14th September 2017 - Week 8 Term 3
Juliette MacIver Visit
We were lucky to have children‟s picture book writer Juliette MacIver visit us this week and speak to all our children. Juliette was very inspiring and a larger than life character. She shared a couple of her stories some of which the children had read before. What was interesting to the children was the number of times she sent books in to be published but had them rejected and sent back. Some of her award winning books are Marmaduke Duck and the Marmalade Jam, Marmaduke Duck and Bernadette Bear, Tom and the Dragon, Little Witch, Toucan Can and Yak and Gnu. Her books are written in rhyme and the classes as part of the follow up to the visit have tried writing rhyme
It was cool we got to see a writer as I really like writing and am interested in it. I learnt what it takes to be a writer. She said that she has had books rejected over 90 times, which must be hard. Sometimes they get rejected so often she gives up on the book. She has published 18 books. Bella B It was interesting listening to her read two of her stories. She said it was fun being a writer. I want to be a writer and write books just like her Emma G I liked when she read the stories, she read in a loud voice and had expression. They were in rhyme. We did some writing in rhyme in class. Taiyo I liked the book Yak and Gnu because they were animals and they were in a boat. She had pictures of the animals on the TV screen. Talia I liked the writer. She was funny and spoke in a loud voice. I like her book “Shark in the Dark”. Rose had already read it to us. Finn

School Science Fair Next Wednesday afternoon, 20 September from 1.00pm – 2.30pm, we will be holding a school Science Fair where each class will be presenting a variety of science experiments they have been working on. Parents will be invited to come along in the afternoon move through the classrooms and to watch the various experiments and quiz the children on why things happened the way they did. Currently the children are practicing their experiments and getting prepared for the afternoon.
We are doing the baking soda and vinegar volcano experiment. We have tested it in a cup and now we are going to do it in the paper mache volcano we built. Scarlett & Clara We made a CD hovercraft and it floats around the desk and works really well. We are a bit nervous but excited to talk to parents about it. Once we practice a bit more it will be better. Zara & Amira We are trying to make a really big bubble. We are going to have a ginormous bubble blower and a really good mixture. It is going to be fun. Dash I‟m making quicksand using cornstarch and water. It will be like real quicksand. I won‟t be able to make enough to stand on but will be able to use models to show how it works. Squire
Golf On Monday our Yr 4-6 children travelled to the Takaka Golf Course for lessons with the Golf Development Officer , Chris Pugh. It is really a taster course by giving the children the opportunity to give it a go to see if it is a sport they may like to pursue.
The Amazing Race Last term a team of students from each of the Golden Bay Schools took part in the Amazing Race. Their aim was to visit and video each of the schools and also interview students and staff to find our about each school. On Monday 25 September at 6pm, there will be a screening of all five movies at the Village Theatre. This is also the „official‟ launch of the Golden Bay Community of Learning/Kahui Ako. Parents, children and friends are most welcome to come along and view the screening as well as hear the children talk about what they found out each school.
Wainui / Taupo Point Trip On Thursday 28 September the school will travel to Wainui as part of our link with DOC and Project Janszoon to check out our area of the Abel Tasman National Park that we help look after. Each class will head to a different area with Rm 1 going out to Taupo Point. Rm 5 will be heading around Uarau Pt and Rm 2 and 3 covering the Wainui sandspit area with Rm 4 moving along towards Uarau Pt. Some of the things we will be doing will be weeding an area of planting we did last year, checking evidence of pests, birdlife, erosion as well as some plant identification. Maori legends and history applicable to the area will also be told. Parents will be very welcome to join us on the day.
Chess Touch Rugby We are looking to enter a Motupipi Touch Rugby Team, Any Yr 4-6 wanting to play please let Mark know. Games start: Wednesday 4th October.
Miniball
We played the Takaka Orcas and we were the first team to beat them. We all played well and we got quite a few goals. Brodie and Ruby scored quite a few of the goals. Kiyo We played the Wolves and won 26 -20. I got my first goal and dribbled for the first time. I normally pass the ball, but I think it will be easier to dribble it now. Iyla We won 28-8. Most of our team took turns playing for them because they only had three players. Archie and I collided with each other and I skinned my elbow. I scored five goals. Jack
Next Friday we will be hosting the Golden Bay Schools‟ Chess Tournament in the Motupipi Hall. Each school puts forward their four best Yr 3/4 and Yr 5/6 children to compete against each other. Currently the children are practicing and a team will be selected early next week.
I‟m enjoying playing chess at school. It is hard playing some people like Ryan. We drew our first game, then I won the next one but I had help from Wirimu so we played again and I won. It was a hard game. Emily Ch
