Beall Elementary School PTA General Membership Meeting Beall Elementary School Media Center May 3, 2016, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm 1. Call to Order 2. Treasurer’s Report a. Report out on funds raised at Dine-Out Nite, Silent Auction, and March Madness b. Proposed changes to budget for approval i. Silent Auction – Proposed to add this item to the budget with a proposed income of $5,000 and expense of $500 (this is roughly what the actual income and expenses were from the recent silent auction). Shana Helton motioned for the PTA to approve this proposal; the motion was seconded and passed by a unanimous verbal vote. ii. Multi-Cultural Nite – technically Beall PTA has no expenses as all items were donated. However, we should not rely on donations in the future and should budget just in case. Juliana Lutwin motioned to add expenses of $150 to the budget; the motion was seconded and passed by unanimous verbal vote. c. Member present discussed whether additional PTA funds could be used to make improvements to the lower playground. One member suggested developing a 3-5 year plan for capital improvements. 3. Officer’s Reports: a. President i. Received thank-you note from the Tree House for a donation of $150, for the talk regarding recognizing and preventing child abuse. ii. Timing of raffle during March Madness was related to the flood at the Richard Montgomery gym and improvements that were needed there. Thanks to Andy’s for picking up the majority of the expenses, but there is no guarantee this will happen in the future. iii. Spammers exploited Beall PTA front-end website, specifically by creating fake events on the Beall PTA events page. Permissions have been changed to prevent future occurrences. b. Vice President of Communications i. Recently published April newsletter ii. Upcoming events 1. Staff Appreciation Week 2. Dine-Out Thursday at Five Guys and Marble Slab is last of the year, from 5-9pm and need to bring flyer. 3. Dragon Read-a-Thon kicks off May 13 4. Food Truck, Family Reading, and PJ Nite is May 19 5. Many June events: June 3 (rain date June 10) Beall picnic; June 7 PTA Volunteer Celebration c. Vice President of Programs i. Last after school program started today (short Science club: Wearable Circuits and It’s Electric); rest of activities are in full swing. ii. Going to try all of Fall 2016, activities in the same week. d. Corresponding Secretary i. Approval of past meeting minutes: December, January, February, and March. Motion to approve Dec – March minutes from Erika Anderson; motion was seconded and passed by verbal vote.

Re-cap of fundraising activities previously mentioned by other officers. f. MCCPTA Delegate i. Voted in the new PTA slate for Montgomery County ii. Overview of current topics being covered by the County PTA iii. President’s and Principal’s dinner in May 4. Principal’s Report a. Thank you for Staff Appreciation b. School funding was cut again, 1 less teacher in 5th grade; 1 less teacher in Kindergarten. Class sizes very large next year in 5th and 1st grades; hoping for another allocation as summer rolls along. c. Kindergarten orientation Thursday and Friday. Projecting 125 new students next fall. d. HVAC work being done over the summer so main office will be located in the portables starting June 22. e. Meeting on May 5 re: Montgomery County’s Choice Programs (magnet; highly gifted centers, etc.). Focus on achievement gap. On MCPS website. f. PARC assessments over the next 3 weeks for grades 3-5. School tries to keep these low-key to avoid stressing out kids. g. Cultural Arts Assembly went well yesterday; learn from mistakes. 5. Standing Committee Reports a. Membership: presentation planned for Kindergarten orientation day. 6. Unfinished Business a. Vote on election slate for 2016-2017 Beall PTA Board members (presented by Karen Saffel). Kimberly Heifetz motioned to approve; the motion was seconded and approved by unanimous verbal vote. The new PTA Board members for the 2016-17 school year will be: i. President: Paula Tully ii. Vice-President for Planning and Programming: Melissa Scales iii. Vice-President Communications: Tyra Estwick iv. Treasurer: Gotthard Szabo v. Secretary: Janet Brown 7. New Business a. Kathleen Cohan - Parent Engagement i. Parents would like more academic resources for helping students with homework. Website demo on Available Parent Resources, which will be done by grade level. b.
