reason we use Daylight Saving time is to save energy. In the average home, 25 percent of all the electricity we use is for lighting and small appliances, such as TVs, VCRs and stereos. A good amount of energy consumed by lighting and appliances happen in the evening when families are home. By moving the clock back There is actually one hour, we can cut a law about Daylight down the amount of Saving Time. The electricity we consume American law by which each day. Swallows Parade
By Gina Navarro The famous cliff swallows are finally returning from their vacation from Goya, Argentina. But this time they are not returning to San Juan Capistrano like every year at the end of March. The swallows are trying a new spot to nest and breaking their tradition of thousands of years. The swallows haven’t been seen for years now after their nests were knocked down decades ago while preservation of the mission. However, people from all over California still drive to San Juan Capistrano to see the famous old legend. For years people have been trying to lure the birds back to the missions by installing ceramic nests and recording bird songs, but it hasn’t been working and they took it down because it was not authentic. Only a small number of swallows have been returning to Orange County, but their new spot is not San Juan. Some birds are nesting by colleges, shopping malls, and underneath freeways. All these issues do not stop the tradition of the 53rd annual Swallows Day Parade though. The parade this year is held on March 26thand 3,900 people are scheduled to be in it. The Parade is held in downtown San Juan Capistrano. The Fiesta De La Golondrina’s is the nation’s largest nonmotorized parade and will happen in rain or shine. Even though the swallows are breaking tradition, the Swallows Day Parade will still be occurring every year for fun!

Special Report: World Heritage
By Sofia Cornali and Lauren Gardner are then submitted to a Santa Margarita
has been fortunate enough to call itself home to several exchange students this year; among them is Sofia Cornali, a senior from Massa, Italy. As her time in America draws to a close, we here at the Eagle Eye had the opportunity to speak with Sofia about her experiences in the United States. In turn, Sofia interviewed her host family, the DeRecats, about what it was that drew them to the World Heritage foreign exchange program. SOFIA CORNALI LG: How did you first become involved in a foreign exchange program? SC: I’ve always been in love with the United States, so when it finally was time for me to tell my parents that I wanted to spend a year of High School in Orange County, they immediately contacted their friends in Fullerton who recommended Santa Margarita right away. Unfortunately, only later did we realize that Santa Margarita expected the international students to find their own families to stay with. So, with some research, our friends in Fullerton found World Heritage, which is a foreign exchange organization in Laguna Beach. Santa Margarita wasn’t even among the schools they worked with, but they helped me get into the school and complete all my paperwork nonetheless. How long is your stay in the United States? About ten months: from five days before the beginning of school to ten days after. Some students only leave for a semester (for example, they arrive before school starts and leave after 1st semester finals). What is the process like for pairing a student with a family? Students are required to write a letter and prepare a picture collage to introduce themselves to possible families. These letters are sent to all interested families who get to choose the teen that they think would be best for them. The families
background check and the student only knows about the family after the family has been “cleared.” There are occasions in which students choose to go through a private school, then the family is directly looked for in that area (which is what happened with me), but most students just want to go through public school and get automatically enrolled in the public school in the family’s district. What has it been like, becoming part of another family for the school year? At times it gets hard, but for the most part it’s amazing! I feel like my host family truly has become part of my biological family and most importantly that we really have created an everlasting friendship. How does Santa Margarita compare to your home school? My Italian school shouldn’t even be put in the same sentence as SMCHS! Santa Margarita is much better! My old school was the size of the “G” building and we have no sports whatsoever. No activities, no clubs, nothing. It’s strictly academic and hardly leaves any time for hobbies. Even worse, we go to school on Saturday. Has it been hard to be away from your family and friends for such a
deeply, the family I’m staying with constantly gives me the attention and love that I received with my family in Italy. As far as friends go, I have made some really close friendships here, but still, they’re not the people I’ve seen every day for 16, 10, 5 or three years. What have been your favorite and least favorite parts of living in the United States? My favorite part is definitely the kindness of the American people and the importance they put in family matters. I love football and school spirit. I love how non –judgmental kids are. I’m not so sure what my least favorite part could be. Maybe when people talk with thick Brooklyn-Italian accents. What made you choose Santa Margarita Catholic High School over any other school in the country? Initially, its IB Program and its location: first of all, my intention was to be a “full IB” student, but the school informed me that I would’ve had to spend 2 years at Santa Margarita. I couldn’t afford doing this because of my Italian High School schedule, but I managed to have the school insert me in courses that would give me the Graduation credits I needed. Second, it is in Orange County, where I used to come every
world! Australia, China, Canada, Sweden, Germany, Denmark, South Africa, Brazil, a huge selection! Would you recommend the World Heritage program to a student seeking to try foreign exchange? Definitely: because they’re not as big as other foreign exchange organizations, they have more time on their hands to spend on individual students and they really care and make sure that they find the right situation for the student to live in. I think it’s because of their passion and profound interest that so many students keep signing up. Unfortunately this has caused a shortage in families that are willing to host, which is why I think it would be nice for some Santa Margarita families to inquire more about this organization. I know what a great community SM offers and I think it would be great if other students could be part of it! DERECAT FAMILY SC: How did you first become involved with the foreign exchange program? DF: I read an announcement in the Admissions Newsletter, in which Mr. Ron Blanc wrote that Santa Margarita was looking for a family for an Italian girl.

Why did you want to host a foreign exchange student? Two of my daughters were away at college and it was
the perfect opportunity to open our home. I felt that the opportunity for a cultural expansion would be positive for our family and my daughter Tessa, who is a sophomore. What do you think about the organization? The organization, which hosts these children in our country, is a very well-oiled machine. World Heritage prepares the host family and the student’s family exceptionally well during the whole process, making everything much easier. They take really good care of their students and check in with them often, to make sure that everything is running smoothly. Their main objective for their students is to have them immerse themselves completely in the culture and the classic American High School experience. They have strict guidelines to follow but there are good reasons behind each rule. Would you recommend this experience? Yes, I definitely would. There’s no other way to immerse yourself in an other culture without travelling or living with someone who’s from it. I think both my family and Sofia have learned so much living together, sharing experiences and helping each other through difficult times or homesickness. Plus, technology today helps these students a lot if they do get homesick: they’re able to skype or message parents and friends whenever they want, which is great! Do you plan on hosting any other exchange students? Absolutely! It’s going to be sad when Sofia leaves our home and it’s going to feel like another child has left for college so I think I might be giving myself a year or so before I hop into the program again. But there are so many positive things about it! I would recommend this experience to anyone. The process is easier than you think because you have a lot of help along the way.

Wow! This 2011 School Year Has Gone By Quickly!
By Chris Ontiveros Football games, Homecoming, Winter Formal… it’s all already done and gone for this school year. It’s already March, which means only two more months of school and we’re out on summer break. The 2010-2011 school year is already three-fourths done, and it amazes me how another year in my high school career is already coming to a close. The school years seem to fly by, and at times if you don’t stop and appreciate them, they could slip right past you. High school is only four years, so I believe that it’s important that you try your best and work hard, but not lose sight of the fun times and memories that lie right before you. This school year to me has gone by especially fast, since I am now a sophomore. I feel more settled into the environment of SMCHS, which could contribute
to the year going by so quickly. I am personally having more fun this year also, and as the old phrase goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” I can’t believe that I’m already going to be an upperclassman next year; it feels as if the start of freshman year was just yesterday. I’m sure that the upperclassman and second semester seniors are also shocked at how fast time has gone as they start their college journey. Orientation and the fall school year seem just like yesterday, but in reality we’re already so close to being done with this year. In interviews with Mr.Trotter and with senior Andrew Quirk they respond to the following questions: Andrew Quirk: Do you think the school year has gone by quickly? Why or
Why not? “The school year is going by really slowly for me because I’ve had senioritis since sophomore year, so the semesters have just been dragging along.” Can you believe that you’re already a second semester senior? “It’s hard to believe I’m a second semester senior already. It seems like just yesterday I was on the retreat at freshman orientation.” What is one of your favorite high school memory? “I’m happy with it so far because I’ve done a lot more things, like hanging out with friends and stuff like that, but also a lot less of things, like homework.” Are you happy with
this school year? Why or why not? “I have several favorite memories, but some of the best dealt with teachers. Playing dumb in classes, like asking teachers what “freaking” is after every announcement about dance and then asking them to demonstrate it. This year, we were playing zoo with a handful of people in the middle of Spanish while the class is “popcorn” reading aloud, and Michael Balce gets caught in the middle of a motion involving a bird flapping its wings, and then I got in trouble for the whole thing. Great times.” Mr. Trotter: Do you think the school year has gone by quickly? Why or why not? “Yes I think the school
year has gone by fast because I try to black out most of my memory of it, I have selective amnesia.” Does teaching ever get repetitive and make the year slower, or does it make the school year go by faster? “Well yeah, [the] subject matter gets repetitive, but the fresh new audiences each year make the material more interesting and new.” What do you like best about teaching? “Summer break.” Are you happy with this school year? Why or why not? “I love this school year; to be honest, I love every year here at SMCHS. I feel so blessed to be able to teach here, and I love my job.”
Santa Margarita..Here’s the Key to Choosing Future Classes! By Alex Monda High school is an important four years for every teenager. Besides being a time for having fun with your friends, it will be a deciding factor in where you go to college and what you may do with the rest of your life. Scheduling for next year is already going on, and choosing good classes is an important thing to understand. SMCHS requires that you take 4 years of religion and English, 3 years social studies, science, and math, 2 years of a world language, and 1 year of fine art. That is the bare minimum that the school requires, but it is encouraged to take more.
Looking toward college applications, it’s important to look at what college you might want to go to early so you can be sure to meet their requirements. College websites have a lot of information for applicants, and getting an idea of what your dream college wants will help better your chances. The earlier you start thinking about college the better. Electives are another thing that needs to be taken into consideration. Take an elective that interests you, because it may help later on. If you think you might want to be a journalist, journalism would be a good elective. If you’re
interested in art, then AP art history might interest you. So consider you electives based on what you want to do. Colleges want to see that you can challenge yourself, too. If you got an A in an academic class and decided to stick with academic the next year, you might not be challenging yourself enough. The more honors classes you take and do well in, the better your transcript will look to colleges. But sophomore year you will be able to make the decision to do either IB or AP or to continue with academic classes. I asked counselors Ms. Flynn and Mr. Jondle to
12
share their opinions on choosing classes. When asked whether a B in an Honors class was better than an A in an academic class, Mr. Jondle responded that an A in an honors class is really what the top tier schools want to see. He says that for the majority of 4-year universities in the country, most accept our regular college preparatory classes as difficult classes on their own. But he said that the more difficult schools like the Ivy Leagues would rather see A’s in honors, AP, or IB. Ms. Flynn told me the best advice she can give would be to “choose your electives based on what you like and what you want to
learn.” She said it’s the only class you actually get a choice about and you should pick one that interests you. Overall though SMCHS will do a good job of preparing us for college no matter what classes we choose.

You Have a Text Message! By Alisha Maline Texting and driving. We all do it. I would be lying myself if I said I didn’t; however, when it comes to road safety, a cell phone is a very hazardous. Texting on the road takes one’s eyes, mind, and hands off of what he or she should be focusing on. Texting while driving does not seem to be a big deal, but think of it this way… If you were going 70 miles per hour on the freeway and took your eyes of the road for only FOUR seconds, you would drive about 250 yards. That is two and a half football fields you guys! This dangerous choice people choose make every day affects their visual, cognitive,
and manual mindset. In 2009, texting while driving was the cause of over 448,000 car crashes, according to The Official US Government Website of Distracted Driving, and 5,474 people were killed. But what is texting and driving compared to being above the legal alcohol limit or even under the influence of marijuana? The reaction time slowed by 12% for those who were above the alcohol limit, 21% for those under the influence of marijuana, and 35% for those who were either writing or reading a text message. (Breitbart News). This is, clearly, a very serious action, having thousands of people being put into a life-threatening situation. Although these
statistics may seem a little bizarre, taking your eyes off the road is extremely dangerous and anything can happen within the four to five seconds you are looking down at your phone, such as someone slamming on their brakes in front of you, someone switching into your lane, or even having the chance of you accidently veering off into another lane. All of these are examples of what could cause a fatal crash. Not only can you put your own life in danger, but the lives of those who are driving around you, as well. There are many ways to prevent these thousands of deaths that occur every year. All we have to do, as a community, is put those iPhones and Blackberrys

Season Ten! American Idol
By Mackenzie Leveque
It’s that time of the year again! The tenth season of American Idol has officially begun! It started and has made some changes. I’ve been watching American Idol since fourth grade, but for those of you who have not been following the show, I will give some background. The original judges of American Idol were Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and Randy Jackson. Paula left the show two seasons ago. While she was a kind and likeable judge, her loopy comments on performances made it clear that it was time for her to go. Simon, on the other hand, left the show after last season. This was a very disappointing
departure for many fans. His sarcastic humor and blunt honesty made him the favorite of millions of viewers. Randy was always the neutral judge, somewhere in between Paula’s kindness and Simon’s harsher judging. Randy has stayed with us through all the seasons and has come back for more this season. When Paula left, her spot was filled with not one, but two, judges: Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres. Kara, a successful songwriter who has written songs for many stars, knows her music, but wasn’t very likeable. And, whether you are a fan of Ellen or not, you will have to admit that she has zero musical background. Because of this, she had little
constructive feedback for the contestants of season nine. Neither judge returned this season.
At the judges table this season are Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler, and Jennifer Lopez. This promising trio has made American Idol much better than we have seen in the past few seasons. Steven Tyler, from the band Aerosmith, has a lot of credibility in his own successful career and will be able to give great feedback. Impressing Steven won’t be easy; he says that if he doesn’t like a performance, “I’d say, ‘You didn’t bring it. You didn’t bring what we need to see.’ If I didn’t see it, the attitude, you need to bring the
13
whole thing. You’ve got to have the voice, you gotta have what it’s all about.” His tough criticisms extended to the auditions, where he asked one American Idol hopeful if he “ate paint chips as a child”. He brings with him a crazy sense of humor and a slightly creepy approach to some of the female contestants. However, he is kind to contestants that actually care, telling Randy to “never tell anyone that they’re not good”. For better or for worse, he will definitely make the season more interesting and have some solid criticisms for the contestants. Jennifer Lopez, the other new judge of the season, seems to be taking Paula’s spot
as the “nice judge” who has a hard time saying no. So far, she herself has been the “American Idol” to many of the contestants, some of whom cried upon seeing her. Randy Jackson seems to have taken over Simon’s spot as the “harsh” judge. He is the same old Randy, but with less patience. The show needed a “mean judge” and Randy naturally stepped into that role. So far, this season seems to be off to an amazing start! I am so excited to see how the season unfolds. The new days for the show are Wednesday and Thursday, (both starting at eight o’clock). Tune in to see Season Ten of American Idol!

By Kendall Perrin What does Saint Patrick’s Day mean to you? Perhaps it’s an excuse to wear a green t-shirt with the words ‘kiss me, I’m Irish’ painted across the front. Or maybe it’s an reason to go from class to class, inflicting pain in the form of festive pinches on fellow classmates who forgot to wear the color green. Well if this is what you think the meaning behind Saint Patrick’s Day is, you and your friends are sorely mistaken. The 17th of March is a day commemorating Saint Patrick’s work in Ireland, converting pagans to Christianity and teaching humility and forgiveness.
a bishop and sent to Ireland to spread the ways of Christianity. Here he began preaching the gospel where his message was widely heard. Because of Saint Patrick and his many disciples, Ireland became a Christian nation, with thousands of churches scattered across the land. For over 30 years, Saint Patrick devoted his life to spreading the word of God. He also preformed miracles, and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. Sadly, on March 17thAD 461, Saint Patrick passed away. Hundreds of years later, his legacy lives on in the form of Saint Patrick’s Day.
What is Saint Patrick’s Really About? No one is quite sure where Saint Patrick grew up. As a boy, he was stolen from his family and shipped to Ireland to be sold into slavery. During his captivity in the once pagan land, Patrick turned to God for guidance. His prayers were answered in the form of a dream, in which God told Patrick to escape from Ireland and return to his family. Shortly after arriving home, Patrick had another dream in which the people of Ireland cried out to him, “We beg you, holy youth, to come and walk among us once more.” Patrick began his studies in priesthood and was later ordained

Ms. Diorio- Reexamining my life while mindful of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Mrs. Talbot- By the time it is Easter, I love the feeling of the accomplishment I made over the past 40 days. It excites me to know that through my works I have gained a better relationship with God. When I think of Jesus and His glory, I feel that He will rejoice in me if I can continue my Lenten
promise. Mrs. Shaffer- Ash Wednesday is a beacon of where I stand with my relationship of Christ and how I can better my relationship with Him. Ash Wednesday is a day for us to prepare ourselves for the most important time in our religious faith. It is important for all of us reflect on our mistakes and act to better ourselves as followers of God.
40 Days and 40 Nights
By Megan Alders Lent is a time that comes once a year. It starts Ash Wednesday and ends Easter Sunday. For those who believe in Jesus Christ, Lent is a very sacred time. During the season of lent, you are to give up something you enjoy and each time you feel the need for that one thing, it is a reminder of Jesus sacrifice he made on the cross for us. For example, if I give up chocolate, every time I crave a candy bar, I stop and think about what Jesus did for us, pray and take time to think about him instead of kicking back and eating my candy. Lent should not be used as a time to have a contest with friends or play a challenge with your family. Lent symbolizes the 40 days Jesus went without food or water in the desert. Lent is a time
to become more like Jesus think about his sacrifice during Lent. So what are SM students giving up for lent? I asked a few students what they are giving up and why. Sophomore Matt Murphy says, “I’m giving up chocolate because I can’t live without it.” Well that is a risky move for matt. John Rastoka says, “Girl Scout Cookies, they’re probably the greatest thing ever made”. True, Girl Scout Cookies are the greatest thing ever made. Can John really give them up for 40 days? Bryce Zeimer says, “Probably soda and candy because it is way too much sugar”. Everyone should start to think about what they are giving up for lent as a reminder to themselves that Jesus made the biggest sacrifice of all and died for our sins.

Fist Pumping Spreads to Italy!
By: Alyssa Collica Jersey Shore is the TV show that everyone has been talking about for the past three years. In just three seasons the ratings have gone up tremendously. In the first season there was an average of 1.375 million viewers. In the third season, there are currently 8.45 million viewers who watch the show weekly. The Situation, Ronnie, Pauly D, Vinny, JWoww, Snooki, Sammi, Angelina, who left last season, and the recently added Deena, have always kept Jersey Shore exciting and interesting to watch. Jersey Shore has been filled with drama from the beginning.
There are many phrases that the Jersey house uses daily. GTL is a common phrase that you hear often. Gym, tan, and laundry are what these people do on a daily basis. Another phrase that you hear often is DTS which means down to snuggle. MVP is an abbreviation that stands for the trio of Mike, Vinny, and Pauly. You will often hear the girls of Jersey use the term “Guido.” A guido is a heavy tanning, labor intensive man. The term busted in Jersey Shore is used to describe an unattractive female. A grenade is an overweight unattractive girl and a landmine is a skinny unattractive female. In season one,
right after the Situation and Sammi got together, Ronnie came in and stole her. Ever since then they have been on and off. There was crazy drama when 4’9” Snooki got punched in the face by a man. But everyone came together to support her. Angelina caused a lot of drama and nobody really liked her. She caused problems between everyone and always got in the way of everything. She left during Jersey and nobody knew if she would show up in Miami for season two. At the end of season one Ronnie and Sammi were not together. The next summer, the cast of Jersey Shore went to Miami. Ronnie and Sammi were still not together and it was awkward for everyone in the house. And, to everyone’s surprise, Angelina was back and no one really knew why. At the beginning of Miami, single Ronnie went out at clubs and got crazy while Sammi
The Real World
was at the house. That same night he went home and got back with Sammi. Snooki and Jenni thought it would be a good idea to send Sammi an anonymous letter telling her everything Ronnie had been doing. When the word got out about the letter, Ronnie got upset and when no one admitted to writing it, drama came. Angelina and Sammi were then civil and Angelina tells Sammi who wrote it. This causes Sammi to hate JWoww and Snooki. After a night at the club Angelina got into a fight with Pauly D and the Situation. Once Angelina lost her only two real friends in the house she decided to go home. At the end of season two only seven people remained and no one was really on good terms. But Sammi and Ronnie were still together at the end of Miami. On the current season, the Jersey Shore cast is back in New Jersey. Ronnie and Sammi are still
together, and Angelina is no where to be seen. Snooki brought her “twin meatball” Deena on the show, who is also 4’9”. On the first day back in Jersey there was already drama between Deena, Sammi and Ronnie. Sammi and Ronnie have been fighting consistently ,and their fights have gotten abusive. Ronnie threw Sammi’s suitcase outside the window and broke all of her things. When things got this bad, Sammi knew it was time to leave. Once Sammi left, Ronnie knew he had made a mistake by letting her leave. When she returned, it was a huge shock in the house, and now Ronnie and Sammi are friends which changes the mood in the house. No one knows which relationships will form or end but hopefully everyone is civil before the next season. Season four is supposed to be held in Italy! Will the Jersey Shore cast stay together for Italy, or will their family break up for good?

Its back! The show that we all follow and love, The Real World. Last season, in the Real World: New Orleans, we saw relationships form and drama unfold. This show puts 7 strangers together in one house and purposely chooses people with all different beliefs and backgrounds. This will cause the people in the house to disagree and clash in different situations. The cast included Ashlee, from New Jersey, Eric, from Virginia, Jemmye, from
Mississippi, McKenzie from Florida, Preston, from Massachusetts, Ryan Knight from Wisconsin, Ryan, from Arizona, and Sahar from Michigan. Each of these cast mates have many different interests. We not only saw drama, but we saw friendships and relationships form. MTV is doing it again this year with The Real World Las Vegas. Like New Orleans, we will be seeing relationships, friendships, fights and more drama. To prepare the audience, MTV, has been showing clips of
what the new season will bring. We can expect many fights and disagreements from the cast. The season premiered Wednesday, March 9, 2011, at 10:00 p.m. In the first episode, each roommate was paired up with another. The roommates made their way to The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, where they will be living for the next couple of months. After the roommates got to their new home, they began to get to know each other. According to chief executive officer Joseph Magliarditi,
