Member Relations Officer Position Description Title: Member Relations Officer Eligibility Open to Embark Sustainability Society members, which consists of undergraduate and graduate students at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and associate members.
About Embark Embark is a student-led non-profit society that empowers the next-generation of sustainability leaders at SFU through grants, training, and engagement. SFU students are automatically members and eligible to be Directors of the society. Students contribute either $1.75 or $3.50 a semester to Embark through a student sustainability levy collected by the University and set by student referendum. We currently represent 35,000+ undergraduate and graduate student members. Up to two associate members (non-SFU student member) may be elected as a Director. New directors are elected at each Annual General Meeting of the society.
Location: Most meetings are held at Burnaby but they can also be held in Surrey, Vancouver or online.

Purpose of the Position To communicate with the members of the organization, soliciting and integrating their feedback into Embark’s initiatives, and build positive relationships with student groups on campus.

Co-chair the Relations Committee together with the External Relations Officer. This includes but is not limited to: calling the meeting, developing the agenda, and alternatively chairing the meeting with the External Relations Officer. Overviewing communications with student body, including but not limiting to: preparing press releases and other communications materials as needed, organizing promotional campaigns, and assisting with the organization of the Annual General Meeting. Answer any questions students have about Embark and the organization’s work. Establish and maintain relationships with various student organizations on campus. Liaise with the Simon Fraser Student Society and Graduate Student Society on behalf of Embark. Report relevant relations activities to the Board of Directors.
Week-in-the-life The week of a Member Relations Officer typically includes a meeting with the Executive DIrector to discuss ongoing or future campaigns and a meeting with representatives from student groups to discuss joint projects. The officer handles emails from students or organizations seeking partnership and prepares the agenda for the relations committee meeting. In addition, the officer might prepare press releases discussing Embark’s reaction to various sustainability-related news on campus.

Excellent social and relationship building skills Ability to coordinate several projects at once Adaptability and a positive attitude in the face of challenges Communication skills, including the ability to draft timely and clear emails
Things to look out for It would be useful for the candidate to have a working understanding of how student organizations are structured and operate as well as an understanding of on-campus student organizations and their respective work.
