AP Biology Summer Assignment 2016 Dear AP Biology Students, Welcome to AP Biology! I look forward to seeing your familiar faces in my class for the 2016-17 school year. AP Biology is a rigorous, but rewarding course. The work will be challenging, but we will have fun doing it! Advanced Placement courses are college-level classes that you take in high school. AP Biology is the equivalent of the two-semester introductory biology course you would take in your first year of college. At times the course load may seem overwhelming, but I promise that I will never ask more of you than I am willing to give. We are in this life science journey together! So let’s get started! J Throughout the course, we will explore many topics in biology that are all related to four major recurring ideas called “Big Ideas.”
The Four Big Ideas of AP Biology Big Idea 1: The process of evolution drives the diversity and the unity of life. Big Idea 2: Biological systems use free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, reproduce, and to maintain dynamic homeostasis. Big Idea 3: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit, and respond to information essential to life processes. Big Idea 4: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties.
I know that summer and assignment are two words that should never be together; however, I want you to be ready on day one for the eventful year ahead. Within this “Welcome/Summer Assignment 2016-17 Packet,” you will find detailed instructions to complete four assignments. The first three assignments are simply a list of tasks you will need to complete to prepare for the course such as establishing communication, registering for your online textbook and gathering the items on your supplies list. The fourth assignment involves collecting examples of biological words and concepts through photography. An optional review assignment is also included. All other assignments are mandatory. Due dates are listed below and at the top of each assignment page. Included in this packet are the following documents: Done? (If so, add a checkmark below)
