It was all treats at Aiea Elementary on Halloween
From the Principal's Desk Aloha Parents! November is a month when we are reminded of all the things we can be grateful for. Here is what I am especially thankful for this year. • The formation of our new Parents Group that recently hosted the Halloween Family Night and initiated our first fundraiser. • Aiea Elementary students who come to school each day eager and excited to learn. • Aiea Elementary parents who get their children ready for school each morning, no matter how hectic it is, and then find time to come to a Family Night! • Aiea Elementary teachers who strive to spark the love of learning in their students. • Aiea Elementary counselors who always provide that extra support our students need to be successful. • Aiea Elementary office staff who always stop what they are doing to help a child or parent in need. • Our Aiea Elementary health aide who is always ready to soothe a sick or injured child. • Our new STEM Coordinator, “Mr. H” who is helping our tireless librarian, Ms. Ishida get our children involved in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. • Our PSAP ladies who make sure every new child on campus has someone to turn to. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank some people and organizations that have been exceptionally supportive of our school. Without their generosity, we might not be able to provide those extras that help our students feel special. At our last assembly, we honored the following: • The Pearl Harbor Rotary Club for their generous donation of book fair coupons for all of the third graders as well as their on‐going support of our library and students. • St. Elizabeth’s Church which has initiated a Food Pantry and will be sponsoring a Christmas luncheon on Saturday, December 15th, in our cafeteria. • The Aiea Methodist Church which has “adopted” us and provided mentors for our students as well as clean‐ up support throughout the years. • The Assistance League of Hawaii which donated a free Aiea T‐shirt to each and every one of our students. Mahalo to all!
Thanks for all your SUPPORT!

Tip of the month: 3. Eat at least a total of 5 cups of fruit and vegetables a day. $ Money-Saving Suggestions $ Choose fresh fruits and vegetables when they’re in season, such as turnip and collard greens, cherries, strawberries and peaches in July and tomatoes, kale, apples and watermelon in September. A farmers’ market or a corner fruit and vegetable market is a good bet for good prices.

Attention Parents Grades 3-6 During the 2012 – 2013 school year, all students in grades 3-6 will take the Online Hawai‘i State Reading and Mathematics Assessments. Students in grades 4 will also take the Online Hawai‘i State Science Assessment..
When will the assessments be administered? Aiea Elementary School will be administering the Hawaii State Assessments (H.S.A.) three times during the school year. Your child will have three opportunities to take the assessments; however only their highest score will be the official score recorded. The testing schedule is as follows: 1st Opportunity November 5 – November 30
2nd Opportunity February 4 – March 1
3rd Opportunity April 15 – May 10
IMPORTANT: Please make sure that all doctors’ appointments or other planned absences are not taken during your child’s testing week. When will families get the results of the assessments? Your family will receive a paper family score report with your child’s final scores at the beginning of next school year (2013-2014) during the month of August. How can I help my child prepare for the assessments? You can best help your child prepare by providing consistent support that will help your child do well in school every day. • Make sure your child gets 8-10 hours sleep each night • Eats a nourishing breakfast every morning • Complete homework • Attend school every day. The Hawai’i State Assessments measure how well your child is meeting the comprehensive Hawai’i Content and Performance Standards that help guide your child’s daily instruction throughout the school year. You can also help your child become familiar with the types of questions he or she might be asked to answer by reviewing the Parent Information Booklet that was sent home in October or by visiting www.alohahsap.org to practice answering additional sample questions.
Habits of Mind Comes to Aiea Elementary School! The Habits of Mind is a Complex Area wide initiative to create thoughtful school environments in which everyone can experience habits of success by providing students with knowledge every student should have to become a leader. One of the sixteen Habits of Mind will be introduced to our students each quarter. The first Habit of Mind our students learned last quarter was Listening to Others with Understanding and Empathy. This Habit means to understand others, devote mental energy to another person’s thoughts and ideas, and to make an effort to perceive another’s point of view and emotions.
Listening to Others with Understanding and Empathy: People who DO this: • • • •
Listen to others without interrupting. Can reword what the person has said in their own words. Detect how other people are feeling by the way they speak and behave and respond appropriately. Are able to ask sensible questions to try and get a better understanding of what the person is saying. Are able to see the situation through the other person’s eyes despite how they personally feel.
Listening to Others with Understanding and Empathy: People who DO NOT do this: • • • • • • •
Are rehearsing their next comment. Filter and only pay attention to ideas with which they agree or disagree. Judge the comments as unqualified or unworthy. Over identify and relate everything to their own experience. Give advice with a ready solution. Derail and deflect the conversation to other issues. Placate and agree with everything to avoid confrontation.
Here are some strategies you can do at home to incorporate this Habit of Mind: ¾ Identify people who show the Habit of Mind in the community. ¾ Identify times when someone is caught listening to others with understanding and empathy.
Habit of Mind for Second Quarter is: Managing Impulsivity Managing Impulsivity means: Take your time; think before acting, remain calm, thoughtful and deliberative.
Managing Impulsivity: People who DO this: • • • • • • • •
Set clear goals Describe each step to be taken to achieve goals. Monitor progress. Use wait time as an opportunity to think through a problem. Attend to results of trial‐and‐error efforts to determine a course of action. Pay attention to what is working. User strategies for self‐management, such as note taking. Proceed with caution.
Managing Impulsivity: People who DO NOT do this: • • • • • • •
Work in a random fashion. Are unclear about goals. Cannot state outcomes or steps in achieving a goal. Rush into situations without thinking first. Are easily distracted. Do not attend to the task. Are spontaneous, reckless, and often irresponsible.
Here are some strategies you can do at home to incorporate this Habit of Mind: ¾ Point and refer to times when managing impulsive behavior was managed appropriately. ¾ Have students look for members in the family and community who are managing their impulsivity.
