WORKPLACE CHALLENGE PACK For the Love of the Reef we will stop Australia’s largest coal and gas projects August 27 - September 9 Run by:
FORTHELOVEOF.ORG.AU
For the Love of the Reef
go without something you love to stop Australia’s largest coal and gas projects from wrecking our climate. Climate change is threatening the places we love and rely on, like the Great Barrier Reef. Yet even as communities across the globe are feeling the impacts of climate change for their homes and livelihoods, big mining companies continue to profit from making the problem worse. We are looking for work places to help us resource a powerful movement that will stand up to the dodgy mining companies and politicians that are holding us back from climate action. This August, join us and thousands of supporters who are stepping up to the challenge and will to go without something we love and raise funds to power hard-hitting campaigns that pressure our leaders for real action on climate change to protect our future and the places we love.
Join over 150,000 people taking action for climate justice with the AYCC and Seed.
Our impact Since 2015 our supporters have raised vital funds and awareness to stop Adani’s coal mine, ban fracking in the Northern Territory, while building a generation wide movement to solve the climate crisis and protect country.

Everything you need to know about the Reef and our campaigns The AYCC and Seed The Australian Youth Climate Coalition is the largest youthled organisation in Australia. We educate and empower young people to make a difference on climate change. The Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network is a branch of the AYCC, led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to make climate justice real in Australia. Together we are building a generation wide movement to solve the climate crisis and protect country.
More about the Reef For over 60,000 years Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have continued to protect their sacred Sea Country and have a vast knowledge of the Reef often shared through dream stories. The Reef is Australia’s biggest tourist destination for a good reason - it’s colourful, playful and teaming with life. 70,000 people rely on a healthy Great Barrier Reef for work, and it’s a World Heritage Area and wonder of the world that we are supposed to be looking after. But right now, the Reef is in a critical state. Back to back coral bleaching events and cyclones, fuelled by the fossil fuels that fuel global warming have damaged our Great Barrier Reef in heartbreaking ways. But there is hope. If we can make sure that coal and gas are left in the ground, we can ensure that the Reef has a fighting chance of recovering.

About the Adani coal mine Adani’s plans to build the biggest coal mine in the Southern Hemisphere in sunny Queensland. The company, which has devastated communities and ecosystems in India, is being kept alive by out of touch Federal and Queensland governments. At the very time the world has agreed to reduce carbon emissions to stop catastrophic global warming, Australian governments are eagerly pursuing Adani’s massive new coal mine. Approving the Adani project and its rail and port infrastructure would open up the entire Galilee Basin to up to 9 additional new mines of the world’s dirtiest fossil fuel. Adani’s mine won’t just be the biggest coal mine in Australia, it will be the biggest new coal mine in the world, more than five times the area of Sydney Harbour. When we need to urgently reduce carbon pollution, this mine takes us in the completely wrong direction. Together we can raise the funds needed to stop Adani’s coal mine, and fight for a clean energy future, that is fairer and more sustainable.
Where does the money go? The funds raised will power a huge, youth-led grassroots campaign to protect the Great Barrier Reef and our climate from Australia’s largest coal and gas projects.
About fracking in the NT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have looked after this land sustainably for tens of thousands of years. Most of the population of the Northern Territory are Aboriginal people. But right now the Michael Gunner Government plans to frack the NT for dangerous shale gas, putting the land, water and lives of the people who live there at risk. Right now 51% of the Territory is slated for oil and gas exploration - particularly for risky shale gas which doesn’t exist in Australia. The Northern Territory is already seeing the impacts of climate change, caused by fossil fuel projects just like this. Fracking the gas underneath just one community in the Northern Territory would release 22 billion tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions. That’s five times more than the whole of Adani’s Carmichael coal mine. It must be stopped. Water is life in the Northern Territory. In the centre, it’s hot and dry for much of the year, with most communities relying 100% on bore water. Further north, as the wet season gets shorter, bores and rivers are starting to run dry. There is not enough water in the NT to share with gas fracking companies. Yet fracking companies will be given millions and millions of litres of precious water, and permission to dump their waste by-product on land, where for 6 months of the year it will be flooded. That’s why we’ve got to work with communities across the Territory to call for a total ban on fracking in the NT. We seek to work alongside Traditional Owners and raise the voices of communities and young people who are standing up to protect country for generations to come.
The Australian Youth Climate Coalition and the Seed Indigenous Youth Climate Network are working together to stop plans to dig up the biggest coal and gas reserves in Queensland and the NT. With your support, young people across the country will run powerful campaigns to keep coal and gas in the ground and ensure a safe climate for our generation. Together, we’ll work towards our vision for a world that is kinder, cleaner, and more sustainable. You’ll allow us to train, organise and mobilise young people to resist projects and policies that threaten a safe climate future.
