Music News-
Updates: In October, the RYSS “Elite Panther Drumline” opened the Maritime Logistics Conference at Houston Community College Eastside campus. The numerous comments from many of the attendees spoke of their enjoyment of the music provided in the processional. Dr. Irene M. Porcarello, Campus President, awarded the boys $300.00 for their performance. Our Fall Talent Show featured singers, a magician, drummers, dancers and a rock band. The surprise addition of our Homecoming Alumni (2012) Mayreli Uyoa y su Grupo Deseo won the show.

In November, Rocky Pena (8th) performed with 216 Junior High boys and girls in the Region 23 Choir. Students auditioned from Alief, Houston and Katy Independent School Districts. This is the second year RYSS has been represented in this event under the direction of Mr. De La Garza who also was an adjudicator at the auditions. The music selections were difficult and included two Latin pieces on the UIL prescribed music list.
Scholarship Winner-Music
Ms. Blanca Saldana, Director of Family and Community Engagement/RYSS, honored our Veterans with a luncheon and special assembly that included our students. The High School Men’s Acapella Choir performed The National Anthem.
Mr. De La Garza performed with the Accordion Orchestra at the Wortham Theatre. The members came from Alaska, California, Florida and Texas. The Honors Retreat was sponsored by Heritage Arts Society under the direction of Shelia Lee of Pasadena, TX. They were the opening performance to an electrifying concert by the Russian Virtuosi Accordion Orchestra. Sponsored by the Houston Society of Performing Arts.
Art Club after school
Hugo Irene was presented the Cynthia Cisneros Leadership Scholarship at our annual Tejano Center Gala. Mr. Irene wrote the winning essay about the qualities of being a leader. Hugo is the Senior Vice-President of our Music Club. He is a member of the Acapella Men’s Choir, Elite Panther Drumline, and also plays guitar, drum set and piano.

Art News– In December, art students will recycle materials to create mini Christmas trees and wreaths. Students will take scraps of material and turn them into beautiful works of art.

Updates: HS art students in 4th period are going to have a critique soon. Our guest architect visited with students last week to help guide them in their artwork. Students learned how to accept guidance artistically from a professional. Mr. Grassle sat with each group and helped them develop conceptual ideas. Students are learning to put more meaning behind their works. Students also learned important life skills regarding demands in the workforce. Painting III/Independent study student (12th grader) Juliana Jurado is currently working on her art portfolio. Once her portfolio is complete, Juliana can learn to network and show possible employers her great work! Shout out to Juliana for all of her hard work and dedication to school.
