You can find these materials at department stores, craft shops and haberdasheries. Preparation Separate your thread - Embroidery thread is made up of six strands that are twisted together and easy to separate. Like most cross stitch patterns, our pattern is stitched on 14-count aida and only requires two strands, so you will need to separate your thread. Prepare your fabric - To know where to begin a cross stitch design, it is helpful to find the centre of your aida. Fold your aida in half and then in half again, where the two folds cross is the middle point. Following the pattern The squares on the pattern correspond to the squares on the fabric. Every square on the pattern that requires a stitch will contain a symbol. It is easiest to start stitching from the centre of the design. Stitch for Syria Start stitching by pulling the threaded needle up onto the front side of the fabric, leaving a small amount of thread on the back. Hold this thread against the back of the fabric in the direction you plan to stitch and work the first four or five stitches over it to secure it into place. Stitch an entire row going one way, and then return completing the crosses. To end a thread, run your threaded needle under the last few stitches on the back of the aida, then cut off the end of the thread. Cross stitch is usually worked in horizontal rows from left to right. Take your time, count carefully and enjoy!
