MODULAR MULTILEVEL BATTERY Reference No. B73264 CHALLENGE Nowadays concepts for electromobiles are based besides motor and battery on many different components as e.g. battery power supplies, converters, inverters and filters. This ensemble of components has some disadvantages: (i) The interplay between the components is not optimized in respect to ef-
inverters/converters. (iv) Balancing of State-of-charge levels of different battery cells introduces losses. These are just a few of the problems addressed by innovative modular multilevel converter (MMC, compare Reference No. B71203) concept allowing parallel connectivity of cells.
INNOVATION The Modular Multilevel Battery (M2B) is a MMC-system included in the battery system. M2B has full functionality of power electronics like inverters, converters, chargers (220-800V, 10-350A, AC/DC) as well as a loss free battery management system. Intelligent control allows about 20% higher overall efficiency (and travelling range) compared to IGBT-based systems. Further advantages are expendebility of filters, possibility of vehicle-2-vehicle charging, bidirectionality, hot swapping cells, optimum recuperation, lower costs, ...

Inverters, converters etc. are not needed anymore.
