Fire Alarm Maintenance Shutdown Reactivation Procedures Environmental Health and Safety
To shutdown a fire alarm panel for maintenance or construction the following procedures shall be followed: • • • • • • • • •
The appropriate building engineer and/or electrician shall inform the Univers it y’s Environm ental Health and Saf ety O ff ic e and f ac ilit y m anager if the fire alarm will be im paired for greater than eight hours; The electrician shall notify the University Police and appropriate monitoring station (Central Station or City of Chicago’s Fire Alarm Office) to inform them of the f ir e detec tion s ys tem im pairm ent; The electrician shall deactivate the fire alarm and the city tie; T he r es pons ible par ty r eques ting the s hutdown of the f ir e alarm s ys tem s hall im plem ent a fire watch for the building or affected zones during the tim e in which the fire alarm is impaired; After com pletion of the work, the electrician shall restore all fire detection back into autom atic service; The electrical shall reset the fire alarm system in normal operation condition; The electrician shall notify the University Police to inform them of the r eac tivation of the f ire detec tion s ys tem ; The electrician shall notify the applicable monitoring station (Central Station or City of Chicago’s Fire Alarm Office) to inform them of the reactivation of the f ir e detec tion s ys tem ; and T he elec tr ic ian s hall notif y En vir onm ental Health and Saf ety th at the s ys tem has been restored for shutdowns in excess of eight hours.
