Annual Report 02
Dear Friends, When asked what one word best describes Federation, we suspect most folks would quickly say “fundraising”. While we agree, we also see things a little differently. Our one word would be… community. If Fundraising is the “how”, Community is the “why” – why we work so hard to raise millions of dollars every year; why our donors consider Federation to be a top Jewish priority; and why Federation’s impact is so great. Federation’s Strategic Objectives are framed around our four core areas of community impact: Philanthropy, Community, Israel, and Jewish Identity. The Annual Campaign is the engine that fuels all the others, the means by which everything else gets done. And it’s thanks to you, our loyal community of donors, that we are able to fulfill our promise to the community year after year, year in, year out. While the Annual Campaign is our constant, our remaining strategic objectives continually evolve to reflect our community's needs at any point in time. Providing financial stability for our agencies? Federation is there. Looking for new and unique ways to engage in Jewish life? Federation’s got it covered. Finding creative and collaborative solutions for 21st century Jewish challenges? Federation’s on-point. The pages of this Annual Report will show you how. Our hand is on the pulse of Jewish life today and our eye is on the work needed to insure vibrant Jewish life for tomorrow. Federation's distinctive role as community builder, planner and convener enables and empowers Jewish life to nurture, grow and thrive in Charlotte and around the world. REACH

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY
OVERSEAS PARTNERS COLLABORATION LETS US DO MORE AND DO IT BETTER. One of the primary ways that Federation expresses its solidarity with Jews all over the world is through partnerships with organizations dedicated to caring for the needs of klal yisrael, our fellow Jews. Through relationships with organizations including Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and World ORT, Federation demonstrates global responsibility and extends assistance to those living overseas.
JEWISH FEDERATIONS OF NORTH AMERICA (JFNA)
Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) represents and supports 153 Jewish Federations and over 300 Network communities, which raise and distribute more than $3 billion annually for social welfare, social services and educational needs. The Federation movement, collectively among the top 10 charities on the continent, protects and enhances the well-being of Jews worldwide through the values of tikkun olam (repairing the world), tzedakah (charity and social justice) and Torah (Jewish learning).
JEWISH AGENCY FOR ISRAEL (JAFI)
The Jewish Agency for Israel is a humanitarian organization that strives to build a connected and committed global Jewish community. It has been pivotal to Israel’s remarkable story of immigration, renewal and growth. JAFI, a driving force behind the unique bond between Jews worldwide and in Israel, helps tens of thousands of people each year reconnect with their spiritual and cultural heritage through a multitude of programs. Charlotte’s longstanding relationship with JAFI is personified through our community Shaliach and our P2Gether Partnership with Hadera.
AMERICAN JEWISH JOINT DISTRIBUTION COMMITTEE (JDC)
The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee provides aid to millions of Jews around the world. JDC reaches out to Jews in distress, offers relief for Jews in need, restores and strengthens Jewish community life and helps Israel address the social service needs of its most vulnerable populations. Programs in 70 countries touch all segments of the Jewish population from infants to elderly, secular to religious, healthy to disabled.
WORLD ORT: ADVANCEMENT THROUGH EDUCATION AND TRAINING
ORT works for the advancement of Jews and other people through training and education. Through international cooperation programs, ORT supports non-sectarian economic and social development in under-developed parts of the world by providing vocational training and technical assistance.

COMMUNITY IMPACT: CREATIVE SOLUTIONS BOARD DEVELOPMENT: Recognizing the importance of strong Boards to the sustainability of our community, the Jewish Federation hosted workshops for more than two dozen Jewish agencies on how to build and develop High Performance Teams and how to Strive Toward Organizational Greatness, facilitated by industry expert, Scott Asalone.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT: Developing our next generation of leaders has always been a top priority for the Jewish Federation, and 2015 was no exception. We kicked off our 10th class of the Bernstein Leadership Group, adding 32 new leaders to the hundreds of BLG alumni serving in volunteer leadership roles throughout our community. Embodying the vision and spirit of community, the Federation galvanized the leadership of Shalom Park to pay tribute to the past, present and future of Shalom Park. The first-ever Celebration of Leadership served to recognize and pay tribute to our community, its leaders, and our collective impact.
Bernstein Leadership Group
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: Federation continues to plan for and meet the needs of Charlotte’s evolving Jewish community through its Negotiated Grants. A new tier to Federation’s grant process, Negotiated Grants enable Federation to respond quickly and effectively to issues, opportunities and strategic priorities that periodically emerge in our community.
JEWISH IDENTITY: Developing Jewish identity in all of its various forms is another top priority for the Jewish Federation. Through our history, traditions, shared experiences, Israel, and tikkun olam, Federation is proud to offer opportunities for meaningful connections. Engaging celebrated Jewish educator Avraham Infeld, Federation hosted lunches and workshops to help us shape our own definition of what it means to live a Jewish life.
Celebration of Leadership
STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS
A COMMITMENT TO OUR FUTURE The needs of our Jewish community won’t end in five years, in twenty-five years or in one hundred years. But you can help future generations of Jews meet the challenges of the future. A planned gift to the Jewish Federation will extend a helping hand to your children, your grandchildren and future generations of Jews by strengthening the Jewish Federation’s ability to support those services and organizations, values and traditions that you have supported and found crucial to Jewish life. Whatever your annual gift amount, you have the ability to preserve your contribution as a permanent legacy to the Federation. Please join us in making a provision to ensure the future of the Jewish people. The obligation is ours. The options are yours. Thank you to all of our loyal donors who demonstrated their philanthropic leadership by establishing legacy gifts to help future generations of Jews meet the challenges of the future.
