girls were excited to hear Big Ma, they missed them and had not realized that being outside that late on their own was inappropriate. Meanwhile Delphine was trying to explain to Big Ma that Cecile allowed for them to roam the streets at night on their own and she was upset. They hung up the phone and Big Ma was disappointed at their decision to go out late and call them collect. More importantly Big Ma was upset with Cecile’s decision to allow this to happen.
Delphine calls home. How do they each respond to the call? Why do they have different reactions?

They were expecting a mother. At least hug. Big Ma had no forgiveness for Cecile, and Cecile had no need for it.
Delphine comes to this conclusion because Cecile did not offer the motherly love that the girls yearned for, specifically Vonetta and Fern. Cecile did not offer social emotional support to the girls amongst meeting them and she didn’t even make them feel comfortable staying in her house. She did not feed them and made them to roam the dangerous streets in the evening to purchase food. Cecile was unapologetic for everything she had done and didn't need anyone to forgive her, even though Delphine secretly wants a big show of sorrow and regret. This is a fair conclusion.

The girls believe that Cecile is a member of the Black Panthers. They learned that Cecile was an artist and the Black Panthers needed something from her in order to fight for the Black people and Black Panthers members who were not free. They didn’t quite understand what all those people being free had to do with Cecile.

Once Vonetta and Fern hear their mother state this, they become fearful that they would be given away to the Black Panthers group. But Delphine reassured to them that that wasn’t going to happen. They all wondered what role Cecile’s artistry played in the Black Panthers Movement. The girls did not have enough background information and experience that would let them understand what was going on here.

The Black Panthers is a group that worked together to support their people. They were for the people and wanted to free the people. They were excellent speakers, as their words reminded Delphine of a rap song. They walked around with rifles and thus they were also feared. The author includes this scene to reveal to the audience that Cecile had an important role in the Black Panthers group. The author also wanted us to understand how knowledgeable Delphine was about the current events and movements that occurred during the time period. We also see that Cecile was also portrayed as a selfish argumentative person until she was convinced to exploit her talent to defend the people. We learned that she did have an unselfish stable side to her. The author also builds mystery and suspense here and helps us see it through the children's eyes, who don't
