Position: Epidemiology Assistant Department: Health and Mental Health Services Reports to: Epidemiologist Salary: $24.00/hour Status: 50%, Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Union Probation: 90 days
JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Epidemiologist, the Epidemiology Assistant is responsible for providing statistical and data management support, and participating in all aspects of the design and implementation of research to improve STD/HIV diagnosis, treatment, education, and prevention across Health and Mental Health Services programs. The Epidemiology Assistant will also assist with the design and maintenance of a Sexual Health Program database, oversee monthly data reporting to Sexual Health and Education Program (SHEP) funders, assist with grant writing efforts to fund clinic research activities, and design and complete clinic morbidity reports. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1) Fulfills all reporting requirements for the California State Office of AIDS grant; 2) Participates in all aspects of the design and implementation of projects and studies aimed at improving STD/HIV diagnosis, treatment, education, and prevention services for the LGBT community; 3) Ensures timely data cleaning by creating procedures in SAS to locate and rectify missing values; 4) Conducts morbidity analysis with SAS software for external SHEP funders, including CDC, Los Angeles County Department of HIV and STD Programs (DHSP), and City of West Hollywood; 5) Conducts morbidity analysis with SAS software for internal programs including SHEP, the Transgender Health Program (THP), and the Jeffrey Goodman HIV Clinic (JGC); 6) Designs SAS programs for scientific inquiries that result in conference abstracts and peer-reviewed journal publications under the supervision of the epidemiologist; 7) Prepares monthly internal reports to discuss trends and patterns in morbidity/mortality among clients visiting SHEP, JGC, and THP; 8) Maintain at all times the strict confidentiality of clinic or study records; 9) Completes initial IRB applications and renewals for studies conducted by the Los Angeles LGBT Center; 10) Assure careful compliance with Institutional Review Board (IRB) standards and policies in all study activities; 11) Interface effectively with other Los Angeles LGBT Center departments and programs; 12) Works closely with epidemiology and information systems staff at the Los Angeles County DHSP; 13) Participate in staff meetings, planning meetings and other meetings as needed; 14) Assist in the development and assessment of data collection instruments; 15) Collaborates with other professionals to write grant proposals and obtain funding; 16) Other duties as assigned; JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: 1) Experience in research design, implementation, and data analysis; 2) Experience in database programming and maintenance; 3) Background in epidemiology theory and methods, biostatistics, and/or public health; 4) Experience in disease surveillance and prevention; 5) Grant writing skills a plus; 6) Computer skills and knowledge of word processing, database operations, spreadsheets, and other software systems, including SAS, Microsoft Access and SQL; 7) Strong organizational ability and attention to detail; ability to meet deadlines and coordinate multiple concurrent assignments; 8) Excellent verbal and written communication skills; superior interpersonal communication skills; 9) Ability to work independently with limited supervision; 10) Demonstrated ability to work effectively with men and women of diverse races, ethnicities, ages, and sexual orientations in a multicultural environment; TRAINING, EDUCATION AND LICENSURE: 1) 8-10 years of education in Epidemiology, Biostatistics or related field or equivalent experience a plus.
