2012–2013 ANNUAL REPORT
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD
For over five years, Tulsa Children’s Museum has operated as a “museum without walls” with outstanding community support. And because of that support, TCM was able to transform the defunct Owen Park Recreation Center into Discovery Lab and open its doors on May 25, 2013. The community came out in droves to experience this new museum that is “unique to Tulsa and uniquely Tulsa.” Discovery Lab takes the very best in children’s museum/discovery center industry practices and turns it on its ear by taking the ordinary and making it extraordinary. Who could imagine… a twenty-four foot extension bridge made out of everyday packing tape; a larger-than-life pin wall made from cardboard; or a robot made from a berry basket and offset motor. In this exciting time of discovery, we wish to offer a heartfelt thanks to all of our supporters who recognized the importance of play in learning and came along for this exciting ride. This report highlights the road to Discovery Lab and the impact on the community in our first month of operations. We hope that you will continue to support our mission to inspire children, connect families, and build community through exploration, exhibits, programming, and play.
Sincerely,
Raymond J. Vandiver

MISSION To inspire children, connect families, and build community through exploration, exhibits, programming, and play.
Tulsa Children’s Museum (TCM) was formed in 2007 by a group of committed parents and professionals with the shared goal of establishing a not-for-profit children’s museum to serve the greater Tulsa community. TCM has operated as a “museum without walls” bringing its unique programming to the community through schools and community events until Discovery Lab opened.
RELEVANCE
PLAYFUL LEARNING
ROAD TO DISCOVERY The opening of Discovery Lab over Memorial Day weekend, 2013, was an unmitigated success. In just three short days, well over 2,000 visitors came to experience Discovery Lab and, based on their comments, they left happy and already planning their next visit. On the road to opening, the board and staff vision for Discovery Lab was a museum that would be different from anything they had seen before. A place where all the best practices in hands-on, informal learning could take root and evolve in an organic way. Tulsa Children’s Museum (TCM) has been different from the beginning by taking a community-led approach to meet the needs unique to Tulsa. Nowhere else in Tulsa can you find a hands-on, experiential, informal learning center like the concept for Discovery Lab. As ideas and exhibits began to take shape, it became apparent that this was going to be something special—something “unique to Tulsa and uniquely Tulsa.” Renovations on the building began in earnest in November, 2012, with exhibit construction in tandem off-site. In just six short months, the transformation was almost complete and TCM held its inaugural fundraising gala at Discovery Lab. Tables and tickets sold out in under a month for this celebration of what we hoped would become a community cornerstone. Upon opening in May, 2013, Discovery Lab did not disappoint. Close to 3,000 people came through the museum on opening weekend and numbers have been off the charts for both attendance and membership sales since then. As we continue through our first year of operations, we strive to provide a new experience at every visit—whether that is a new exhibit or fresh programming and new materials to manipulate in a permanent exhibit.
