Art News-Last month, 6th grade students worked on family drawings and worked on learning new art vocabulary. Since students love associating sports and teamwork with learning each class was placed into teams and students played “trashketball”. In this game, students hurry to search for the correct vocabulary word after I finish reading the complete definition. Students get the answer in their sketchbooks and then throw a paper ball for points into an empty trashcan. I’ve had some interesting team names such as “team spicy chicken wings” and “team tamales”. Learning can be fun! If you would like to pass on 6th grade vocabulary for reading/writing, math, social studies, or science please, feel free to do so and I will include it in their activities. Sixth grade students will begin working with perspective and then will move on to fall themed work (Dia de los Muertos). High school art will create pencil drawings: Art I -will design perspective drawings, Art II -will create transformation drawings, and Art III -will select pictures to create grid drawings.

I would like to extend a thank you to our FACE Director Ms. Blanca Saldana. Ms. Saldana is currently working with senior Yaritza Portillo to create a logo for the FACE department. Opportunities such as this one give our students a sense of accomplishment and help them build career portfolios. I know that our goals are to make students feel that they have an obligation to follow higher educational opportunities because of, what they put into practice here. We can do it together. Thank you!!!! I would also like to extend thanks to both Mrs. Mayra Bontemps/TCCC Housing Programs Director and Mr. Craig Grassle from NEOS Architects. Mrs. Bontempts referred Mr. Grassle to RYSS Art. I will be meeting with this community partner on Wednesday to discuss a conceptual art project that will involve some of our H.S. art students. I am quite excited because Mr. Grassle has agreed to make a $500 dollar donation to RYSS Art that will fund our art scholarship for this school year. Partnerships rock!!!! Thank you to everyone as we work to help our students become successful! *Continue reading next page*

Tech App.- In technology applications, we learned the parts of a computer and what they do. We actually took an entire computer completely apart and looked at all of the insides. We learned what each part does, and how they fit together to make a whole computer work. We have been working on typing and using home row keys appropriately. Some students have gotten up to 35-40 wpm on average (words per minute). That’s really good. Next, we will be working with Word documents and formatting them to look nice and print properly. JROTC News-The Panther Battalion has participated in several events since school started. One event of note that was in early September was a co-ed Physical Fitness Team competition at the University of Houston Alumni Athletic Facility. The event was the 4th Annual U of H Fitness Challenge. The team of Ermin Alvarado, Eric Rodas, Ricardo Balderas and Jessica Ramirez gave their best doing push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, 50 yard sprint, and the Army Jeep pull. Eric Rodas was recognized for his push-up prowess as he placed third overall in the competition in the push-up event. The team was visited by RYSS School Board member and U of H alumnus Joe Mata who took a photo with the team.
