Governor Jerry Brown has announced plans for the re-opening of California Trade and Investment Offices in China. The new Offices will provide California companies – especially small- and mediumsized enterprises who lack global resources – with business contacts throughout China. The Offices will also support the recruitment of Chinese Direct Foreign Investment (FDI) into California, strengthening existing ties between the world's 2nd and 8th largest economies.
China is one of the world's fastest growing economies over the past decade, and its efforts to reform and modernize have helped transform China into a large trading economy. China's total trade was close to $3 trillion in 2011, making it the 3rd largest trading nation and 2nd largest economy in the world. This translates into enormous opportunities for U.S./California exporters.
California exports to Mainland China increased to $14.2 billion in 2011, making it California’s 3rd largest trading partner. California exports to Hong Kong and Taiwan increased last year as well, to total $14.7 billion. California exports to Taiwan increased to over $6.3 billion. China could prove to be a significantly larger market for California exports in the future. Chinese investment in the U.S. is fundamentally good for the U.S. economy because it creates new jobs, maintains existing ones, provides new sources of capital, develops infrastructure and ultimately serves to strengthen U.S.-China commercial ties. This China Conference will seek to explore current issues in trade and commerce between China and California. The aim of the conference is not only to understand trade developments, but also to encourage a mutual learning process for the community at large. We will also discuss potential actions that could help promote Chinese FDI as a positive source of foreign investment in California.
