II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Types of Pronouns---Absolute Possessive (5-6 minutes) General Description: Possessive pronouns are pronouns that show ownership. There are two types of possessive pronouns. 1. Weak possessive pronouns also called Possessive Determiners include my, your, his, her, their, our. They function as adjectives that modify the noun in a sentence. Example: Do you want to use my credit card? The shop is selling all their merchandise at a reasonable price. 2. Strong possessive pronouns also called Absolute Possessive include mine, yours, his, hers, theirs, ours. They stand in the place of a noun phrase and because of this they can stand on their own. Example: Your credit card is rejected. Do you want to use mine? (‘mine’ is used to mean ‘my credit card’) Their merchandise is on sale. Ours is not. (‘ours’ is used to mean ‘our merchandise’) Remember: An absolute possessive pronoun does not take an apostrophe (‘) Examples: Have you seen their new house and lot? I have seen their’s. Your presentation was great. Theirs didn’t turn out well. Is this stall your’s? Whose bag is this? It’s yours.
