See the families, extended families, buildings , housing projects, people who sit and entertain themselves outside their buildings on summer days?
Do you want to see murals on the streets? They are of important figures in the history of the area - poets, artists, etc
Do you want to see gardens in the community? The gardens in this area have a cultural significance.
Do you want to go to an independent bookstore which is small, cute and sells books about latino culture? latino writers? cute crafts? gallery downstairs? it is really the only bookstore servicing the community and it is fairly new. There is a book club that meets there. There are cultural events that happen here as well.
Do you want to check out some music stores that sell latin music?
Do you want to go to a produce market and flea market that are being revitalized like other great nyc markets? Historically this was the place where the community shopped. In nice weather they do salsa dancing there on Saturdays. It is under the arches on Park AVenue. It is a neat place
Do you want to go see a pick up soccer game? They happen every weekend and evening. Many immigrant families go to play.
Do you want to visit a botanica and meet with the spiritual man who is the proprietor ? We can arrange to meet with him and have him talk about his work. Apparently it is a family business and has been passed down for generations. FYI he is on twitter
Do you want to meet with someone who can inform us about the real problem of gentrification that is effecting this neighborhood? Maybe we can arrange to walk with him a bit.
Do you want to meet with someone who can inform us of the health disparities that exist in this community as well as the high incidence of childhood asthma which occurs here?
Do you want to go to el Museo del Barrio and see LaBienal 2013? The museum specializes in Latin American and Caribbean Art. It is located at 5th Avenue and East 105th Street. There is a cafe and a gift shop.
Do you want to see the Dominican and Puerto Rican bakeries in the area? They are cool!
Do you want to hear about the changes in the immigrant communities here? It is interesting and probably political relevant. One 24 y/o I met who works in a cafe described it as "the past, and the future"
