PREPARATION: Sand the wood with fine sandpaper until smooth. Wipe with a tack cloth to remove any remaining dust. Seal with wood sealer using an old brush, sand, and wipe again. Prep each piece by base-coating with Black Gesso. This finishes the surface off on all of the sides of the blocks and adds another layer of protection for the wood. Base coat each recipe holder with Lamp Black or if you prefer the matte finish you may leave the black gesso as the base layer. Position the Rustic Diamond Background Stencil onto the front of each card holder and stencil with Winter 2
Blue. Wash Glamour Dust Tiger Orange and Glamour Dust Limelight randomly onto the stenciled area on the front. This will give your background a hint of glitter and the impression of color. Transfer the designs to the front of each card holder.
PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS: Hair and Face
Base each of the faces, including the Monster, with Hi-lite Flesh, shade with Shading Flesh, and highlight with Snow White and dry brush the cheeks and onto the forehead with Electric Pink. Base the pupil of each eye with Lamp Black and dip dot the highlight with Snow White. Base the whites of the eyes with Snow White.
The Zombie’s hair is completed using a SL and layering the following paint colors allowing each previous color to show: Electric Pink, Indian Turquoise, and Blue Violet. The Monster’s face and neck begins with the instructions used to paint the character’s faces but we will add washes of color to finish. Float thin transparent layers of Irish Moss into the shaded and highlighted areas of the face. Because Irish Moss is a transparent paint color you can float right over the shaded and highlighted areas and not lose the shaded values assuming that you are using thinned down paint. Continue layering these paint colors until you have achieved a value that you prefer. Dry brush Electric Pink into the forehead, cheeks, and jaw as is shown on the pattern photo. Base the outer edge of Monster’s eyes with Blue Violet.
Base the Vampire’s teeth with Snow White.

Watercolor Paper Preparation:
Toxic Waste:
Cut the watercolor paper 3” X 5” and transfer the designs to the front of each card.
Wet the can with clean water and thin Indian Turquoise down to a thin transparent consistency and wash it into the shaded areas of the can allowing the paint to bleed out into the wet areas. It will take multiple coats of paint to develop the shadows that you prefer. Deepen the shaded areas by washing Blue Violet into the shaded areas.
When working on watercolor paper thin your paint down to a transparent consistency and slowly build your layers. When you work on watercolor paper it is not always necessary to add additional paint colors to shade and highlight, you may if you prefer but very often I will just leave the lighter layers as a highlight and darken my shaded areas with the same paint color. When adding a wash of color wet the area with clean water you are painting first and then wash your paint color into the wet area. Lay in a thin transparent wash of color, allowing each paint layer to dry before adding a second layer. Because you are using acrylic paint your paint will become permanent once dry. You can rewet your paint as many times as necessary to build your layers. Leave some of your areas almost the white of the paper to give the impression of highlights. Remember when working in a watercolor style, always work light to dark. Base each of the black signs with Lamp Black. Write your menu choice onto the sign using a white gel pen.

Wet the bubbles, area under the can, and the toxic waste coming out of the can with clean water and wash a thin transparent layer of Irish Moss into the areas slowly building up your paint layers until you are happy with the result. Wash Neon Scorching Yellow into the lighter highlighted areas. Outline with a black permanent marker.
Zombie Swamp Slime: Base the Zombie’s face and hands with Hi-lite Flesh, shade with Shading Flesh. Dry brush the cheeks with Electric Pink. Leave the whites of the eyes the white of the paper and use a black permanent marker for the pupil of the eyes.
Using a SL line the hair with Indian Turquoise and line shade with Blue Violet. Using clean water wet the coat and legging and wash thin transparent layers of Irish Moss into the areas slowly building up the shadows with additional layers of Irish Moss, leave the highlighted areas the lighter value. Base the patches on the jacket with Napa Red. Using a SL line the leggings with Napa Red. Base the dress with thin transparent layers of Electric Pink adding additional layers of Electric Pink to shade. Base the patches with Indian Turquoise and using a SL line with Blue Violet. Thin Irish Moss down to a transparent consistency and randomly wash it into the background areas building some of the layers to develop a deeper value. Outline with a black permanent marker.
Vampire Blood: Base the Vampire’s face and hands with Hi-lite Flesh, shade with Shading Flesh, and dry brush the cheeks with Electric Pink. Using a SL line the hair with Electric Pink and line shade with Napa Red. Using clean water wet the cape area and wash thin trans-
parent layers of Santa Red into the shaded areas allowing the paint to bleed out into the highlighted areas. Add as many layers as is needed to develop the value that you prefer. Deepen the shaded areas with Napa Red. Leave the shirt the white of the paper and using a SL line the stripes with Blue Violet. Base the pants with Indian Turquoise. Wash Santa Red into the drips of blood coming down onto the black sign, and deepen the shaded areas on the drips with Napa Red. Add a transparent area of Electric Pink surrounding the drips and out into the negative space. Outline with a black permanent marker.
FINISHING: Using a black permanent marker line all of the design element details. Especially note the facial details on the characters. Varnish and enjoy. If you would like to reuse these menu cards year after year simply paint a layer of Lamp Black over the signs and label with a white gel pen keeping these to use year after year.
