October 31, 2016 Dear HCSS families, This purpose of this letter is to clarify some of the health policies here at HCSS. It is part of our mission to provide a safe learning environment for our students, to aid them in reaching their full potential. A safe environment includes minimizing the spread of contagious illness. If your child is diagnosed with a contagious illness, for example conjunctivitis (pink eye) or strep throat, there are policies to follow to protect everyone at HCSS. When a student or staff member is diagnosed with pink eye or strep throat, they must be on the medication for 24hours prior to returning to school. This policy over-rules a note from a Doctor saying a student may return to school. There must be 24 hours of treatment. This also may apply to other contagious illness such as certain rashes, head lice, and other skin or respiratory conditions. If your child has the influenza virus, or even a common cold or virus with flu like symptoms, they must be symptom free for 24 hours without the use of symptom relieving medications. This means any fever, vomiting, or diarrhea must be resolved for 24hours without the use of medication, prior to return to school. If a student is in school and is found to have any of the above symptoms they will be sent home. This includes students with a fever above 100.1, a student who has vomited and/or had diarrhea (without a known noncontagious condition), or a student with symptoms of pink eye, contagious rash, or head lice. These students will not be allowed to return the following day until 24hours of treatment (for pink eye, strep, etc.) or 24hours being symptom free without medication (fevers, vomiting, and diarrhea etc.). Students with head lice must be nit free to return to school. In closing, I would like to inform you that we have had 3 documented cases of pink eye in the school since Thursday. Please encourage your children to wash their hands often, especially if they touch their face or use the bathroom. If your child has symptoms of pink eye which include a red itchy irritated eye and sticky drainage, please contact your healthcare provider for evaluation. Thank you very much for your attention to these matters. Together we will give our students a safe learning environment to reach their full potential. Respectfully, Kelly a Gemme BSN RN BC School Nurse Hampden Charter School of Science

FOUR WAYS TO DEAL WITH STRESS
10 QUICK Tips for reducing stress 1. Exercise everyday 2. Get enough sleep 3. Eat healthy foods 4. Talk about your problems
1. Positive Self-Talk We all talk to ourselves; sometimes we talk out loud but usually we keep self-talk in our heads. Self-talk can be positive ("I can

do this" or "Things will work out") or negative ("I'll never get well" or "I'm so
6. Break large tasks
stupid"). Negative self-talk increases stress. Positive self-talk helps you calm

down and control stress. With practice, you can learn to turn negative thoughts into positive ones. 2. Emergency Stress Stoppers There are many stressful situations— at work, at home, on the road, and in public places. We may feel stress because of too much work, poor communication, and everyday hassles like standing in line. You may need different emergency stress stoppers for

stressful situation & handle it later Don't be afraid to say "I'm sorry" if you make a mistake 3. Finding Pleasure When stress makes you feel bad, do something that makes you feel good. Doing things you enjoy is a natural way to fight off stress. Try to do at least one thing you enjoy every day for 15 minutes. Take up a hobby, new or old Read a favorite book, short story, magazine, or newspaper Have coffee or a meal with friends Exercise and/or Listen to music 4. Daily Relaxation Relaxing is more than sitting in your favorite chair watching TV. To relieve stress, relaxation should calm the tension in your mind and body. Some good forms of relaxation are yoga, tai chi (a series of slow, graceful movements) and meditation. Like most skills, relaxation takes practice. Deep centered breathing is a form of relaxation you can learn and practice at home.
