Board Meets New School Resource Officer Anahuac ISD Superintendent James Hopper introduced Rick Davis, the new School Resource Officer (SRO) during the December 10 board meeting. The AISD board previously approved having law enforcement on campus. Officer Davis will fill a variety of roles, including providing additional security and also as a teaching tool within the district. Officer Davis will work throughout the calendar year possibly offering summer programs to students. Chambers County hired Officer Davis and will pay the expenses. He will begin work at AISD after a four-month retraining period at a police academy in Houston. “This is a unique relationship and I’m very excited about it,” said Supt. Hopper. “I appreciate the opportunity having an SRO gives AISD,” he added. Supt. Hopper also said that the district will be going over its polices and procedures to make sure they “mesh” with those of the Chambers County
Sheriff's Department. Kudos to Students In other matters, the board honored several students for various accomplishments. The Girls’ Cross Country team were recognized as District Champions. Members of the Varsity Volleyball team were named to All-District. (article on Page 8.) Members of the Varsity Football team were named to All-District (article on Page 6.) FFA Team Makes AISD History at State Three Anahuac FFA teams competed December 5 and 6 in Huntsville, going farther than other AISD teams have in the past. “We are proud to announce that our three state qualifying LDE teams had a great contest in Huntsville,” said Anahuac FFA Advisor Kaleigh Burnett. “The frigid cold and winter weather did not stop us from achieving our goals. Months, weeks, and hundreds of hours of long days, early morning practices, late nights, many miles; blood, sweat, and tears were all in preparation for this contest, and the coveted felt banners that we were determined to bring home!” Out of 216 teams in the state, Anahuac High School’s Agricultural Advocacy team of Ali Kontominas, Mason Duhon, Traci Alexander and Justin Haley were in the top twenty. “Their historic finish as the first ever state semi finalists; representing Anahuac FFA, the Ricebelt District, and the Area IX Association, will forever be chronicled as this contest rises in popularity and participation in the future,” said Ms. Burnett. “While we did not advance to the top ten finalists, we are already looking forward to a promising run next year.” Out of 252 Jr. FFA skills teams in the state; the AHS team of Madelyne Nauman, Taylor Hankamer and Zachary Rose were 9th in the state. “This is the best a Jr. Team from Anahuac has ever fared at the state level. We are incredibly proud of them, and have high hopes for the next three years of their FFA career,” said Burnett. Last but not least is Anahuac FFA’s senior team. There were 258 Senior FFA Skills teams in the state — the team of Madison Mitchell, Blake Edwards, and Austin Nauman finished third in the state. “This top three finish marks a historic placing as it is the best an Anahuac LDE team has ever finished; a perfect end to three years of hard work and dedication from these three individuals,” said Burnett.

AISD Board Meeting (continued from Page 2) the maximum amount of tuition as allowed by law. The revision states that the district will set the tuition rate. Mr. Hopper suggested that the rate be set annually. The board revised the purchasing and acquisitions policy to require board approval for purchases above $25,000. The policy was increased to an allowa-
ble amount of $50,000 during the bond projects. Mr. Hopper reported on the Disciplinary Education Alternative Program in Liberty. He said that due to a reduction in schools participating, the program will need to nearly double its rates to the schools still enrolled in the program. He added that other options were
beginning to be discussed, but that there was nothing definite yet. Anahuac Middle School Principal Patti Nauman gave a presentation on Anahuac ISD curriculum. She also spoke about changes to state assessments and how it will affect the district’s curriculum.

Students Create Christmas Cheer The Anahuac Elementary campus contributed to the holiday cheer by creating cards to send to U. S. troops stationed across the nation and overseas. Through the American Red Cross, the cards will be delivered worldwide to spread holiday cheer and support for those protecting America’s freedoms. The activity was completed with multi-grade levels participating. Peggy Hill’s first grade class, and Lakeshia Humphrey’s second
grade class contributed to the art work and design of the exterior of the card. Fifth grade students designed and completed the interior of the card with warm wishes and safe returns for the troops. “The students had a great time and hope to send many more cards of care to our troops throughout the school year!” said spokesperson Janet Henicke.

phase of their high altitude/White Sands rocket. The AHS students had the opportunity to meet and discuss their project with students from the five other Texas schools who are attempting this project. While at JSC, the students were treated to tours of the historic Mission Control, ISS control and shuttle mission control. The students toured the Shuttle Avionics Integration Lab and were able to go to the simulation lab. In the simulation lab, they piloted the Orion capsule around the International Space Station (ISS), drove the lunar rover on the moon and grabbed a satellite out of orbit with the robot arm on the ISS. The Anahuac Aerospace class is one of six in Texas and the United States that will attempt to build a free flight sounding rocket, with an altitude goal of 100,000 ft.

AES Works to Help Unlock A Cure For Cancer The campaign to Help Unlock A Cure For Cancer started from a small seed and blossomed into an annual event for Anahuac Elementary students. Seven years ago, teacher Deborah Baker learned that her close friend Beckie Campbell Church had been diagnosed with breast cancer. After treatment and close monitoring, Beckie is now cancer-free. Throughout the treatment process, Deborah learned more and more about the disease and the health issues that can be devastating. One statement she heard often was ‘Early detection can be the single most effective assistance’ in treating breast cancer. Deborah said that is when she had her Oprah Winfrey “A-ha moment”! Anahuac Elementary School now works during the entire month of October, which happens to be Breast Cancer Awareness Month, to raise money for the worthy cause. Each year has a theme and this year, students, family, and faculty had the opportunity to purchase a key for twenty-five cents to be signed and then displayed on the wall at the AES Cafeteria.
Each year, AES sets a goal and this year, it aimed to pay for five mammograms. The goal was set and then it was discovered that the fee had risen to $150 per x-ray. Never a group to be held back, those involved worked hard and raised 2,662 quarters ($665.50) and a faculty member generously donated another $84.50 to total the $750 needed. The funds were sent to The Rose, a non-profit breast cancer organization, and will provide five mammograms for Chambers County residents. “I thank all of the students and faculty who worked for this goal,” said Ms Baker. “I would like to extend a special thank you to Sarah Golleher for her assistance in keeping this program on track with her hard work and extra effort. Just knowing how many lives are affected by cancer, including faculty members who are like our second family, it feels great to know we are encouraging pro-active behavior to help save lives,” Ms. Baker added.
Pictured at left are AES individuals who have dealt with Breast Cancer in one way or another. Also pictured is the woman who inspired this annual event, Beckie Church, and her family.
