Changes for 2015-2016 MICS Cheerleading • Cheer will be broken into two seasons: Football/Fall & Basketball/winter • MICS will hold two separate tryouts: May 19-21 & early November • Football season will have two cheer squads: MS squad- 6th-8th & Varsity squad 9th-12th • Basketball season will have three cheer squads: MS squad-6th-8th, JV squad-9th-12th, Varsity squad- 9th-12th • Cheerleaders are not guaranteed a spot on a squad both seasons. Each individual will have to go through the tryout process for each season.
Tryouts Football Cheerleading MS & Varsity May 19-21 Items required prior to trying out to be a cheerleader are: A) NCHSAA sports physical (located on the MICS website), no other physical form will be accepted, no exceptions. B) MICS liability waiver (located on MICS website)
Judged Requirements: • 2 Sideline Cheers- voice projection, motion precision, timing • Jumps (Toe Touch & Jump of Choice)- height, timing, form, finish • Dance- rhythm, movement, timing • Tumbling (cheerleaders must attempt one)- somersault, cartwheel, round off, back handspring, standing back tuck • Splits- flexibility • Attitude/Personality-attitude toward cheerleading, listening/following instructions, willingness to try, works well with others, leadership qualities
Attendance • Cheerleaders are required to attend all practices and games on the schedule unless otherwise approved by the coach. • Missing practices, games, or events for an academic reason must be communicated to the coach and approved by the athletic director prior to the happening. Academic absences will only be approved when the student is being tutored/mentored at MICS. • Cheerleaders who are recovering from personal injury, sickness, or surgery are expected to dress in their cheerleading uniforms and perform as many duties as permissible depending on the particular injury.
Discipline Information Consequences shall be determined by the coach with administration approval for all violations committed. 10 or more demerits or physical violence toward a member of the team or coaches, as well as verbal altercations or bullying, may result in removal from the team. Parents will be notified through e-mail, phone call, or face-to-face conversation when a demerit/consequence has been given to a cheerleader.

Financial Responsibility All efforts are made to keep the cost of being a cheerleader down to a reasonable level so that each student in the Mountain Island Charter School is given an opportunity to participate if they so wish. However, cheerleaders should be prepared to spend between $200$300 per year on personal cheerleading items.
