FIFTH GRADE CURRICULUM OUTLINE 2012/2013 TORAH STUDIES – MORAH NECHAMA ZUCKER
Tefilah: Building on what the students have learned in the previous five years of school we will continue to prepare them to master all of Shachris and Mincha. We will concentrate on the meaning and importance of davening and the power of Tefillah, through lessons on explanations of tefillah and stories. The final grade will be based on three parts which I like to call the ABC’s of davening: Attendance: Being here on time and ready to daven. = 33% Behavior: Behaving appropriately during davening. = 33% Cooperation: Following along and davening. = 33%
Kriyah - Reading: We will practice reading through the use of Tehillim. Kriyah is assessed in class when I hear the girls read the Chumash or Navi. In addition we will also be following the Kriyah lessons that are individual steps focusing on targeted areas of Kriah and dikduk. The would girls are to read for a few minutes each Hebrew homework night from any Hebrew sefer of their choice (Tehillim, Chumash or even Hebrew story book).

Chumash / Rashi: Class begins everyday with the study of Chumash. We will be learning the first three Parshios of Sefer Shemos, (Shemos, V’Eira, Bo) which discuss the story of the Egyptian exile and the eventual Exodus. In addition to knowing the translation and the story of the Chumash we will also be working on the skills needed for the learning of Rashi. The way that we learn Chumash (and Rashi) is through the use of a translation packet into which the girls fill in the missing translation of the words on the lines as we learn them. We identify Shorashim, prefixes and suffixes and build up the fluency to be able to read those pesukim confidently from inside the Chumash. It is the goal that by the end of the year the girls are able to read and translate Rashi’s directly from the Chumash. Worksheets will reinforce the lessons learned from the pesukim. We will do a lot of activities (acting out parts, projects etc.) and learn many interesting midrashim along with the content of these Parshios. Homework: After every few Pesukim there will be a worksheet with a few translation words and questions for the girls to complete in class. It is my hope to not give any written homework to the girls, rather reviewing the day’s lesson. If the girls do not sufficiently complete their class assignment at school, I may send it home for homework. Test: In order to promote retention of the Chumash, tests are given after every Perek (Chapter). The questions on the test are usually taken from the class work assignments. Final grade: is calculated based on two parts: A) Tests/ Quizes = 50% (20% Oral and 30% Written) B) Homework / Class work and participation = 50% Halacha: As in previous years, we will be learning the Halachos that pertain to the Yomim Tovim (Jewish Holidays) as each holiday approaches. Each student will receive a “fill in the blank packet” to be completed in class as we learn the information. We will also be studying Halachos that pertain to other areas of Jewish life, especially those that affect a Bas Yisroel. Test: I will assess the girls throughout the learning and there may be projects that the girls will need to complete to show that they have retained the information. I will also Page 2 of 4
give a short quiz after each unit to ensure that the girls have reviewed and remembered the information. Final grade: is calculated based on two parts: A) Homework / Class work and participation = 55% B) Tests = 45%
Navi: This year we are studying Sefer Shoftim (The book of Judges). We will mostly be learning the story line outside of the Navi, except for choice sections where I feel it would be more beneficial for the girls to look inside. After each chapter, there will be a worksheet that the girls will work on independently in class. We will BE”H finish the entire Sefer by the year’s end! We will also work on a special project describing each of the 12 shoftim individually. Final grade: is calculated based on two parts: A) Worksheets/ = 55% B) Shoftim project and classroom participation = 45% Yediot Klaliot: This is a school-wide program that gives the students the general knowledge of Jewish terms, history and customs. At the end of the year the students are tested to promote retention of this very important information. I will periodically give practice quizzes/tests throughout the year. The girls will be working on flashcards with questions and answers that will be their tool to help them remember the school’s Yedios Klalios curriculum.
