Welcome to Canyons Vir tual High School! Canyons Virtual High School (CVHS) provides personalized, flexible, and engaging online learning opportunities to help students throughout Utah succeed and prepare for college and career. Students may take up to six full credits of online courses as part of their complete high school schedule. Courses offered through CVHS provide
students the power to personalize learning with curriculum aligned to Utah State and Common Core Standards, and are built following instructional design best practices that incorporate video, interactive activities, immediate feedback, and assessments to ensure mastery and authentic work.
CVHS Beliefs About Online Lear ning We believe the online learning experience should: - provide an avenue for students to recover missed instruction or accelerate their learning with a comprehensive catalog of courses. - personalize learning which allows for students to progress at their own pace anywhere and anytime with the support of highly qualified teachers. - contain high-caliber curriculum aligned to state standards and district pacing guides. - be engaging, intuitive, and easy to use. - enable students with an opportunity to demonstrate integrity in course work.
What to Expect When Taking an Online Class
Be Self Disciplined Many students believe that since the courses are online it means they are easier, and as a result underestimate how much time it will take to complete their courses. CVHS courses follow the Canyons School District's curriculum maps and scope and sequence, meaning our courses contain the same amount of content as a course you would take in a regular Canyons School District high school. It is up to you to set aside time each day and week to dedicate to your CVHS course(s). Find time to read, watch and study the tutorials in each of your CVHS courses. It's up to you to avoid distractions.
Be Self Motivated CVHS courses require you to work independently. While our
CVHS teachers check-in with you periodically, they will not see you daily to make sure you are keeping up with your work. Communicate with your teachers. If you have questions or concerns about a course, your teachers are happy to talk about them with you.
Be Responsible You are responsible for your learning. It is your responsibility to work with your school counselor to ensure that you are registering and completing courses that are appropriate for your graduation pathway.
Know Contact I nfor mation Make sure you know who you can contact if you have questions or concerns. Your CVHS teachers and the CVHS office staff are here to help and support you. The CVHS website, your CVHS courses, and this handbook provide contact information you may need access to.
Be Academically Honest CVHS expects its students to follow the CVHS Student Code of Conduct, Academic, and CSD Acceptable Use policies. You are expected to complete and submit your own work, and provide appropriate citations when necessary. All CVHS teachers are currently Canyons School District teachers who know how to identify plagiarism.

What Do I Do if I have an I EP or 504 Plan? CVHS understands that some students come to CVHS with IEP and 504 plans. The CVHS registration site provides students an opportunity to let CVHS know whether or not they have an IEP or 504 plan. Once a student has registered with CVHS and indicates that he/she has an IEP or 504 plan, the CVHS office verifies the accommodations set within those plans with a representative at that student's school. Based on the accommodations needed, CVHS will provide that information to the student's teacher(s). Due to the nature of online courses, many accommodations listed on student IEP and 504 plans naturally happen, or don't specifically apply to CVHS courses. The next two pages in this handbook provides an "At a Glance View" of various accommodations and how CVHS teachers and staff can help provide those accommodations to CVHS students. NOTE - the accommodations shared are examples of the various accommodations that appear on different IEP and 504 plans. These accommodations have been established by the school's teachers, parents, students, and principals. If you have any questions about the accommodations as stated on your IEP or 504 plan talk with your school's representative. CVHS will provide the accommodations described on the official IEP and 504 plan.

Students have until by May 31, 2018 to complete courses Checking completeness Extended response time Adjusting grouping Extended time on assignments Instructions/directions repeated Special seating Out of level testing Small group setting Can use phone to take pictures of notes on whiteboard Mat use a computer/laptop in class Flexible learning Create an organized plan to help students remember due dates Teacher will provide lecture notes
These types of accommodations occur naturally in CVHS courses. CVHS courses have been designed for students to complete at their own pace, and students may choose where to complete their course content. -
Minimized distractions Small group setting Paraphrasing Reading test aloud Alternate location for testing Minimize distractions Breaks Extended time on tests
All course pretests, finals, and test out exams must be completed in a proctored (supervised) setting, and these accommodations would apply to a proctored test. CVHS has designated testing times and labs that can be found on the CVHS website. The testing labs are open to all CVHS students which makes it difficult for our proctors to know which students get accommodations and which ones don't. Students who have these types of accommodations should set up an appointment with the CVHS office to ensure they get the accommodations they need.
- Copy of notes - Use of calculator - May retake tests CVHS policy states that students may use one-page of notes on proctored finals (except Driver 's Ed), but there are some stipulations. The notes must be handwritten, appear on one side of a page no larger than 8 1/2 x 11. Students must show their notes to the teacher proctoring the test, and turn in the notes before leaving the testing environment. If your IEP/504 plan states something specific about notes, contact the CVHS office to schedule an appointment to take your test. This way they can ensure that this accommodation is provided. Calculators may be used on course pretests, finals, and test out exams. Prior to starting a test, students must show the calculator to the teacher proctoring the test. If you do not have a calculator, contact the CVHS office and they can provide one for you to use for the test. Students may retake any course quizzes and finals, and the highest score will be kept. The only tests that may not be retaken are pretests and test out exams. Those may only be take once every school year.
-
When possible, reduce work to show mastery Continual prompts and reminders from the teacher Additional support Check for completeness
The CVHS courses are taught by highly qualified Canyons School District teachers. The CVHS office will let teachers know that your IEP/504 plan states these types of accommodations, but don't be afraid to communicate with your teacher(s) directly.
Academic Policies
Academic I ntegr ity Policy CVHS students are expected to complete all CVHS course work with "academic integrity". Academic integrity focuses on honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. Students should complete all coursework in a manner that embodies these values and promotes hard work and honest effort. A violation of the CVHS academic integrity policy is considered academic misconduct. Academic misconduct includes: - Completing coursework for another person. - Allowing coursework to be completed by another person. - Plagiarizing coursework from another person and submitting as own work. - Using the Internet to search for quiz & test answers.
- Maliciously submitting incomplete work. Academic misconduct falsifies your understandings and undermines an ability to determine how well you're doing in the course. Such misconduct may result in a lower course grade, expulsion from the course and the possibility of disqualifications of future CVHS course enrollments.
Student Code of Conduct As stated by the Utah State Board of Education, "Students are encouraged to engage in the highest standards of civil and ethical behavior on school grounds, during school sponsored activities, and in school-related communications and interactions." CVHS students are expected to follow the CSD Student Conduct and Discipline Policy as outlined h er e. In addition, CVHS students are expected to: - Complete all coursework in a manner that embodies the CVHS Academic Integrity Policy prompting hard work and honest effort. - Conduct themselves in a manner that contributes to a productive learning atmosphere for themselves and their classmates. - Participate in course discussions and other required course activities. - Use various technology and software appropriately as outlined by the Canyons School District's Acceptable Use Policy.
Minimum Time Policy CVHS courses are designed to be taken asynchronously, independent of set schedules and traditional due dates. Nevertheless, because all courses require regular interaction between the student and the teacher for the purposes of teaching, evaluating and providing assistance, the minimum time frame for course completions five school days following the course start date.
Repeat Course Policy In accordance with the Canyons School District Guidelines, if a student wishes to re-take a course, either to enhance personal learning or to earn a better grade, the student may do so by taking the entire course (1.0 credit) or a portion thereof (.25 - .75) from CVHS. The student will receive a letter grade for this repeated class. The letter grade earned for this repeated class, as well as the grade earned for the initial class, will be included in computing the student's official overall grade point average (GPA) and both courses and grade postings will be listed on the student's transcript.
Attendance Policy Attendance is measured using login time-stamps from within GradPoint and/or Canvas. All CVHS students must log in to one of their CVHS courses at least once every 10 days or they will be counted as absent and course access will be deactivated, and students will be unenrolled from the course. When a student is unenrolled from a course their work is not lost. To reactive a course, a student must submit a help ticket at h t t p:/ / cvh s.can yon sdist r ict .or g. The student will be put back in the course and can continue where he/she left off provided it is during the current school year.

Credit Options Three options for credit are available through Canyons Virtual High School. Or igin al Cr edit Cr edit Original Credit can be earned for courses taken the first time, or past courses repeated in order to improve a student's GPA. Students who complete an Original Credit course will receive a letter grade. Cr edit Recover y (M ake Up) Cr edit Credit Recovery Credit can be earned for successfully completing credit recovery courses, as long as students have previously taken an Original Credit version of the course. Students who pass a Credit Recovery course receive a Pass (P) on their transcript. Test -Ou t Cr edit Students may choose to test out of a course by taking the course final in a proctored setting. Students who pass a Test-Out course receive a Pass (P) on their transcript. These tests can only be taken once every school year.
I s There a Cost for CVHS Courses? The Statewide Online Education Program (SOEP) dictates that each year, all Utah students may replace up to six of their traditional, face-to-face course credits with six original course credits earned online. Although most requests for CVHS original credit will not incur fees, there are circumstances when fees for original credit apply. Students requesting make-up credit are assessed a $35 per credit registration fee. Th er e is n o cost if : - You are taking CVHS courses as part of your full-day enrollment to replace one of your daytime courses. - You are registered for an education release period during the day. - You are enrolled in a lab during the day to work on original credit coursework. - Your high school has a lab class period in which you are enrolled specifically for CVHS courses. - You have a fee waiver for your other school fees. Th er e is a f ee if : - You are taking courses for make-up credit. (Except if you are enrolled in a CVHS lab at your school) - You are taking courses to graduate early. - You are re-taking courses to improve your GPA. - You are taking courses during the summer.
How Long Can I Take To Finish a Course?
CVHS courses have been designed for students to complete in ten weeks. However, students are able to set and work at their own pace. All students are urged to complete their course(s) as soon as they're able, in order to receive full instructor support. Students who do not complete their CVHS course(s) by May 31, 2018 at 11:59 PM will have to re-register for the course and pay any necessary fees. Coursework will not be saved and students will be required to start the course over.
Progress Monitor ing CVHS uses Skyward to report how students are doing in their CVHS classes. This information will be updated on a monthly basis by the 5th of the month. Since students may continually make progress in online courses, keep in mind that scores as of the end of the month being reported. When students/guardians log in to Skyward, they will see two grades posted every month: % Complete and % Proficient. M on t h ly % Com plet e grades identify the overall percentage of the course that has been completed. For example, a progress grade for last month of 75% means that as of that date, the student has worked through 75% of the course content. M on t h ly % Pr of icien cy grades indicate how well the student has performed on course assignments and assessments. For example, a proficiency grade for last month of 80% means that as of that date, the student has earned 80% of the points possible on all assignments and assessments given up to that point in the course. Once a student has worked through all of the assignments and assessments in the course, a final grade will be posted on Skyward. In district students will not need a transcript from CVHS. All out of district students will receive a transcript on a monthly basis when courses have been completed. An asterisk (* ) assigned to any of the items indicates that the course is still in progress, and the grading for that month or term has not yet been completed.

Proctored Test Locations and Test I nfor mation Every pretest, test-out exam, and course final must be taken in a proctored (supervised) setting. Students may take proctored tests at any of the proctor locations specified for CVHS. The passing grade for all pretests, test-outs, and course finals is 60% (with the exception of Driver Education). Pretests and test-out exams may only be taken once each school year. Students who do not score 60% or better on a course final may retake that final as many times as needed in order to receive a passing score, but only twice in one sitting. Im por t an t In f or m at ion abou t Pr et est s - Pretests must be completed before viewing and/or completing any of the other modules with the CVHS course. - Notes are not allowed when taking a pretest.
