Pennies for Patients Student Council at Aiea Elementary is actively sponsoring the Pennies for Patients donation drive for our third year. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) School & Youth Program, Pennies for Patients is a service learning program that gives school children the opportunity to learn how valuable their efforts can be to finding a cure for people battling cancers like leukemia. Over 12 million students across the United States support this program and we hope you will too! The donation drive will continue until April 27. You can donate more than pennies…Nickels, dimes, quarters, bills and checks* are graciously accepted. Just put your donation in the personal collection box sent home with your child and encourage your friends to donate also. We are having a friendly competition for a class party to the homeroom that collects the most donations. This week we have a new class in the lead for collections...Miss Zeprun's Kindergarten, followed by Mrs. Keawe's 3rd grade, and then Ms. Bajet's 4th grade. Will your classroom be the new leader in collections next week? This is not mandatory, however we do hope each of our students can donate just a few cents and gain the hands-on experience that teach caring, respect, and sharing with others. In 2010, Aiea Elementary collected $1,170.14 and in 2011 year your generous donations brought in $1,255.02…wow! We have presently collected over $750.00 and are a little over half way to our goal. Can we beat last year's total? Any questions may be directed to Cathy Ebisui at 4837200 x251. *Checks may be made payable to LLS (or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society). Thank you for your support of this very worthy program
Thank you to all our school families and staff who help us keep our students safe every afternoon when school lets out for the day. Sometimes we have a little traffic coming in and out of the parking lot…we thank you for your patience while waiting to pick up your child. It takes safety from each one of us to keep all of our students safe as they leave our school !
TARDY REMINDERS: If your child arrives after the second morning bell (7:55 a.m.) he/she is tardy. Have your child get a tardy slip from the office before going to class.
Dear Parent(s) and/or Guardian(s), “Keeping Kids Healthy Program” at Aiea Elementary. In the “Keeping Kids Healthy program” we will teach your child how to be healthy. Taught by the counselor and Public Health, this program includes direct education promoting “healthy eating” and staying active. (In addition, weekly weigh-ins will be performed by the School Health Aide along with blood pressure checks) - Don't know if you want to say that we did for only 3rd grade. This 6-week program will be held once a week for 20-30 minutes starting April 2012. Since parents play an important role in their children’s health and well being, we are encouraging parents also to get involved in the “Keeping Kids Healthy Program”.

Canned Food Drive for Hawaii Foodbank April is the month for the Hawaii Foodbank Canned Food Drive. Our school will be participating along with most of the other schools and businesses on Oahu to help families in our communities. The food drive will be for 1 and ½ weeks, from April 11 – April 20. We will deliver the canned goods to the foodbank on Saturday April 21st. If every student and adult in our school donated one can of food, we would meet our goal of over 400 cans! Please bring a can of food to your classroom to be picked up by Student Council members. Let’s do our share to help our community Thank you for your support, Aiea Elementary Student Council
Justin Peapea’s painting, “An American Memorial” is selected for exhibition The Leeward/Central District’s 24th annual MOA Museum of Art Children’s Painting Contest was recently held at Pearl Ridge Center. Having his painting of the Arizona Memorial selected for exhibition honored Aiea Elementary’s very own Justin Peapea. Justin’s painting was selected as one of only 35 honored out of over 400 entries. The opening of the exhibition was held on March 10th at Pearlridge Center to honor all of the winners and present them with a bag of goodies for their efforts. The proud Peapea family was in attendance along with Mr. And Mrs. “Mac”. All of us could not have been more proud of Justin!
The thirty-five paintings will be on display at the State exhibition from May 26 – June 2, 2012 at the Honolulu Museum of Art (formerly known as Honolulu Academy of Arts) Linekona Art Center. The museum is located at 2411 Makiki Heights Drive. Other statewide district selected paintings along with thirty of this year’s MOA International Children’s Painting Contest winners from Japan will also be exhibited. The opening ceremony will be on May 26, at 10:00 a.m. This exhibition will be well worth seeing, not only because it will have winning paintings from throughout the state, along with paintings from around the world but will also feature three paintings that are from children from the earthquake devastated Tohoku, Japan. The stories of their paintings were recently reported on the NHK Newscast. Amazing how art helps them cope with what has happened to them. I strongly encourage teachers, parents and staff to see the exhibit. It is the museum’s belief, as well as my own, that art has the capacity to raise consciousness. You will be delighted to see our young artist’s visual expressions of joy and wonder. Don’t miss this opportunity of see “Beauty Through The Eyes of Our Children”. Mr. Mac would like to thank the Rotary Club of Pearl Harbor for their ongoing financial and moral support of the art’s program at Aiea Elementary.
