Students Talk UNIVERSITY COSTS With the cost of an average university degree now running into the tens of thousands of pounds, students at Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College and their parents listened carefully to a presentation as part of the DfE’s Student Finance Tour.
Joint Effort For Annual
Beach Clean Sixth Form students and younger pupils from Tollbar Multi Academy Trust came together to collect more than 50kg of litter along a 100m stretch of Cleethorpes Beach. Thirty two Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College students and fifteen Reynolds Academy pupils were joined by members of staff for the annual Marine Conservation Society Beachwatch survey. The Sixth Form students have been taking part in the event every year for more than a decade, and the data collected by them is beginning to form incredibly useful evidence for the MCS in their work lobbying for action over marine conservation.

The Student Finance Tour is an annual Department for Education-funded roadshow designed to communicate and engage with a target audience of Year 12 and 13 students and their parents. The presenters are recent graduates, who deliver a factual presentation surrounding Student Finance and their university experience, which is designed to allow the students to make an informed decision about their future. Gemma Brelsford, a presenter from the Student Finance Tour, provided Tollbar Year 13 students with key information regarding financing themselves through higher education, and answered many of their questions.
Christina Hook, Head of Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College, said:
“We deliver academic A Level courses here at Tollbar, which are designed to qualify our students to study for a university degree or a high quality apprenticeship. However, we recognise that students who choose the degree route can be taking on a huge financial burden and it is only right and proper that they have the best information possible to allow them to make an informed decision about their future. This presentation was extremely informative and gave students and their parents a lot to consider.” Gemma Brelsford, of the Dept of Education’s Student Finance Tour, with students from Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College.
Student Oskar Fraczczak:
“I not only contributed to cleaning and preserving the environment, but I also have a unique and interesting activity to add to my CV.”

A personal chat over a cup of tea with six times Snooker World Champion, Steve Davis OBE, gave Year 12 and 13 students an inspirational insight into how to make the most of their skills and attributes. Davis admitted to failing his Maths and Physics A Levels claiming -
“I was in over my head” but he triumphed on the green baize and dominated the sport for more than a decade. Reflecting on his own education, Davis commented: “When I went to do my A Levels I was already heavily involved with playing snooker and it was what I was good at. I knew where I wanted my future to be and I practised and practised.” “If you really want something, no matter what you choose to do in life, you have to put the work in. To pass your A Levels you must work as hard as you can. There is no shortcut,” he said.

Until his retirement in 2016, Davis combined his on-going playing career with his role as a television analyst and commentator for snooker on the BBC, alongside being a DJ of electronic music on local radio station, Phoenix FM. He has also been a guest DJ at Glastonbury. More than 30 years after he began playing snooker as a professional, Steve Davis (now 60) is still ranked number 51 in the world, and his example served as a reminder to students that hard work does pay off.

“The students are amazing at raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. The college has been supporting this charity for a few years now and the efforts of the students never wane. We are very proud of them.”
Year 12 Art students visited the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull to see the annual ‘Turner Prize Exhibition’, which coincided with the City of Culture celebrations. The exhibition comprised of four contemporary artists, exhibiting in a wide range of media and styles, in order to comment on a variety of social and global issues. The students also took advantage of the Ferens private collection, which helped them investigate how artworks have developed from more traditional beginnings. Student Liam Spall said: “It was very inspiring to see different ranges of work and to see what inspired other artists.”

Politics Students Visit
The Seat of Government They then visited the House of Commons, where they were allowed to stand, not sit, on the “Opposition” benches. They also had the opportunity, if they wanted, to stand in Jeremy Corbyn’s position at the Dispatch box. Jon Dalton, Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College Politics Teacher, said:
“This was an extraordinary day for the students and one they will not forget in a hurry. At the end we visited the Education centre for the Committee debate where the students were divided into two groups and, following 20 minutes of research, proved to be quite superb at advocating their particular arguments. We then had a quick peek at 10 Downing Street and walked past the Ministry of Defence on the way home. “This was a fantastic trip which gave these Politics students a first hand insight into the day to day workings of government.”

Year 13 Government and Politics students proved their debating prowess on a visit to the Houses of Parliament at Westminster. The students spent a day in London touring the seat of Government, even taking part in a workshop to debate the usefulness of the Committee system. On the way, they visited the United Kingdom Supreme Court in Parliament Square, observing where the highest court cases in the land are finally decided. They also saw the room where the landmark Brexit ruling was made in 2017, which determined that Parliament, and not the Government, should decide if the Brexit legislation should commence. In the Houses of Parliament, they were shown into the Westminster Hall where Monarchs lie in state and The Trial of Charles I took place. They visited the Committee Rooms and were given a brief talk on the workings of Committees and some of the most “famous” people to have appeared in front of them. At the House of Lords, students were surprised at how small it seemed, but amazed at the beauty and ornateness of the Queen’s throne. They were allowed to stand alongside the famous red benches.

BUSINESS STUDENTS GIVEN UNIQUE INSIGHT INTO
Business and Economics students were given a unique opportunity to see inside the workings of the world’s largest online retailer with a private tour of Amazon’s new £100m logistics warehouse in Doncaster.
Student Sam Dean said:
The tour of the Amazon LBA2 Fulfilment Centre gave the Year 13 A Level students an opportunity to apply their classroom learning and business theories to the real world just weeks before their final exams. The new warehouse is the size of 14 football pitches in length, totals 1.1m sq ft in capacity and has a cutting edge design which is unique to Amazon.
Bradleigh Amis added:
Tours of the site are not routine, but thanks to a good working relationship between Tollbar staff and the Amazon Management Team at Doncaster, students were provided with an introduction to the Amazon ‘flywheel’ business model, Amazon’s leadership principles and the operational challenges faced by the business. They were even given the opportunity to put their questions to the General Manager and Operations Manager.
“The visit gave me a real insight into the internal processes of a business that I am very familiar with but had no idea how complex its operating systems were. It is amazing to now understand what happens after I click ‘buy’.”

“The scale of Amazon’s operations was unbelievable. It puts into perspective the incredible systems that keep these businesses running and ensure that, as customers, we receive our orders on time.” Lois Walker said:
“It was really interesting to see examples of what we had learned in lesson in a business situation, and it provided me with a case study which I could use in my exams.’’ Simon Grimshaw, Curriculum Leader for Business and Economics at Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College, said:
“The visit to Amazon provided an amazing opportunity to see core business concepts learnt in the classroom in a real life business environment. This experience will be invaluable in providing students with relevant examples they can use in their forthcoming exams to maximise their chances of success.” 16 | Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College

WITH EYE ON LEGAL CAREER
Muna Abdi, Megan Pearson, Emily Staniforth and Ellie Sprought took part in the award, which is designed for students who have an interest in a career in education. All four have applied to study teaching qualifications at university. The award involves a minimum of 10 days’ experience working in schools. The girls also had to complete at least two observations in a classroom, write an essay about what type of teacher they wish to be, complete a 10 minute Peer Teach, do at least one hour of Key Skills, and fully research a number of teaching roles. Megan Pearson, who already had an unconditional offer from Bishop Grosseteste University for Education
Studies, said: “The Teaching Award was very helpful and interesting. We worked together on some aspects of the award, such as the Peer Teach. It really helped us to gain a deeper and more realistic understanding of the teaching profession.” Muna Abdi and Ellie Sprought are also looking to study Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status at Bishop Grosseteste University. Emily Staniforth will take a gap year to enhance her primary teaching experience. Richard Foster, Deputy Head of Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College, said: “All of the girls are excellent candidates who have applied for teaching courses and hope to pursue careers in education. This is a very useful award which has helped them to decide if teaching is for them. It gave them tips, advice and knowledge for their UCAS applications, and it has provided them with a certificate for their CVs.”
Year 12 students interested in a career in the Legal Profession described a visit by a District Judge as ‘really motivational.’ District Judge Dan Curtis, who qualified in 1986 and was appointed to Grimsby Magistrates Court in 2005, visited the college to talk about his career and the opportunities available within the legal profession. Judge Curtis said: “The students gave me a real grilling. There were some very good questions.” Alice Goodwin, who is studying English Literature, History and Philosophy A Levels, said: “This talk was really interesting. It gave me a deeper insight into work experience at a law firm.” David Ashford is studying English Literature, History and Maths A Levels. He had already achieved a place at a Cambridge University Summer School for Law and also work experience at a solicitor’s. He said: “We talked about morality in the industry; more about opinion and not just laws. It was really motivational.”

Exhibition Brings Universities To Life For Future Students Year 12 students joined hundreds of others at the Humberside Higher Education Exhibition at Hull University to find out more about university life. The students met UCAS experts, university and college representatives, and industry professionals and took part in inspirational talks, topical seminars, gained application process advice, and enjoyed interactive stands. They were able to ask students from a range of universities about campus life and what it’s really like to study a particular subject. Max Searby said: “The UCAS exhibition really got me thinking about what I want for my future and there were so many people on hand to discuss what you need to do next. It was really helpful.”
Veteran’s Inspirational Visit A Blesma veteran, who took part in Channel 4’s ‘Hunted’ programme to raise money for the charity, spoke to Year 12 students about resilience and coping with adversity. Kirk Bowett, from The Limbless Veterans Charity, lost an arm in Iraq in 2013 after being injured by an IED. The former Infantryman who served with the Mercian Regiment and worked in close protection after he left the Army in 2010, teamed up with Jez Scarrett, a 57-yearold former Royal Marine, who had to have his right leg amputated after a motorcycle accident in 1982. The pair took part in the hit TV show where contestants leave home and fall off the grid, hoping to evade capture by a group of security experts.
Kirk visited the college with Lily Phillips, a Blesma Facilitator. He said: “I spoke about being injured in Iraq I was blown up by an IED while in an armoured vehicle. It is all about resilience and what you do afterwards.” Lily Phillips, said: “Blesma is working in conjunction with The Drive Project. We go into schools and give inspirational talks. Students can take it back to their lives and learn about coping mechanisms.” Sixth Form student Jamie Raven said: “It was really inspirational. He deserves a lot of respect. His story puts life into perspective.”

STUDENTS TRIUMPH IN
BUSINESS COMPETITION A Year 12 Business Studies team triumphed in the Lincoln University Management Games Competition. Two teams from the college took part in the 2018 Management Games, which consisted of a number of challenges based around a fictional business. Students had to assess all the available evidence to recommend a clear and coherent strategy. They also had to have several meetings during the day with key stakeholders, such as trade union representatives, and adapt or justify their chosen strategy based on these. Organising staff took on the roles of these key stakeholders. Simon Grimshaw, Curriculum Leader For Business, said:

“This competition was a fantastic opportunity to experience a real-life business scenario. The students were pushed and challenged all day and there were a few surprises thrown in as well that they had to react to. They worked well as a team at all times and were a credit to the Sixth Form, especially the winning team.”

Stunning Work On Display at Year 13
Students, parents and staff were treated to a visually stunning exhibition of A-Level Art at the college’s end of course show. The Year 13 Art show was the culmination of two years of hard work for the students. Tony Davis, Curriculum Leader For Art, said: “Students had to choose an aspect of Art and Design to investigate; a theme, style or issue. Their work had to be accompanied by a 3,000 word essay that explained their inspiration, decisions, developments and reflection.

They also had to respond to a seven question exam paper that suggests a variety of artists, styles and themes as starting points. Students had a three month preparation period to investigate contextual references and develop, explore and ultimately create a personal outcome in a 15-hour controlled test. The students have worked so hard and produced an incredible volume of outstanding work. We are very proud of them all.”

Geography Students Visit
Malham Tarn
Year 12 Geography A Level students visited Malham Tarn, North Yorkshire, to collect primary data for their non-examined assessment, which forms part of their final A Level grade. Students set their own individual enquiry question, before devising their own data collection methods and collecting data as part of their three day residential visit to Malham Tarn Field Studies Centre. They had workshops on statistical tests in order to process the data and to prove and disprove statistical significance. Students were initially given a tour of the site (including pasture, heath and woodland) and an idea of the wide potential for independent research and equipment available. Research focused on either hydrological processes within the catchment, or carbon storage. Students considering carbon storage also used the laboratories to process soil data, including moisture content, PH and mass. Jacob Choppen and Elliot Sweeney record data.

Students
Celebrate Their Last Day
Programmes
Talented Year 12 students have been gaining extra support to reach their full potential after achieving places on two prestigious university programmes. It was back to the 1960s for this group of students.
in style
Students at the College celebrated their last day in style, turning out in an array of interesting outfits including Del Boy, Vicky Pollard, and Freddie Mercury, as well as groups of lifeguards, Hula girls and astronauts.
Thirteen students have been taking part in Next Step York, which provides selected Year 12 students with the opportunity to participate in a programme of activity that will support their application to a research intensive university. The programme is particularly aimed at students from groups that are under-represented in higher education. The students attend conferences, mentoring sessions and residential placements to enhance their knowledge and experience of studying at a higher level and to take some of the anxiety out of moving to university.
Four further students are part of the Pathways to Medicine programme, which is run in conjunction with the Sutton Trust at Hull York Medical School. The programme offers Year 12 students a range of opportunities to give them an insight into the medical profession, support them through the application and selection process for medical school, and prepare them for attending university. Christina Hook, Head of Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College, said:
“We are thrilled that so many of our students have been successful in accessing these incredible opportunities. This continues the well-established relationship we have built over time with two of the region’s best university centres.”

The College tradition was an opportunity for students to bid farewell to their peers and teaching staff, and for many, it was the culmination of seven years of education within the Tollbar Multi Academy Trust. A special assembly was held to mark the occasion, and it was certainly a day to remember!
These science students were astronauts for the day.

DESTINATION CAMBRIDGE
For Top Geographer!
Lois Walker secured the highest results in the College, having notched up A* grades in Business and Economics, as well as A grades in Geography and Maths. This fantastic set of results will enable her to pursue her passion for geography at one of the world’s leading universities, as she takes up her offer to study the subject at Cambridge in the Autumn. Following a nervous wait for her results, Lois was clearly delighted with her outcomes and commented: “Of course I am very pleased with my results, but it is also a relief. It was hard work, but I got there in the end.”
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES From Top A Level Students
Year 13 students celebrated some exceptional results, with a 97% pass rate across all A Level qualifications. Several subject areas achieved a 100% A*-C pass rate, including Geography, History, Economics, Media and Art and Design. In History, 60% of students achieved A*-B grades, and in Art and Design, 86% of students gained A*-B grades, with 14% securing A* grades. Further success was achieved in English Literature, with 63% of students gaining A*-B grades, and in Maths, where 85% gained A*-C grades. The prestigious A* grade was also awarded to students in an impressive eight subject areas, including Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Religious Studies. These results mean that a large number of students will now take up places on highly sought after university courses across the UK, with many students moving on to study at Russell Group Universities, including Cambridge, York, Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, Exeter and Newcastle. Students will be embarking upon an exciting variety of courses, ranging from Law, Politics and History, to Medicine, Chemical Engineering, and International Business, to name just a few. Double celebration for twins Dan and Abbie Moore. Abbie is embarking upon an accountancy apprenticeship with Ernst and Young, whilst Dan will be studying Medicine.

Some students opted to pursue a different route to that offered by university, and their A Level results enabled them to secure their places on high quality apprenticeship schemes. This year, students gained places on apprenticeships with a number of reputable local and national companies, including Forrester Boyd, Sylvester Keal, Cristal and Morrisons.
Christina Hook, Leader of Tollbar MAT Sixth Form College, said: “Once again, we are immensely proud of the achievements of all of our students. Their results are testimony to the dedication and perseverance that they have shown throughout their studies, and we wish them every success as they embark upon this exciting new chapter in their lives.”
Head of Sixth Form, Christina Hook, said: “Lois is a truly exceptional student who thoroughly deserves the outstanding results that she has achieved in all of her subjects. The application process for Cambridge is gruelling, with applicants facing tough competition for places from students of the highest calibre from around the world - being offered a place is an achievement in itself. We are exceptionally proud of Lois, and have every confidence that she will go on to achieve even greater things during her time at Cambridge.”
MEDICAL DEGREE BECKONS
For A* Student
Dan Moore’s two A* grades in Biology and Chemistry, along with his A grade in French, will see him heading to Newcastle University in the Autumn, to embark upon the challenge of a degree in Medicine. Remarkably, Dan was offered places to study Medicine at each of the institutions that he applied to, an impressive achievement given the exceptionally rigorous testing and interviews that potential medics are subjected to. Dan’s results are the culmination of two years of exceptionally hard work, and reflecting on this, he said: “I will be the first to go to university in my immediate family. It was definitely hard work, but it was worth it.”
