The Westfield State University Department of Music is pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Choral Artist in Residence guest series will be held October 20th – 21st, 2016 with special guest clinician Sydney Guillaume. The highlight of the two-day event will be the High School Choral Festival on Friday. Area high school ensembles will perform two or three prepared pieces (10-minute maximum for performance), and receive a clinic with Sydney Guillaume. Ensembles will also participate in a combined Festival Chorus ensemble performing two selections with the Westfield State University choral students and conducted by our guest. The combined selections this year are listed below: 1. Sicut Cervus by Giovanni Palestrina http://www1.cpdl.org/wiki/images/7/70/137.pdf 2. Kanaval by Sydney Guillaume, conductors can purchase it ($2.65 each) at this direct link: http://sydneyguillaumemusic.com/portfolio-items/kanaval. Also provided on the website is a pronunciation guide (written and audio link), IPA for text, and a performance. An evening concert will conclude the day on Friday, October 21, 2016 beginning at 6:30pm on Dever Stage. The concert will feature individual ensemble performances by each school, as well as the Festival Chorus, no admission will be charged for this event. Educators and students are also invited to attend any of the free lectures presented by our guest both on Thursday and Friday. Interest session topics include the following: How to sustain yourself as a composer, Transforming the Cultural Traditions of Haiti, and Music of Sydney Guillaume (lecture – concert). A complete schedule with times and locations is included in this application packet. Specializing in the music of Haiti, our guest, Sydney Guillaume is a Haitian American composer (primarily choral works), singer and conductor. His choral compositions, most with original poetry by his father Gabriel T. Guillaume, have fostered an awareness of the beautiful Haitian culture and continue to serve as an ambassador for his native country. His compositions are known to be intricate, challenging yet highly spirited and have been praised by the Miami Herald for their “impressive maturity and striking melodic distinction.” Sydney’s repertoire has been performed by the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) conferences as well as international festivals such as the World Choir Games and Ireland’s Cork International Choral Festival.
Educators are encouraged to bring their ensembles and are invited to attend all of the interest sessions both on Thursday and Friday. Participating choirs from area high schools are asked to submit the attached application(s) by Friday, October 7th. Interest sessions are free to the public, the cost for participating choirs the Friday Choral Festival is $125 for the first choir and $75 for each additional choir.
