What does it mean to combine like terms?
1. How do I simplify an expression with more than one variable?
Vocabulary Like terms – Terms that have the exact same variable(s) raised to the same power Combine like terms – The process of adding or subtracting like terms together. Simplify – The process of combining like terms until it is in the simplest form. Simplify each expression Example 1 (I’ve already used the shape method for this particular problem!) :
Example 2:
2x + 3y
Example 4: 3a + 2ab - 7 + 5b +2a - 6b – 6ab + 3
Example 3:
3x + 1 - x + 2
***NOTE*** “ab” is different from just “a” or “b” by itself. It is in fact a combination of the two, which means it can only be added to OTHER combinations of the two!
