AP Biology Summer Assignment 2015-2016 Introduction: Welcome to AP Biology! If you are holding this paper you are one of the lucky ones who are taking AP Biology. Over the course of the next school year, you will learn a tremendous amount about biology. Yay! I have to warn you: this is not the world’s easiest class; it is a little like drinking from a fire hose; however, I will personally make sure that, if you give it your best, you will not be disappointed. Do not be intimidated! If you want to succeed in AP biology, you will. Do not get me wrong, success in the class will take work, but I will provide you with all of the tools necessary to be successful. This course is designed to be equivalent to a two-semester introductory biology course (8 credit hours) and an introductory biology lab (3 hours) that are usually taken in the first year of college. (Most AP courses in high school only give 3 credit hours.) My goal is to prepare you for taking an upper division college biology during your first year of college. AP Biology will be a rewarding experience, but it will also be challenging. I know what you are thinking….why a summer assignment? AP Biology is a rigorous, yet manageable and rewarding class. In order to meet the demands of the curriculum, it is necessary for you to complete some work before you come back in August. The College Board Objectives outlined for AP Biology are broad and deep. We have the months of August-May to complete 56 chapters in the textbook prior to AP testing in May. In order to cover the ENTIRE textbook, we must dive into our learning during the summer months. First, you need to register for the course website and the book website. The step-by-step instructions are below. If you have any problems, feel free to stop by and ask me or email me at
[email protected]. Second, you will need to write a letter of introduction and post it to the discussion thread on schoology.com. Third, you will read and fill out reading guides for chapters 1-4. Then, you will do online activities for each chapter and then take a timed quiz. These will be daily grades and quiz grades respectively. During the first week of school, we will have a test over the first four chapters, so be sure to read in depth. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me (
[email protected]) or stop by my room (2260) and talk with me. I look forward to working with you during the next school year and I hope you have a wonderful summer break!! Sincerely, Ms. Christie Caldwell
