What . . . How Do ?
Write a five to seven paragraphs essay on the religious, political and socio-economic implications of the Bubonic Plague as a pandemic; distinguish between people’s religious and social belief systems and concerns during the Middle Ages.
* Conduct research: find evidence from primary resources (textbook, internet-baseddocuments, written texts - library books). * Have a thesis statement, go in depth (analyze, exemplify, conclude). * Effectively communicate your opinion - supported by facts, reasons, quotes. Find strong, clear arguments to support your thesis. Exemplify. * Identify then refute (prove wrong, false, incorrect) any opposing arguments or statements in order to make your own argument look stronger. * Historically, the ‘plague’ ended feudalism as a political system. Conclude on this idea.
Statistically, scientifically and medically, the Bubonic Plague pandemic and the affliction of AiDS are totally different. However, they do resemble from a SOCIAL perspective (because of the interactive factor).
* Compare and contrast them from a social point of view. Look for changes in ideologies over time: beliefs/doctrines – punishment brought upon people for their sins vs. realistic causes of diseases (carried out by fog, airborne bacteria; misconceptions – blaming the plague on the positions of the planets vs. hygiene, poverty, malnutrition, blood transmitted pathogens; prejudice – persecution of lepers, gypsies and Jews vs. discrimination against homosexuals, drug-addicts, the sick themselves. * Create a CHART comparing and contrasting the social aspect. Use Inspiration program: File - Open Template - Thinking Skills folder (middle column) - Venn Diagram or Compare. Add pictures (see sample box - top left). ***Other requirements: have a “title” page, do not plagiarize, edit, explain sophisticated terms if any; find colored, adequate pictures, text-wrap them; cite your resources.
Option: - PowerPoint with special effects, transitions and sound; or an i-Movie. Why Do ? … to map and analyze the spread of the bubonic plague; describe its impact on global population (7. 6. 7).
