WEATHER
Observable changes in weather can be recorded on weather maps and used to predict patterns of change.
Weather is studied by meteorologists (this is called meteorology). Meteorologists use past weather patterns and weather station data to predict weather.
Weather forecasts are continually changing to reflect the current weather conditions collected from weather stations.
Some of the Weather Instruments used to collect data: o Thermometer – for measuring temperature in degrees Celsius o Wind vane – for measuring wind direction o Rain gauge – for measuring precipitation in centimeters and inches o Anemometer – for measuring wind speed in miles per hour or kilometer per hour Students will look at maps to predict how the weather will move based on previous patterns. We have practiced this in class.
High wind speeds cool the air temperature. Students will look at a weather map of the United States and make predictions about weather. Symbols to know:
Sunny
Overcast
cold front
Rainy / Precipitation
warm front
WATER CYCLE Water continuously moves above and on the Earth’s surface through the water cycle. The Sun is the major source of energy for the water cycle. When accumulation of water on the Earth’s surface (lakes, ponds, streams) is heated by the Sun, it turns to vapor in the air (evaporation). This air is cooled and forms water drops in a cloud (condensation). Fog is condensation near the ground.
The Sun’s energy causes changes on Earth like: o Water is evaporated by the sun. o Air, heated by the sun, begins to move and causes wind. o Plants make food which helps them grow. Students must know the definitions to the parts of the water cycle (these can be found in their lab book – PAGE _____)
PATTERNS: Seasons, Moon, Tides Changes in the seasons cause changes in the weather. The change of the pattern of the seasons is due to the tilt of the Earth on its axis and the path of the orbit around the sun.
Summers in most parts of the world are hot, because the Sun’s rays hit Earth more directly during that season (due to the tilt of the Earth).
Weather is a system on Earth that has cycles that occur over and over again. The moon cycle repeats its pattern about every month (29 days). We can see the moon because it reflects light from the sun as it orbits Earth in a counter clockwise rotation.
Know the difference between high tide and low tide. See the picture representation in your lab book.
Shadows are cast due to the position of the sun in the sky. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, causing shadows in the opposite direction.
