CWGA NEWS By Jeanne Sobol, President With the numerous communication methods we are employing this year, we hope that our entire membership is receiving all CWGA league, tournament, clinic and social information. The Connection newsletter and calendar updates will be sent via email to all current members on a monthly basis. The newsletter, calendar updates, photos, social event recaps and other information is also posted on the CWGA Facebook page, The Crossings website, and on the bulletin board in the ladies lounge in the Crossings Clubhouse. REMINDER: We hope to see all members at the Annual Membership Meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Crossings Clubhouse. The agenda will include several bylaw amendment proposals, and the collection of annual applications and dues (cash or check only!). Please do not forward dues or completed applications to board members th until Feb 19 . Food and drink are available at the bar on a cash basis at happy hour pricing. We are fine tuning preparations for the St. Pat’s Day 2-Lady Scramble (CWGA members only) and the April 5 CWGA Invitational. We are asking for a real group effort in getting the word out on the Invitational and will be making some committee assignments for this event at the annual meeting. The expanded clinic schedule has been included again in this newsletter for your review. Note the handicap delineation for participants in each clinic series, i.e., Handicaps 25 and below will attend the A&B Player series; Handicaps 26 and above will attend the C&D Player series. These clinics promise to provide each member participant with professional instruction on the rules of the game, skill lessons to improve your score and build confidence, and prepare your body to play golf! This is YOUR golf league! You get out of it what you put into it. We encourage all members to participant in the clinics, league play, tournaments and social activities. “Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.”

SOCIAL EVENTS The annual CWGA Christmas Party was held at the home of Lise Jones. Thank you “Lilo” for hosting this event in your beautiful home! The photos on this page reflect the fun and laughter experienced by all in attendance. The Robber Santa gift exchange did not disappoint and created some great memories for years to come! ANNUAL GOLF TRIP - Due to scheduling and accommodation conflicts (dates, back-to-back tee times, lodging requirements, etc.) with previously identified locations for the annual trip, we felt we needed to reserve a location sooner than later. Therefore, acting in the best interest of the group, we have reserved accommodations at the Marigot Beach Suites oceanfront condominiums in Ocean City, MD for the weekend of August 22-24, 2014. Each condo accommodates 4 guests. There are 3 restaurants, a nightclub, spa and swimming pools on site. There is a private beach and night live entertainment on the beach also. Please visit their website at http://marigotbeachsuites.com for more info. There are many relaxing activities to consider at this location. We also have reserved 9 tee times at three different courses. All this for the low, low price of $280/person for 2 nights lodging and 3 rounds of golf!!! (See Golf Trip flier on page 9!) 2015 CRUSIE - Deb Daniel is coordinating and planning a Caribbean Cruise on the Carnival Victory for January 2015! CWGA members are invited and encouraged to sign up for the fun! She will be getting all the details together by the middle of February 2014. These Daniel planned cruises have been a blast in the past and this one sure looks like it is going to be another great success. (See Caribbean Cruise information on page 9!) We are working on several quarterly social events and details will be shared with you in the near future. The Pool Party will be hosted by Joann Allen & Bob Tucker on Saturday, July 19 @ 3 p.m. The Christmas Party is scheduled for Saturday, December 6, with time and location to be determined. Planning for the 2015 Annual Golf Trip will start in October 2014. By Natalie Dalton, Social Director

CRUISE ANYONE? By Deb Daniel I am organizing a 5-night Caribbean cruise sailing on the Carnival Victory out of Miami, Florida on January 19, 2015. Ports of call include the Bahamas, a private island experience, Turks and Caicos and then back to Miami. The itinerary promises to be fun and relaxing. I plan to secure group space through Crossroads Travel and obtain outside and balcony cabins. Pricing appears to be running in the $450 to $600 range, but final pricing is not yet available. Pricing will include port charge and taxes. Participants will be responsible for their transportation to the port in Miami, FL. Some have indicated they are interested in driving. Flights to Ft Lauderdale or Miami are pretty reasonable and Crossroads Travel can handle airline accommodations if anyone interested. I plan to pull this together by mid February 2014. Please contact me at
[email protected] or 804-347-3516 with your interest in participating or for more details. I think this will be so much fun and hope some of the CWGA members can go particularly those who have never cruised. I may even have some friends that are looking for roomies if someone doesn't have a roommate. This gives everyone some time to plan and save for it. The girls in our group have done a girls cruise 3 times now. It is a lot of fun.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT By Bambi Cocke, Player Development Coordinator
February 2014
GOLF TIP CORNER (Excerpts from “Golf Tips on Putting” by John Wagner, Demand Media)
TPI Functional Performance Clinics For each clinic, prepare to dress for movement according to weather conditions, and if we encounter rain the clinics will be held at the Crossings Pavilion. Clinics will be held on the following dates starting at 5:30 p.m.:
If you are looking to take strokes off your game, focus on putting. Putting can account for up to 40% of your score. So if you’re struggling to reach your golf goals this year, it may be time to put in more work on the putting green.
Biomechanics of Your Structural Performance Thursday, March 20 Learn the importance, and understand the practice of personal "structure" for your best swing mechanics. All bodies are different. Believing that emulating the posture, stance and swing of your favorite tour player will improve your game is a myth. Instead, find out how to utilize your own biomechanics, based on your past medical history, body type, skill level, etc.
Alignment – Proper alignment is one of the fundamentals of good putting. You want to be able to aim your putter face at your target on a consistent basis. You can make this simple by choosing an immediate target when putting. Pick out a spot a few inches in front of your ball, along the intended line, and line your putter face up to that spot. You will be more effective lining your putter up to a target that is a few inches in front of you than lining up to a target 30 feet away.
Stability Tuesday, March 25 This is a clinic full of inforamtion, demonstration and practice of the importance of Stability for your swing. You will be actively engaging in stability drills. Mobility Thursday, March 27 This clinic stresses the importance of Mobility in your game. Again, you will be actively participating in mobility drills. Exercise Prescription & Cross Training Thursday, April 3 This clinic will give you the tools to design your own personal Golf Fitness Program. This is another active clinic, so come prepared to work! Drill It In! Friday, April 11 Let's put it all together, and design the most effective plan to make the most out of our own personal functional performance.
In addition, I will be available to you as your Golf Fitness resource for personal Golf Training plans, Functional Assessments and Video Analysis.
Stroke – Watch the professionals on tour each week and you will see they make their putting stroke using a shoulder motion. Letting your shoulders swing the putter back is a key fundamental to making a good stroke. You want to feel your hands remain passive during the stroke, and let your shoulders move the putter back and forth. The motion should feel like you are rocking your shoulders. This movement allows the putter to swing on the proper path and will produce a more consistent roll on your ball. Too much hand involvement leads to inconsistent contact and can get the ball hopping in the air. As with your hands, your lower body should also remain passive during your putting stroke. Distance Control – Controlling the distance you hit each putt can make life easier on the greens. Rather than sweating over a 4-foot putt, you can tap the ball in if you have good distance control. When looking at your putt, you need to be able to determine if your putt is uphill or downhill. Uphill putts will be slower and require a firmer stroke, while downhill putts will be faster and require a softer stroke. This will help you determine how far to take the putter back. One of the fundamentals of good distance control is taking the putter back the same distance as you swing through. This creates a nice rhythm and pendulum motion.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT (continued)
WINTER EXERCISE COMPETITION by Pam Pitchford As a part of player development during the winter, CWGA has offered the second annual “Stay Fit” competition. This year’s rendition has a total of eighteen participants. We have had two alternates step up and fill in due to injuries. The competition is based on minutes of exercising and has included activities such as Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, lifting weights, running in frigid temperatures, walking with a weighted backpack to carrying their golf bags, after all this is a golf competition! Dogs have played a key role in getting minutes. (Pitchford has tried to walk her cats, but they won’t listen, that’s why they are called cats!) The captains, Pam Seay and Pam Pitchford, have pushed their teams in a spirited competition. Pam Seay’s team known as Exercise DIVAs is currently leading with 35,446 minutes with Team Havoc slowly creeping up with 34,339 minutes.
The DIVAs have challenged Team Havoc to match their team donations to a breast cancer group to be named later. This will honor all of our members who have had to contend with this disease, are currently fighting it and to all of us who know someone who has had this dreaded disease. Let us eradicate this disease in our lifetime. The competition began December 1st, 2013 and will run through April 1st, 2014. The losing team has to provide or take out the winning team to dinner. Thanks to all of you that have participated.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PLAYING WINTER GOLF, PLEASE CONTACT AELISE, JEANNE, OR NAT AS WE ARE PLAYING ON DAYS THAT ARE NOT TOO COLD (LOW 40’S) AND NO PRECIPITATION EXPECTED. SEVERAL OTHER MEMBERS PLAY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AS WELL, SO WE CAN PROBABLY HOOK YOU UP! LONG UNDERWEAR IS A MUST, BUT IT’S GOOD EXERCISE AND KEEPS YOUR GAME SHARP. A NICE WARM GOLF SWEATER DOESN’T HURT EITHER!
