Charles came to the throne in 1625. He married a Catholic, Henrietta Maria, against the wishes of Parliament. Charles also revived old laws and taxes without Parliament. The English Parliament complained in 1629. Charles dismissed them. In 1637 the Scottish decided to start fighting the King. So in 1640 Charles called the English Parliament twice to ask for money to fight Scotland. The English Parliament refused to give him the money, and then they also refused to be dismissed. Conflict broke out between Charles I and Parliament in 1642. Parliament created the New Model Army in 1645, which defeated the Royalist army at Naseby on 16th June. By 1647 Charles was losing badly against Oliver Cromwell and his New Model Army. He fled to Scotland, hoping the Scots would help him, but they sold the King back to Cromwell. Charles was found guilty of high treason and was executed in 1649. HA
