Monday 17 November 2014 AIFTT4 0501A ATM + Hands On SUPINE ELONGATING THE LEG SHIFTING WEIGHT Ref m/m: While standing, shifting weight L-R. Pay attention to coming back home. Supine: Catch R foot w/R hand. Hold R foot w/R hand and elongate R leg, shifting weight to R; make sure coming back home is easy and smooth. Repeat on L. W/each hand holding homolateral foot, alternate elongating R-L leg. Use the m/m of the legs to shift weight R-L. Repeat shifting R-L while holding on to spread knees. Roll all the way to the side. When on side, imagine how you would come to sitting by continuing the m/m. Then play w/coming to sitting, finding the easy way for you, w/o holding breath. It is allowed to stop holding knees or feet. Come back to elongating R leg, holding R foot w/R hand, L leg standing, rolling R-L. Reference m/m in standing. Duo: In standing, accompany partner while shifting weight R-L, w/hands on pelvis, lower and higher on the ribs. Listen to how partner comes back to the middle: home. Notice differences L + R. Coffee AIFTT4 0502A Demo + Hands On Rolling up to sitting with partner giving resistance in different places Demo w/Yael rolling from supine to sitting in a way, and on the side, that is easy for her. First observe the m/m, then Angelica gives resistance in a place that seems less organized, e.g. the forehead. Compare to the m/m on the other side, looking at rhythm, trajectory of head, timing of lifting the head, etc. Duo: A observes B rolling U to sitting, from supine w/legs long or w/legs standing. B presses gently, giving resistance. A can use the resistance and/or find a different trajectory, or A finds out s/he doesn't know how to continue the m/m. B can try to find out if there is a place where A can be stopped. First on one side for a while, then on the other. Not alternating. AIFTT4 0503A Lab Rolling up to sitting giving resistance at the beginning of the m/m Duo: A stops B at one place initially, so B has to organize around it.
AIFTT4 0504A Demo + Hands On Rolling up to sitting accompanying the head Demo w/Romina Duo: B supine, A sitting at the head. A holds B's head, sensing and following B's m/m through the head. B begins to roll slowly, U to as far as A can continue to accompany B's head. Then B continues rolling to sit. At this point, A lets go of the head. Repeat while A has eyes closed, sensing to know where B is. Note: Hands should be supporting, not hindering. B may give A feedback on hands. Lunch AIFTT4 0505A Demo + Hands On Rolling the head and picking up a leg Demo w/Deniz supine on the table: look at criteria for comfort. Observe breathing and ability to swallow to know if head is at the right height. Observe and guess which way head will roll more easily. Roll the head and find out. Pick U the leg on the easier side; lift and make connection to knee-hip. Go back to rolling head, find out differences from before. Lift the other leg. Roll head again. Standing as reference m/m. Rather than doing, listening gives person and nervous system an opportunity to reorganize. AIFTT4 0508A ATM ON BACK SLIDING THE FOOT ON INSIDE AND ON OUTSIDE WHILE ROLLING THE HEAD 1 Supine: note which way R/L foot is pointing and to which leg head is oriented. Both legs standing: let R leg lengthen, R foot sliding D leaning on its outside. Repeat w/R foot leaning on its inside. Slide R foot D on its outside, then U on its inside. Then the opposite. Both legs standing: R hand rolls head to R as R leg elongates leaning on outside. R knee goes outside as well. When R leg is long, roll head back to the middle, then roll head to R as leg comes back U in same way. Repeat rolling the head L w/R hand, and moving R leg long and back U w/knee to inside and foot sliding on its inside. Standing: compare L + R. Repeat on L side. Then L foot slides downward on its outside w/head rolling L, and U on its inside w/head rolling R. Each time when leg and head come to rest, roll head back to middle. Repeat moving in opposite direction.
Tuesday 18 November AIFTT4 0509A ATM CONTRACTING THE ABDOMEN WHILE EXHALING Caro van Iersel Contract the abdomen while exhaling in various positions, such as supine, prone, supine w/head lifted differentiating rectus from other abdominal muscles, w/pelvis lifted, kneeling w/top of the head resting on the floor, on all fours, requiring different adjustments from the chest, etc. (Source: AY #21) Coffee AIFTT4 0510A Lab Preparing ATM -- Finding acts; SPIFFER; red thread. A lifts the leg on that side and brings it a little more outside and back/inside and back. Rotate the leg in these different positions, noticing where m/m is easier. Wednesday 19 November AIFTT4 0512A ATM EQUALIZING THE NOSTRILS Reference m/m: While standing count 1 to 5 in your native or preferred language. Notice the space around you: F/B, U/D, sides. Supine: sense breathing m/m in cavity of chest/abdomen. Begin to hum at comfortably low tone, noticing vibrations. Explore variations in humming at low tone and at high tone, w/one nostril closed R/L. Repeat w/mouth open, sounding vowels. At the end, come back to reference m/m. (Source: AY #5)
AIFTT4 0513A Discussion ATM for voice and feeling yourself while you talk There were various experiences during the ATM equalizing the nostrils, including differences in voice, chest, etc. Angelica talked about the influence of language on the development and use of voice. AIFTT4 0514A Class Choosing a place for the teacher Experiment in the room: 4 people are the teachers, the others are students coming to an ATM class. The students enter the empty room and settle in w/imaginary blanket. Then the teachers come in. They look for and choose the best place to be to address the entire group, each individually. This could turn out to be 4 different places, or could be one spot if all four have the same idea. Babies can't stand, no standing feet/legs. Demo w/Katheline Supine: roll the head. Lift leg on easy side, try pronation/supination; can foot go both ways? Differentiate leg/pelvic m/m, first standing at opposite side, then at same side moving greater trochanter. Revisit lifting the leg, pro/supination, and rolling the head. Do this w/partner. Thursday 20 November AIFTT4 0518A ATM ON BACK AND STANDING - PUSHING THE FLOOR AND SOUNDING Scan in standing. Notice the support in yourself and from the space around you. Reference m/m: in duo, A talks. At professional distance, B observes/listens. On back: How does one stay with pure perception versus interpretation? Breathe in through nostrils/throat/trachea/bronchia into your lungs. Follow breath D into belly, to pubic bone/pelvic floor. Legs standing: push feet into the floor, follow the m/m to your head. Notice entire back on the floor, push feet softly and breathe out. Next time, breathe out as you push towards your head; include humming while breathing out. Repeat one foot at a time. Note if there is a different connection from R – L foot to your trunk and head. Make sound and feel it coming through your nostrils, then open
mouth and let the sound come out. Lengthen one leg, keep one standing. Push through the in/outside of the standing foot, small m/m, listen to the sound. On back: lift head w/interlaced hands, hold it there and push the feet while making sound. Feel the relation w/the floor. Direct the sound through your back, supported by your feet. Hands w/palms D under lower ribs, push into the floor while making sound and breathing out. Standing: sink a little by bending knees and hip joints, breathe out while coming up and making a sound. Reference m/m: How do you now feel while standing and talking to your partner? Did anything change? Coffee break AIFTT4 0519A Talk + Discussion Pushing through the feet as an entrance to the voice Check in about the voice lesson. Pushing through the feet is a simple entrance to the voice. Responses included: It was very touching! Vibrations make you feel where you are. Harmony. Martina recites Rilke: “Ich kreise um God …” from Stundenbuch. Purifying, liberating to be able to use one's voice in this way, staying in the listening quality. Demo w/skeleton to clarify findings around and in the lesson. AIFTT4 0522A ATM ON BACK SLIDING THE FOOT ON INSIDE AND ON OUTSIDE WHILE ROLLING THE HEAD 2 Supine: Both feet standing, slide D R leg on the outside of the foot and U on the inside. Repeat in reverse. The sliding happens along one line, R heel has a connection with R sitting bone. Roll head to R w/R hand while the R leg slides downwards on the outside and roll head to L while the leg comes up through the inside. Do the opposite. Note lateral relationship between leg and arm. Repeat on other side. Repeat contralateral L and R. Standing: notice how you’re standing. Note how much you are bent/straight in knees and hip joints. You now know different ways to stand.
Friday 21 November AIFTT4 0523A ATM + Lab ON THE KNEES – BENT FOR PRAYER PART 1 On back: Scan, roll the head. Stand on hands and knees: Start to sit B on your heels. Notice the folding in the hip joints, notice head. How can you involve the head, neck, and chest? Repeat m/m w/toes tucked under. On hands, knees & feet: lift R knee while you go B. Where can you place L foot? Repeat on other side. Play w/it. On hands, knees & feet: move towards your heels. Explore interplay between head and tailbone/pelvis. Head is free to look around as a baby would do. W/partner, direct the head and tailbone lightly to show direction and initiation. Notice difference in standing. On hands, knees & feet: tuck your toes under and sit B while lifting both knees. Find a nice transition from this position to lying on the back. On hands, knees & feet: sit B, squat, roll B, and reverse with momentum. W/partner: help by catching the wrists of your partner who is rolling U and pull a little to help them come F w/the hands on the floor in front. AIFTT4 0525A Discussion How to use an ATM script Teaching a lesson without script is best. You can have a script close by, where you can look at it, but don’t hold it in your hand and read your lesson from the script. If you only read words, your students will probably stay away. How do you make the lesson your own? When you teach, feeling connected with the m/m you teach, it will have a totally different quality. Write your own reminders of the steps. Different ways/styles of teaching. Q: The script starts with big movements, do we have to follow that? A: Stay with the questions we usually ask, such as “How far within comfort?” The script isn’t written by Gaby Yaron; someone else wrote the script! Then it was translated. Q: In the script the shoulder blade isn’t mentioned, only the shoulder. A: You are free, if you feel it’s useful, to specify more about the structure. Think about self-image. Q: “Don’t roll” is in the instructions of the lesson, which seems to be hard to do. A: How can you stop it when you see undifferentiated movement going on? Q: What’s the use of, at the end of the lesson, making circles with the shoulders while lying on the back both going in the same direction? A: This could be for integrating or bringing some symmetry. Feel free to bring in small variations in the transcriptions of the lessons. Help partner to go D to the floor by holding hands, partner moves free on the floor and is helped coming U again. Help partner D to the floor by holding one hand and turn partner around on the floor and then help them U again with the same hand holding. A. Push your partner gently in different places, give your partner the time to respond. B. Absorb, center, feeling your own skeleton; see if you can without tensing, pulling back, being afraid. A. Reach into feet of your partner and into your own feet while you push. B. Think of expanding in the place you’re touched, instead of shrinking (running away). This touch is an opportunity for growth. This is a Martial Arts thing. Expand into the Force. If it’s too much just move away. Hanging in it fully is a bit dangerous, like giving your balance away.

Sense yourself in standing. Scan on back. On hands, knees & feet: move B towards sitting on heels. Repeat w/toes tucked under. Note pelvic floor widening as you sit B. Repeat and lift R/L knee as you go B. Come to sit on L heel as R knee lifts and bring R foot to stand; find place where R leg can stand. Repeat on other side. Stay sitting on R/heel w/L foot standing, place L hand on L knee, and make circles w/L knee, this is a circle m/m in L hip joint. On hands, knees & feet: sit B towards heels and compare L + R. Repeat circling w/R knee. On hands, knees & feet: w/toes tucked under, bring R foot standing close to R hand. Repeat on L. Find easiest place in/outside the hand. People use different trajectories. Alternate placing foot next to hand R/L, then both feet standing outside of hands. Heels are on the floor. Tuesday 25 November 2014 AIFTT4 0533A ATM FROM SITTING TO STANDING WHILE TURNING Caro van Iersel Sitting w/the soles of the feet facing each other w/o touching: arms are F as if hugging a large Teddy bear, finger tips touching. Turn the head and the arms together R/L. Repeat the m/m w/arms and head going opposite, then together again. Note weight shift on buttocks. Increase the m/m, legs go side to side. Repeat only to R, continue to come U to stand on both knees. Go back D softly w/o falling. Repeat to L side. Alternate to L + R. As you come U on the knees, bring the B leg F to standing position. Continue the turning of the arms and the pelvis coming to half kneeling. Bring the leg B to go D again. You can help balance by placing one hand on the floor, find out which hand. Repeat the m/m and when you have one leg U in standing position, continue to move the pelvis in the same direction, so the 2nd leg can come to standing. The hand is on the floor: the pelvis needs to keep moving to come to stand on 2 legs. Go D by reversing the m/m. Standing w/feet spread: place R hand on the floor in front between the legs, leaving space for the pelvis. Turn the pelvis, and go D, so you will be sitting cross legged. Repeat w/L hand on the floor. Summary of Yael, who was teaching: “the variations in the ATM invite different use of self in flexion and extension.” Some practical aspects when you teach: - The room you teach in needs to be warm, clean, good size. - Have extra lessons ready, have a plan B. - Timeframe: be aware of time, so student feels safe. Think ahead of what variations you could leave out, don't rush towards the end of the lesson. Lunch AIFTT4 0536A Demo + Hands On Supine - pushing through long leg Demo w/Inga: Shift weight in standing, note differences L/R. Supine: bringing together what we have done so far: Roll the head, pick up the leg on the side the head rolls to more easily. Find out in which position ab/adduction leg rotates most easily. Find out about the ability to pronate foot. Rotate leg inwards, either by standing on opposite side lifting pelvis and upper leg close to pelvis and differentiating; or standing on same side rolling leg from greater trochanter and differentiate from pelvis. Revisit pronation to see if the leg is ready for standing. Begin pushing at lateral aspect of the foot, pronating. If easy, hold heel w/one hand from inside, w/other hand on outside form a 'stir up' to push through the leg. When not connecting or when there is a response of tensing up, check the height of head support, visit m/m pelvis towards 12 o'clock, visit lifting the shoulders and the connection to chest, support cervical vertebrae. Then come back to m/m pelvis to 12, and to pushing through the leg. Repeat on other side. Self-use is especially important when pushing: no effort, just very gently leaning while staying long. Demo w/skeleton: same steps as above. Note: when pushing through the leg, the stir up is at distal end of the heel bone. Duo: go through these steps w/partner. Wednesday 26 November 2014 AIFTT4 0538A ATM + Lab MOVING FROM PRONE TO STANDING Scan on back. Prone w/head to L: bend L knee, move L foot + lower leg to R. Note m/m L hip joint and weight shift pelvis to R. Repeat on other side. Supine w/both legs standing: spread feet wide, move R knee inward. Note m/m L hip joint and weight shift pelvis and above. Repeat w/L leg. On belly: head turned L, both hands near face, both knees bent, tilt both legs to R. Place both hands as for a push up and lift head as you tilt legs to R. Then lift and turn head to R as legs tilt to L. Go L + R. From same position, tilt legs to R, push w/L hand and find out how this can bring you to sitting. People use different variations, e.g. coming to sit w/legs long, to side-sitting, or to sit Indian style. One can come up using extension or flexion. Try out the shown variations. Come from prone to sitting in your easy way. How would you continue to come to standing? Stop & go game: Duo: A comes up from prone to standing. B says “stop” at certain moments, when A seems less organized. Interesting game for B: catch A in the moment of transition, bringing awareness. Thursday 27 November 2014 AIFTT4 0542A ATM FLOPPING THE KNEES FROM STANDING TO SUPINE AND PRONE Scan on back: bring attention to your hip joints. Explore rolling R leg in/out, trying to locate the hip joint. Repeat on L. Standing: recapitulate the hip joints and the pelvis. Bring hands to the floor and squat D, feet spread; the heels don't need to be on the floor. Gently go F/B. Then shift weight to L and put R leg standing. Sitting leaning on hands behind: lift legs and quickly drop the feet D close to the pelvis and lift pelvis in the air. On L side: bring L heel close to sitting bone; notice opening/closing of the knee. Move L heel/toes towards the floor, then alternate. Feel how it reaches into the hip joint. Repeat on R side. Sitting leaning on hands B: legs standing. Again lift legs and drop the feet D, close to buttocks w/heels clearly on the floor. Find good place for feet and hands, fingers pointing F, so you can roll B. Lift the pelvis, head facing F, and move R knee towards the floor. Repeat w/L knee towards floor. Standing: lower yourself to squatting and gently rock F/B a little. Then roll back from the squatted frog position and come back U. Use the swinging of the legs. Squat, roll, and come back U softly. From the back, come U by way of one side. Standing: put R hand on the floor and sit D. Repeat on L. Sit D on R side and continue going D to lie on the back. Then see if you can find reversible way to come U. Standing: go D to sit and continue to lying on the belly. Then come back U. Repeat on other side. Go D, squat, place L hand on the floor and flop the knees to the side. Come back to squatting. (Based on Amherst '81) Coffee AIFTT4 0543A Discussion ATM teaching project - group 5 and closing comments Questions and comments included: When teaching ATM, how long should the pauses be? Angelica recommended telling your students why resting is an integral part of the lesson: for digesting information, for bringing a different quality of m/m, etc. She also pointed out the difference between passive relaxation and the state during a rest, which is awake, still, and potent, similar to meditation. She referred to the 'neutral' described in 'The potent self'. The biomechanics of the ATM: connecting the leg to the trunk.

AIFTT4 0545A Demo + Hands On Supine - preparing for and pushing through long leg Demo w/Deniz: Putting together all FI techniques we have worked on during this segment. You can start the way you like/think best. Because your partner is a system, you can start anywhere. Angelica followed this sequence: 1. Pick up R/L leg, feeling connection to the trunk. 2. Roll the pelvis towards 12, noticing differences L and R. 3. Roll the head, lift the shoulders. 4. At (shorter) side, find the ribs and the contours of the lower ribs. Find the contours of the pelvis on the side. Support shortening, find where it's easy. 5. Roll the pelvis to 12 again. 6. Lift the legs again. 7. Lift shoulders and connect shoulder-chest-rib to 2nd leg. 8. Shorten, support other side. 9. Roll the pelvis. 10. Lift the legs, find connection, find neutral, and find which rotation is easiest. 11. Ask about pronation at the foot. 12. Differentiate leg and pelvic m/m (standing at same or opposite side). 13. Find out if the long leg is ready to pushed through; sense if leg is ready to be a standing leg. Push through, lock the ankle and knee, and find connection to the head. 14. Repeat w/other leg. 15. On back: listen to breathing, sense cavity. Place legs standing and begin to push from the feet w/o effort, allowing m/m to happen. Open the mouth and notice m/m of the jaw and head. Feel mouth cavity, note differences L-R. Connect the m/m of opening the mouth w/pushing of the feet. Note m/m in neck and throat. Legs long: feel the larynx w/thumb and index fingers. Hum w/mouth closed/open at a comfortable tone, sensing the vibration. Note differences L-R. Larynx is a hanging structure. Move it R/L. Make a tone “Aa” again, first a low tone, then going up a little. Then “Ia”. Repeat w/chin close to chest. Note compression on throat and larynx. Repeat w/chin towards ceiling, neck arched. Note the compression.
Push from the feet, soft and small m/m. Is the throat free? One hand on forehead, other hand on chin w/thumb and index matching the jaw, open and close the mouth w/the hands. Keep lower hand still, upper hand opens the mouth. Push from feet again and release, exploring various tones, breathing, sounds. Come back to pushing w/feet. Then to reference m/m.
