Welcome to the November edition of the 2015-2016 monthly school newsletter from Golden Valley High School. GENERAL INFORMATION GVHS Mission Statement The mission of Golden Valley High School is to provide all students with a comprehensive education that prepares them for post-secondary success in a global 21st century society. Infinite Campus Parent Portal Parents, have you been checking your student’s grades, attendance, assignments, etc. on the campus portal? It’s a great way to stay on top of your student’s success! If you have not created a portal account yet, please visit www.hartdistrict.org and click on “Infinite Campus” on the secondary title bar to create an account and gain access to your student’s information. PAWS Center Golden Valley High School's PAWS Center (Parent Awareness, Workshops and Support) focuses on connecting our school, families, and the community to help our students succeed at GV and beyond. We are here to assist you with anything you might need to help your student be successful. Please email us or stop by anytime. We are open during school hours. The PAWS Center will be working with PAC this year offering various workshops to support our parents. We are located in the 500 building at GVHS. December 7th, 7pm Canyon Country Community Center 18792 Flying Tiger Drive, Santa Clarita 91387 Detective Velek will our guest speaker. He will share his knowledge of drugs and our youth. He has a box of confiscated goodies that you won’t want to miss. Come learn what your students already know and be informed. This event will be in conjunction with the PAC meeting for the month of December. The PAC meeting starts at 6:30pm. Does your student need a grade boost? We have tips and ideas for you to help your student be more successful. Email us for a copy of our Grade Booster Flyer or check out our website and download it yourself. The more you know the more you can support your student in their learning. I Care For Kids is being offered by the Assistance League of Santa Clarita. I Care For Kids is a program that will be available all year long. This program will pay for eye exams and eyeglasses for any student who needs them. Please contact us at

Parent Advisory Council Our GV PAC Mission Statement: To encourage and provide opportunities for parents to get involved and actively participate in our students' education, build on their strengths, and support them in reaching their goals. The Parent Advisory Council meets the 4th Monday of each Month in the Golden Valley Library. GVHS Library Hours/Services: Welcome to Golden Valley Library, home of the Grizzlies! We're happy you're here to spend time in the library, whether it's to explore new books, get some work done, do research, talk to library staff, work with the counselors....there's so much you can do there! Monday-Thursday 7:15am-3:15pm Friday 1-hour late start 8:15am-3:15pm Friday 2-hour late start 9:15am-3:15pm Minimum days: 7:15am-1:00pm Intervention Golden Valley High School works diligently to ensure that students are achieving at high levels. In so doing, we have created an Intervention Program to meet the many needs of our students. Student Work Center: is Mon-Thurs. from 3:10 - 5:10 p.m. in the GV Library for All Subjects. ELL students and parents: Tutoring and support is available every Friday late start in room 205 at 8am! Come in to finish homework, study, work on projects or work with a tutor to improve your grades! Math Center is open 3 days a week -- all levels of math are welcome to attend! Tuesday from 3:10 - 4:10 p.m. in room 503 Wednesday 6:45 - 7:45 a.m. in room 504 Thursday from 3:10 4:40 p.m. in room 501 Science Support is every Tuesday & Thursday after school from 3:10-4:10pm in room 310 with Mr. Zayas. Social Studies Support is available in room 513 from 3:15-4:15pm. All areas of social studies are welcome to attend. Computers are available for working on class assignments and completing projects. The dates for Social Studies Support are listed below. See Mr. Fisher for more information. Tuesday 11/17 Spanish Support: There is Spanish tutoring available every Tuesday in library from 3:10-4:10. If your student can't make it on Tuesdays please contact their teacher to find out about other times your student can be supported. Other comments or questions, contact Courtney Straka at

In addition, many teachers hold academic interventions of their own. Be sure to have your student talk to their teacher’s about help before school, at brunch, or after school. Many teachers are available to help students during these times. Please email/talk to individual teachers for times and locations.
COUNSELING DEPARTMENT INFORMATION Counselors just met with all 9th graders and worked with the Naviance program to develop a 4 year plan. The 4 year plan helps students to map out their courses for the next 4 years. College Visits for Juniors and Seniors Attention all Juniors and Seniors: The following colleges will be visiting Golden Valley to discuss admission requirements and answer all questions, Come sign up in the counseling office ASAP! Syracuse on 11/3 at 9:15 am UCLA on 11/5 at 11:30 am USC on 11/6 at 9:50 am UCR on 11/18 at 11:30 am Seniors: College Applications Attention Seniors: Need help with your college applications?? Counselors will be holding an application workshop on November 3rd in the Library at lunch! There will be tons of info and an opportunity to answer questions. Come to the counseling office asap to sign up! Free SAT Prep. Sessions Attention students: There will be FREE SAT prep. sessions on November 7th, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm in the 300 computer core. Space is limited so it will be first come, first serve. Students can sign up in the AP office. For more information, please see Ms. Landeros. Connect to Success Attention all Juniors: Connecting to Success Career and College Readiness Conference will be taking place on Thursday, November 12th, 2015. The Purpose of the this conference is to empower students to “Achieve at the Business of Life.” The conference is FREE to all 11th graders. Interested students can sign up in the AP office. Space is limited, so sign up now! Please see Ms. Landeros if you have any questions. Scholarships Applications are available on Naviance or from Mrs. Navia in the counseling center. COMMUNITY EVENTS The 9th annual family literacy festival is November 14th from 10am to 2pm. It’s at the Old Town Newhall Library. It’s fun for the whole family and it’s free! Call Nicole Ramirez at the Newhall Library at 661.799.6103. Visit the Newhall Libraries website for an entire calendar of teen events for the month of November. http://teens.santaclaritalibrary.com/ The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of San Fernando has quarterly speaker events. The next one is on Monday, November 16th at 6pm at the Child and Family Center. The resource panel will include: Child & Family Center, Henry Mayo Hospital, “Action” Substance Abuse Program, Turning Point, Outpatient Program, Department of Rehabilitation and Family Focus Resource Center. Come and find your mental Health Resources in Santa Clarita. ATHLETICS Our Fall Sports are off to a great start. Cross Country, Football, and Girls’ Volleyball league play begins as all three programs look to continue on their improved preseason results. Girls’ Tennis and Girls’ Golf continues to build on their league play leading in to the last half of league play.
