Principally Speaking… CORNELL SPOTLIGHT/AUSD BOARD MEETING Coming up next week on Thursday, 9/24/15 We look forward to spotlighting Cornell at the Albany Board Meeting right here at Cornell at 7:30pm. We will plan to show a short video of happenings at school plus take a short walk of campus and tour a classroom. Come join us! We're proud of our school. GREAT TURN OUT AT BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT Thank you for coming and for being an active partner in your child’s education. The staff and I feel very supported and fortunate to work in this community of caring parents and great kids. The next formal meeting with your child’s teacher will be during the Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences, November 10th – 24th. These will be shortened days, so plan now for the schedule change: 8:30-‐1:45 for 1st-‐3rd; 8:30-‐1:40 for 4th and 5th. No change in the schedule for Kindergarten. DONUTS WITH DUNCAN 8:45am in the Multi-‐Use room on Wednesday, 10/21/15. THIS IS A CHANGE from original date of 9/23/15. In realizing we had scheduled during Yom Kippur, we’ve moved the event. Thank you for your understanding. This is a casual time to come meet with the Principal. Please plan to join us if it fits in your schedule.
JOIN US TO LEARN MORE ABOUT SBAC AND COMING REPORTS OUT TO PARENTS We hope you make it to our next PTA meeting on Thursday, October 1st. Our district Director of Curriculum & Instruction, Peter Parenti, will be joining us to share news and information about how parents can access and understand this important data. SAFETY FIRST This year there are a series of things Cornell will be focusing on to focus on safety at Cornell. To begin the year, staff is all participating in various trainings to support our collective knowledge base on procedures around health and prevention in support of safety for our students. Between now and end of October staff will participate in trainings in Bloodborne Pathogens, Mandated Reporting, Epi-‐Pen, and CPR. We are thankful to the district for providing these opportunities to us. I will continue sharing what we are working on throughout the year. SECOND STEP We begin our social-‐emotional curriculum Second Step with a look at skills for learning which are necessary for having empathy, managing emotions, and solving problems. "Listening to Learn" is the first lesson which is a fundamental skill for learning that helps children focus and pay attention. Learning and following listening rules helps children listen to their teacher and improves their ability to listen and pay attention during class discussions. Playing listening games such as "Simon Says" or other ideas found at this link can help support this important lesson. http://kidsactivitiesblog.com/52641/listening-‐skills DID YOU KNOW, THAT BECAUSE OF YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS OUR PTA: • Has supported school in scheduling nine wonderful assemblies for our students this year. Coming up soon we have
author Judd Winick visiting and then Cascada de Flores coming to share bilingual Mexican storytelling and dance.
• Is able to give each classroom and support staff a supply fund to purchase essential materials for their room. • Supports materials for our very own Cornell Crew. Come out on 10/4 to work with us from 9-‐2, we can use all the
hands we can get. • Just had a new garbage disposal installed for your Cornell staff in our staff lounge.
This is just a sample of the many things your contributions will help with this year. Thank you all for what you do! We will keep sharing throughout the year. 2015-‐2016 CORNELL DIRECTORY IS COMING SOON...WE NEED YOUR HELP! We are very excited to expedite the directory process this year with a goal of distributing it in October! We are using information that you as parents, have already allowed or denied. When you confirmed your information in the Aeries portal ("Student Information", under "AUTHORIZATIONS"), you chose to allow or deny the release of information for directory purposes in the DIRECTORY: RELEASE OF STUDENT CONTACT INFORMATION category. We will be using this information to collate the internal Cornell School directory that is distributed to families only. If you chose “allow” we will use the contact information you entered. If you chose “deny” we will not include your child in the Cornell Directory. If you would like to make changes to your choices, you have until Friday, September 25th. Go to AERIES PORTAL to check your information. If you have any questions, please contact Kim Hale at mailto:
