The Leader in Me Paradigm Shifts: Habit 5 Habit 5: Seek First to Understand then be Understood This month we will focus on understanding one another using good listening skills. Explain to students that when we listen we use our whole body. Click HERE to see attached papers on “Whole Body Listening/Being an Understanding Listener.” Week 1: Claim/Evidence Stand In My Shoes (March 2-6th) • Using the book, How Do I Stand In Your Shoes Students will hear the first part of the story using the slides provided via Smart Notebook (click on the title for link). For the first part of the activity you will need to stop at page 9. At the stopping point in the story students will use the Claim/Evidence sheet (you will want two copies for each child for this lesson, unless you plan to do the second portion as a whole group) that you have been using to conduct your science claims to make a claim about the story and provide evidence to support their claim. • Resume the story. • Following the completion of the story students will complete the second claim evidence to support the change in the story.
Week 2:Generate, Sort, Connect Understanding being a good listener (March 9-13) • Using the attached documents, have your class identify the qualities of being a good listener. What does a good listener look like? Generate what that looks and sounds like then sort them to match the body parts that would relate to that listening skill. Connect the ideas of how the listening skills could be related to the skills of being a good listener and how that might be helpful in their future conversations/communication. • Watch the video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs3PK6JBsTU
• Talk about how being a good listener is making a deposit in
the speaker’s emotional bank account.
Week 3: Turn and Talk (March 16-20): Click HERE to find a list of emotions/feelings. Pair the students up with their turn and talk partners, and have one child speak at a time. The first child will pick an emotion and describe a time when they felt that specific emotion and why. Their partner will listen to their story and then repeat what they heard. Then the other partner gets a turn. Work on your specific activity for Leadership Day Have student/teacher/classroom mission statements clearly posted or visible Pull out any activities that you may have saved inside of your classroom to display

▪ Raise your hand in the cafeteria if you need to
get up. ▪ Walk quietly in the hallway to lunch and recess.
