Arrupe Jesuit High School
Annual Report 2014-2015
the school that works in denver!
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends & Family, As we find ourselves busy in the early months of our thirteenth year, I’m pleased to take a moment to reflect back on the many blessings of 2014-2015. Within the following pages, you’ll read stories of everyday life here at Arrupe Jesuit as well as see the many generous individuals and organizations that join together to ensure stories like these continue in coming years. At our Mass of the Holy Spirit in August, I encouraged our students to let the fire inside them roar, to use their heat and passion to be men and women for others each and every day. I humbly thank you for sharing your heat and passion with Arrupe Jesuit. It is because of the fires that burn in each of us that our students are empowered as leaders in their communities, forever changing the course of their lives. “When each of you were born, you were born with a fire inside of you, a fire that burned physically, intellectually and spiritually. Physically, you are warm, your body radiates heat, the fire inside keeps you going even when it’s cold outside. Intellectually, you are given a brain, eager for knowledge. It’s what brought us to the moon, allows us to cure diseases, to explore every inch of our planet. And in your heart. A fire exists in your heart to do good in the world, to carry out God’s will, to do more with your life. When you met with faculty and staff to apply to Arrupe Jesuit, we didn’t just pick the smartest kids in Denver. Yes, some of you are very smart, all of you are smart in your own way, but that’s not why we picked you. We picked you because of the fire we saw burning inside you, the spark that you showed leading the way, driving you each day to be your best. That is what we are all here for and what we are all called to do – go out and set the world on fire.” Blessings,
In my three years at Arrupe, I have grown. I see the world around me in a different light; I have a passion for justice. I give back and strive to give even more to my community. What I believe I will take away from Arrupe is more than just a great experience, but a completely different mentality that I did not have entering the school. Since joining Mock Trial freshman year, I have had a growing interest in law. Because of my time working with companies that give back and my time working with City Attorneys, I now wish to be a Public Defense Attorney – an attorney appointed by the city to those who cannot pay for their own attorney; an attorney who sees good, and defends it rather than persecutes it. Fr. Pedro Arrupe said “Today’s prime educational objective must be to form men-and-women-for-others.” Arrupe Jesuit has made me into a man for others. – Leo Lopez, Class of 2017

Our students are given an opportunity like no other in the State of Colorado. They gain valuable work experience through the Corporate Work Study Program, something that cannot be learned in the classroom. AJHS sophomore, Irene Gonzalez, had the opportunity of a lifetime this fall while working at Catholic Health Initiatives. Irene joined Kevin Lofton, CEO of CHI, and Chris Lowney, Board Chair of CHI, for lunch and held her own by answering questions about Arrupe Jesuit and her experience as a CHI employee. Irene was then invited to participate in the Catholic Health Initiatives board meeting and, according to her supervisor, she knocked it out of the park! She truly wowed the entire CHI Board of Trustees with her poise and ability to answer questions in front of an important group of leaders in the Denver business community.
Way to go, Irene!

CWSP PARTNER SPOTLIGHT One of Colorado’s oldest and most respected law firms, Jones & Keller is a pillar of the Corporate Work Study Program at Arrupe Jesuit High School. For many years, Jones & Keller has believed in our mission and invested in our youth. AJHS students file, scan documents, and much more on their work days inspiring numerous students over the years to pursue a career in law. Beyond their deep commitment to our students in their office, Jones & Keller also generously supports our two biggest fundraising events of the year, Magis Night & the AJHS Golf Invitational. Ten years running, their support as a benefactor demonstrates the further power of their partnership.
“We are honored and proud to be a part of the Arrupe mission, and we have benefitted greatly from the Arrupe students over the years.” – Reid Godbolt, President
Jose Madrid, AJHS Class of 2010 & Georgetown class of 2014, has begun the last step of his educational dreams – law school at Georgetown University! In a recent email (including this photo of him on the way to his first day of classes), he shared: “It’s a challenge, but nothing I can’t handle. The next 3 1/2 years will be hard, but I’ve had some training in the area of ‘hard’. In my mind, I’ve been going to school and working for the last 8 years of my life. The bar just keeps getting higher, isn’t that what you would tell us? Gracias Arrupe.”
Michelle Ramirez, AJHS class of 2010 & Regis University class of 2015, is one of Denver’s newest Emergency Room nurses at University of Colorado Hospital! Just as we hope for all our graduates, Michelle is back serving the community that helped her get to where she is today.
