Instructor Mr. John Casey Vear has developed and taught SAT preparation courses for more than twenty years at American and International high schools. He has worked for the Educational Testing Service as a Test Center Supervisor for the GMAT and TOEFL programs. Mr. Vear has twenty-five years of experience teaching English, Earth Science, Physical Science, Algebra, and Geometry. He currently teaches Algebra I and Algebra II at Bishop Alemany High School. John has a B.A. from Dartmouth College, an M.A. from Michigan State University, and California Teaching Credentials in both Math and English.

SAT/ACT Preparation Course This course will prepare students for the ACT and the new redesigned SAT that will be administered beginning March 2016. Students will learn the structure of the tests, including the specific question types in the Reading, Math, Writing and Language, and Essay sections of the SAT, and the English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing sections of the ACT. Students will learn strategies for each of the different question types as well as general test-taking approaches for both the SAT and ACT. Students will review and practice the most essential math, reading, and writing skills and concepts through practice questions, practice tests, and essays.
Science Students will learn how to interpret graphs and tables, analyze the results of experiments, and use scientific reasoning to answer questions about:
Data representation Research summaries Conflicting viewpoints
Reading Students will learn:
Types of reading passages and passage-based reading questions for the SAT and the ACT.
Strategies for reading the passages and answering the questions
Strategies for eliminating answer choices
Math Topics include: Number operations, properties Averages, rates, ratios, percents Exponents and roots Graphs, coordinate geometry Basic and advanced algebra Word and logic problems Lines, angles, triangles Quadrilaterals, circles, solids Functions, sequences Trigonometry
English/Writing Students will review selected grammar, usage, punctuation, and sentence structure. Students will learn the types of questions asked in the SAT Writing and Language Test and the ACT English Test and strategies for answering those questions. Students will learn how to: Manage the allotted time for the essay Structure the essay for the SAT and ACT Include elements in their essays that will enhance their essay scores
