Introduction to 1:1 A 1:1 device is a required element for students in grades 5-12. At registration, parents will indicate whether their student will rent (at a cost of $146.59) or select BYOD. If BYOD, parents will need to sign the 1:1 Device Registration form which acknowledges their responsibility for any loaned devices. If BYOD, the following are recommendations for devices at the middle schools: 1. Device with keyboard which now includes a Chromebook. a. Must be Windows 7 or later; Mac 10.8 or later, Chrome OS b. Linux OS not recommended 2. USB ports (at least 1) 3. 4 GB of RAM recommended 4. Not a preferred device: IPad or tablet 5. Antivirus needed? Student can download the Avast Education version at no cost (https://www.avast.com/en-us/index). 6. A list of required and suggested applications is available at http://www.zcs.k12.in.us/apps/pages/applications_personal_devices. This includes information on how to access free downloads of Office 2016. 7. A protective case is recommended. 8. Items to consider: a. Laptop weight and size (carried all day to classes) b. Is there a warranty if the device is damaged? Is it covered under homeowner's insurance? 9. [email protected]. 10. If a problem occurs with the device at home or at school, a loaner from ZCS is available. If renting a ZCS laptop: 1. Rental laptops are Lenovo x140e which include a case (middle schools only). Velcro feet are attached to the laptop to protect from damage due to a drop. 2. Cost for rental for the school year is $146.59 and loaners are given if issues occur. 3. Students are charged if damage occurs and the cost information will be sent to parents at the beginning of the school year.
