This test covers the first half of Unit 1, important vocabulary, and labeling parts of a triple beam balance. It should help us prepare for the bigger end of unit CSCOPE test. Test format: Balance diagram & changes in states of matter (fill in the blank) Applying knowledge of Physical Properties of Matter (cScope type questions – multiple choice)
Unit 1 CSCOPE Test is tentatively set for September 23.
States of Matter: solid, liquid, gas o Solid – a state of matter that has a fixed shape and volume; atoms in a solid are packed closely together o Liquid – a state of matter that can change shape, but has a fixed volume; atoms in a liquid are close together, but they slide around o Gas – a state of matter that changes shape and volume; atoms in a gas are spread out and move freely o To change from one state to another, heat energy has to be added or removed.
Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space Mass: the amount of material in an object and is measured with a balance Volume: the amount of space taken up by an object Matter has physical properties that can help distinguish / classify one kind of matter from another. Some physical properties of matter are color, shape, texture, size, mass, volume, temperature, magnetism, state of matter, and ability to sink/float Some physical properties may be observed without tools other than our senses, but others require us to measure using tools: o Temperature – thermometer (degrees Celsius) o Volume – graduated cylinder (mL) o Mass – balance (grams) o Size / measurement – metric ruler (cm) Label parts of a Triple Beam Balance pan weights
