The Leader in Me Paradigm Shifts: Habit 6 Habit 6: Synergize: This month we will focus on synergy/the barriers to synergy. Explain to the students that we need to value and celebrate our differences. It is important to always appreciate diverse perspectives while we are practicing creative cooperation!
Week 2 (April 13-17): Chalk Talk: Begin the month with a chalk talk. You will need four different pieces of poster paper that state the following questions: 1. We are all different and unique. Why is this a good thing when it comes to synergizing? 2. What pluses do you have when you work as a team? 3. What deltas do you have when you work as a team? 4. How can we move our deltas to the plus side when we work as a team? *You can print these questions by clicking HERE. *Watch the clip from Wall-E by clicking HERE. Complete a verbal See, Think, Wonder routine to discuss your students’ thoughts. You can also watch the Little Boxes clip by clicking HERE. *Discuss the results and talk about what it would be like if everyone had the same personality, looks, talents, and interests.
The Little Red Hen-Turn and Talk: Watch the story, The Little Red Hen and complete a verbal circle of viewpoints on the story. Click HERE to watch the story online. What would it feel like to be the Little Red Hen? What would it feel like to be her friends? (pig, cat, duck) If you could explain what synergy is to the pig, the cat, and the duck, what would you say? What could they have done differently in order to synergize in the story? Week 3 (April 20-24): Creative Cooperation: *Read the story, Teamwork is not my thing and I don’t like to share aloud to the class. Beach Ball Activity: Have the students stand in a circle and place a ball in the center of the circle. Explain to the children that: 1. They need to work as a team 2. They need to all touch the ball as quickly as possible *During this activity, the children will learn to synergize and change their plan. After they work together to change their plan a few times, gather the students at the carpet and discuss what happened. What did you do at first? How/why did your plan change? Week 4 (April 27-May 1st): Creative Cooperation Continued: *Read the story, The Day the Crayons Quit by clicking HERE. Storybook Drawing Activity: YOU WILL NEED TO DOWNLOAD THE BRUSHES APP. FOR THIS LESSON. *Divide your students into groups of 5. Each group will need one ipad and one storybook drawing activity card for this lesson. You can find the Storybook Drawing Activity cards by clicking HERE. The first student in the group will draw ONE thing on the
ipad that has to do with their card topic. Then when they are done, they will pass the ipad along to another group member who will do the same thing. When everyone has had the chance to draw something in the picture, the students will look at their creation and come up with a story for the drawing. (Upper El-You can find the storybook drawing paper by clicking HERE.)
