APRIL STUDENTS OF THE MONTH: ELIZABETH ECKERT & SEAN MOY
The April Female Student of the Month is Elizabeth Eckert. Elizabeth is the seventeen-year-old daughter of Deborah and Donald Eckert. Her strengths are Input, Individualization, Deliberative, Adaptability, and Intellection. Elizabeth has excelled in the classroom. She was recently recognized as a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Contest. She has been named to the All “A” Honor Roll for the past three years. Elizabeth has been named the Outstanding Student of the Year in Girls’ PE, AP English III, AP U.S. History, PreAP Pre-Calculus, and Pre-AP Physics. Elizabeth has been very active in FHS numerous organizations and is a leader among her peers. She is president of the Student Choir and Treasurer of the LEOs Club. She is a member in good standing with the National Honor Society. She is a former member of the Chess Club, Student Council and the Air Force Junior ROTC. As a member of UIL One-Act Play, Elizabeth was named to the All-Star Cast at the Zone Competition and the Honorable Mention All-Star Cast at the District Competition. Elizabeth has also been successful in UIL Academics. Last year, she placed 1st in Spelling & Vocabulary and 4th in Social Studies, assisting her team in securing 1st place team honors in both events at last year’s District UIL Academic Meet. Elizabeth competed in UIL Academics again this year and is advancing to Regionals in Literary Criticism, placing 3rd in District. Elizabeth has volunteered countless hours of community service. She has gone with the student choir on multiple trips to sing at the Frank M. Tejada Veteran’s Home and Connally Memorial Hospital. She has visited participated in highway cleanup projects and Relay for Life. She worked at Garden Day with NHS and Leo’s Club, Santa’s Workshop, the Lion’s Club Palm Sunday Barbeque Dinner, the Dark Side of F Street, and the Chamber of Commerce games and tree-lighting day. She has served snacks to disabled campers at the Texas Lions Camp and served dinner at the Chamber of Commerce “Red Carpet” Dinner. She has visited room-bound veterans and ran multiple Game Days at the Frank M Tejada Veterans’ Home. She has made Easter baskets for

the Floresville ISD Social Serviced department and has made a stop-motion video advertisement for the Wilson County Library. For her efforts in the classroom, Elizabeth has already earned several scholarships. She is being awarded a $500one time Lion’s Club Diabetes Awareness Essay Scholarship and a $1,000, one-time, Texas Tech University Department of Physics C.C. and Alma K. Schmidt Memorial Scholarship. She has been awarded the Texas Tech University College of Arts and Sciences Helen DeVitt Jones Scholarship in the amount of $3,000 per year for four years and the Texas Tech University Presidential Scholarship in the amount of $6,000 per year for four years. Upon graduation in June, Elizabeth plans to attend Texas Tech University where she will major in experimental physics. The April Male Student of the Month is Sean Moy. Sean is the eighteen-year-old son of Anna and Carlton Moy. His strengths are Competition, Adaptability, Positivity, Includer and Analytical. Sean is a member in good standing with the National Honor Society. He was named to the “A” Honor Roll as a sophomore and was recognized for Perfect Attendance as a Freshman and Sophomore. As a junior, Sean was a member of the Student Council. He also served as a Link Crew Leader, mentoring incoming freshman to assist them in making a smooth transition into high school. Sean has been a member of the Mighty Tiger Band for the past four years. He has competed in Solo & Ensemble and served as the Brass Section Leader. He is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a former member of the Leo’s Club. Sean is also active in FHS athletics. He has been a member of the cross country and track teams for four years and is currently the Cross Country captain. He was a regional qualifier in both cross country and track. Sean is a former member of the baseball and basketball teams. When not busy with academics and extracurricular activities, Sean is giving back to his community. He is a four-year member and previous Co-Director of the St. Anthony Teen ACTS team. He is active in St. Anthony Youth Group and is a teen lead usher. He has assisted with masses at the nursing home and has assisted with the St. Anthony church picnic. Sean has volunteered his time cooking at Morgan’s Wonderland and has assisted with various food, clothing and hygiene product drives. He has volunteered with highway cleanup projects and helped the Floresville Athletic Booster Club stock the concession stand. As a Prince in the Peanut Festival Royal Court, Sean serves as an ambassador for the city of Floresville, representing the city at festivals across South Texas. He helped hang peanuts throughout downtown Floresville and was a blood donor. In addition to handling the demands of his academics and extracurricular activities, Sean finds time for employment. He is currently employed at Lew’s Patio & Grill. Upon graduation in June, Sean plans to attend Texas A&M University and pursue a career in either physical therapy or sports medicine.

FUTURE CHEF WINNERS Annually, Sodexo sponsors a nation-wide Future Chef Competition. At the April meeting, the Board of Trustees recognized the local winners. Pictured are: Allison Mitchell, 1st Place; Julietta Hernandez, 2nd Place; and Jiavanni Johns, 3rd Place. All contestants are given chef uniforms and all the items needed to make their own recipes. The dishes are judged based on the recipe’s healthy attributes, kid appeal, ease of preparation, originality and taste. FISD is pleased to announce that Allison Mitchell has advanced to the National Competition! We will be sharing information soon about how to help Allison win at Nationals!

INNOVATE TO EDUCATE: FHS TEACHERS Floresville High School Teachers, Mike McReynolds, Debralee Bloemer and Norbert Freckmann were recognized with the Innovate to Educate Award. Mr. McReynolds shared how the nSpire device was used as a “virtual lab” in AP Biology, providing students with access to equipment and labs that aren’t available for in a school setting. Dr. Freckmann shared the use of a device that allows him to move around the classroom and engage with students as they work together in calculus. Mrs. Bloemer explained how the FHS Student Council used the Voting4Schools.com online voting software for Class Officer, Student Council and Senior Class Favorite Elections. Using the online Dr. Sherri Bays, FISD Superintendent, with FHS Innovative software made election management very easy, Teachers, Mike McReynolds, Debralee Bloemer, Norbert improved the voting participation of all student Freckmann and FHS Principal, Sandra Galinzoga. groups and provided immediate feedback of the election results.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS ALLOTMENT AND TEKS CERTIFICATION, 2015-2016 The Board approved the IMA and TEKS Certification as required by the Texas Education Agency. Approval certifies that all instructional materials selections transmitted by the District Textbook Coordinator have been approved for use and that the instructional materials allotment will only be used for expenses allowed by law. REVISIONS TO THE HOUSE BILL 5 In accordance with HB 5, school districts must assign performance ratings for community and student engagement indicators based on locally developed criteria. During the 2013-14 school year, FISD committees developed a rubric and information was gathered to report the final outcomes. All campuses and the District earned a Recognized rating based on the criteria that was developed. Over the last several months, the committees met and recommended minor revisions to rubrics based on information that was gathered and presented last year. The Board approved the minor changes to the rubrics as presented.
AGREEMENT WITH CUERO ISD FOR THE COOPERATIVE DISCIPLINARY ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM AND THE JUVENILE JUSTICE ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM The Board approved the addition of Cuero ISD in the DAEP and JJAEP Cooperative. Cuero ISD has agreed to participate by contracting for 12 DAEP seats and 1 Support Center seat. The commitment will be for the two years.
EXTENSION OF FOOD SERVICE MANAGEMENT CONTRACT WITH SODEXO The current FSMC was signed on May 31, 2012 and allows for renewal of up to four additional one year terms. This is the third renewal under terms of the contract allowing for renewal upon agreement of both parties with a cost increase tied to the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The Board approved the extension of the current contract for the 2015-2016 school year.
INCREASE IN STUDENT MEAL PRICES FOR THE 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR Regulations of the USDA require districts to increase the amount paid for meals by 2% plus the Consumer Price Index (2.19), with a cap of $0.10. FISD will be required to increase lunch prices by $0.10 for the 15-16 school year. The 14-15 rates for meals are $2.55 for Elementary and $2.65 for Secondary lunches. Based on the calculations, the 15-16 rates will be $2.65 for Elementary and $2.75 for Secondary lunches.
RENEWAL OF MEMBERSHIP IN THE INDEPENDENT RETAINER PROGRAM WITH The Board of Trustees approved the legal services retainer with the District’s legal counsel, Walsh, Anderson, Gallegos, Green and Treviño, P.C.
